The team members were all on high alert, their gazes fixed on the indistinct shadow. It lacked a definite form, appearing to be composed of some kind of dark energy that flickered in and out with the blue glow.
"Who are you?" Lin Xi stared at the shadow, trying to suppress the unease within with a calm tone.
The shadow's voice was deep and hollow, echoing with an eerie resonance. "Who I am is not the question you should be asking. The real question is, why have you come here?"
"Enough with the nonsense!" Zhou Zheng drew Wu Lan and pointed it at the shadow. "We're here to stop you!"
The shadow seemed unfazed, even mocking as it replied, "Stop me? You don't even know who your true enemy is, yet you confidently barge in here?"
As soon as the words left its mouth, the room's light suddenly became blinding. The blue patterns on the walls seemed to come alive, flowing rapidly and converging into the central Shadow Stone.
"Energy Fluctuation is increasing!" Chen Rui's voice crackled through the communication device, filled with urgency. "Leader Lin, the activity of the Shadow Stone has exceeded warning levels. If we don't take action soon, the entire Area could be destroyed!"
Lin Xi gritted her teeth and calmly replied, "Chen Rui, continue monitoring the data fluctuations. The rest of you prepare to suppress the core device!"
"Useless," the shadow sneered. "This device is an extension of my will; you cannot stop its operation."
Lin Xi glared at the shadow and scoffed, "Then let's see you try."
In an instant, a fierce battle erupted.
The shadow suddenly expanded, transforming into dozens of tentacle-like streams of energy that surged toward them with overwhelming pressure. The team members quickly scattered, using nearby cover to evade while launching their counterattacks.
"Zhou Zheng, cover Leader Lin! Find the core point of the device!" Wang Ya shouted while firing, trying to draw more attacks toward herself.
"Understood!" Zhou Zheng quickly followed Lin Xi as they moved at high speed toward the Shadow Stone.
However, a powerful energy barrier surrounded the Shadow Stone; any attempts to approach were repelled. Zhou Zheng tried to attack the barrier with explosive rounds, but all his efforts were silently absorbed without causing even a ripple.
"The energy level of this barrier is too high; we need to find its control source!" Lin Xi quickly assessed the situation. "Chen Rui, any findings?"
"Give me a moment; I'm scanning the energy structure of the barrier!" Chen Rui's voice rose suddenly. "There's an energy node on the east side of the room; it might be supporting the barrier!"
Lin Xi immediately issued orders: "Wang Ya, take a few people and break through to the east! Destroy that node!"
"Got it!" Wang Ya led two teammates into action as they leaped from cover and charged toward the east side under heavy fire from the shadow's tentacles.
Wang Ya and her team's actions drew much of the shadow's attention away, buying Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng more time. However, as time passed, the intensity of the shadow's attacks continued to escalate, increasing pressure on the team.
"Hurry up! We can't hold on much longer!" Wang Ya shouted while firing, her tone laced with urgency.
Chen Rui's voice came through just in time: "I've decrypted part of the data stream! You can try using the High-Frequency Interference Device to weaken the node's Energy Fluctuation!"
"On it!" Wang Ya quickly retrieved the High-Frequency Interference Device and secured it to the ground near the node before activating it. A sharp buzzing sound filled the air as the blue glow of the node rapidly diminished, causing instability in the entire room's barrier.
"It worked!" Zhou Zheng shouted as the barrier weakened.
Without hesitation, Lin Xi charged toward the Shadow Stone, ready to intervene with the core device. Just as the barrier was about to disappear completely, the shadow suddenly contracted, transforming into a slender beam of light that drilled into the Shadow Stone. The entire room fell into a brief silence, and then cracks began to appear on the surface of the Shadow Stone, releasing a deep and ominous aura from within.
It’s triggering an energy backlash! Chen Rui exclaimed, realizing that this could lead to a catastrophic failure of the entire device.
Is there any way to stop it? Lin Xi asked urgently.
There’s only one option: completely destroy the Shadow Stone!
Lin Xi didn’t hesitate for a moment. "Everyone, concentrate fire and aim at the Shadow Stone! Hold nothing back!"
The team quickly adjusted their positions, directing all Wu Lan firepower at the Shadow Stone and launching a fierce attack. However, the shell of the Shadow Stone was sturdier than expected; the continuous bombardment only slightly widened the cracks.
It’s self-repairing! Zhou Zheng shouted nervously. We need to speed up!
Lin Xi gritted her teeth and pulled a red high-power explosive from her waist. This was her last specially made Wu Lan explosive, powerful enough to destroy a small building but extremely risky to use.
"Leader Lin, this is too dangerous!" Zhou Zheng urged anxiously.
There’s no other choice. Lin Xi said calmly. You all evacuate first; I’ll detonate it.
But—
"This is an order!" Lin Xi's tone left no room for doubt.
The team members exchanged reluctant glances with Lin Xi before quickly retreating toward the exit. The light from the Shadow Stone grew even more intense, and an otherworldly color seeped through the cracks, resembling countless tiny whirlpools spinning within. Lin Xi took a deep breath and firmly secured the explosive against the crack in the Shadow Stone before setting a ten-second countdown for detonation.
I hope this gamble pays off. Lin Xi whispered to herself as she turned and sprinted toward the exit.
The ten seconds felt like an eternity; Lin Xi could almost feel the shockwave of the explosion catching up with her. Just as she was about to reach the exit, a powerful shockwave hurled her backward, slamming her heavily onto the ground.
When Lin Xi opened her eyes again, she found that the room had been utterly destroyed, with fragments of the Shadow Stone floating in the water around her.
"Leader Lin, do you hear me?!" Chen Rui's anxious voice crackled through her earpiece.
"I'm still alive," Lin Xi replied with difficulty as she struggled to sit up.
However, just as she prepared to rise, she caught sight of a glowing fragment nearby, where a faint shadow seemed to be writhing within it.
The situation isn’t over yet. Lin Xi murmured, new vigilance igniting in her eyes.
