After the explosion of the Shadow Stone, the entire area fell into an indescribable silence. The blue light faded, leaving only darkness in the room. Lin Xi leaned against the wall, breathing heavily; the aftershocks of the blast caused a dull ache in her left shoulder, but compared to the tension in her heart, this pain was nothing.
She stared at the fragment on the ground that still emitted a faint glow, feeling an undeniable chill. That thing was still alive. Despite being shattered, its core seemed to retain some form of consciousness.
Chen Rui, what’s the situation with the energy fluctuation in the room? Lin Xi pressed her earpiece, trying to suppress her anxiety.
Chen Rui's voice came through, tinged with urgency: The energy fluctuation is still present, but very weak. Leader Lin, you need to bring that fragment back quickly; I need more time to analyze its structure!
It’s still alive. Lin Xi said solemnly.
Alive? Chen Rui's voice shot up an octave. Impossible! The core of the Shadow Stone should have been completely destroyed in the explosion!
But it’s right in front of me. Lin Xi's tone was firm as she looked down at the fragment, shadows writhing within it as if trying to break free.
After a moment, she made a decision and carefully placed the fragment into a protective case.
How are the team members? Lin Xi asked as she stood up and hurried towards the exit.
Wang Ya and the others have already retreated to a safe area, but there are still residual radiation waves at your location; you need to leave quickly! Chen Rui's voice came through again.
Lin Xi didn’t respond; she just quickened her pace.
The corridor was in disarray; the shockwave from the explosion had destroyed most of the equipment, cracks marred the walls, and the air was thick with a burnt smell. Lin Xi rushed forward and finally spotted her waiting team members around the corner.
Leader Lin! Wang Ya was the first to rush over, checking Lin Xi’s condition. Are you okay? The communication cut out earlier; we thought—
I’m fine. Lin Xi waved her hand dismissively. It’s urgent; I need to bring this back to command center.
What is that? Zhou Zheng noticed the protective case in Lin Xi's hand, his eyes filled with curiosity.
Fragments of the Shadow Stone. Lin Xi replied briefly, then glanced at everyone. Let’s go; we need to leave immediately.
On their way back to command center, Lin Xi couldn't shake off the final whispers of shadows echoing in her mind.

These words pierced her heart like a thorn. The power of the Shadow Stone far exceeded her expectations; there seemed to be more complexity behind this mission than she had anticipated.
Once the team returned to base, Chen Rui immediately took over the protective case and placed the fragment into an isolation chamber for analysis.
I’ll need a few hours. Chen Rui said without looking up. The energy emitted by this thing is quite strange, but one thing is certain: it’s not naturally occurring; it has been artificially created.
Artificially created? Lin Xi frowned. Are you saying it was manufactured?
Not sure yet, but its energy fluctuation is completely different from normal minerals; it resembles some kind of experimental product more closely. Chen Rui looked up, excitement glimmering in his eyes. If I can decipher its energy structure, perhaps I can uncover its true origin!
Lin Xi nodded and then turned to her team: "Everyone, take a moment to rest and be ready at all times."
As time passed, the atmosphere in the base gradually became oppressive. Lin Xi sat in the command room, staring at the screen in front of her, which displayed the energy fluctuation graph of the Shadow Stone fragment. The complex lines resembled some kind of indecipherable code.
"Leader Lin!" Chen Rui suddenly burst in, holding a data report. "We have progress!"
"Speak," Lin Xi immediately stood up.
"The energy frequency of this fragment is related to the Heavenly Eye Project we tracked earlier!" Chen Rui's voice was tinged with barely concealed excitement. "I even suspect that this energy might be used to control some larger device!"
Lin Xi's expression darkened. "Are you saying this is just the beginning?"
"Exactly." Chen Rui nodded. "And based on the direction of the energy flow, the true core of this device might be located in the Abyss Base we suspected earlier."
"Abyss Base?" Wang Ya frowned. "Isn't that place supposed to have been abandoned for decades?"
"Abandoned is just a surface appearance," Chen Rui shook his head. "If the core energy of the Shadow Stone is related to that place, it means it has never stopped operating."
The command room fell silent, with only the hum of instruments echoing.
Lin Xi took a deep breath and said calmly, "Prepare for the next move immediately. We must go to Abyss Base and uncover all the truths."
"Leader Lin!" Wang Ya hesitated. "The danger level of this operation might exceed our expectations."
"We have no choice," Lin Xi's gaze was resolute. "If we don't go, what awaits us could be an even greater disaster."
A few hours later, the team was once again ready for departure. The transport aircraft quietly ascended into the night sky, heading towards the forgotten Abyss Base deep in the ocean.
Lin Xi sat inside the cabin, her eyes fixed on the pitch-black night sky outside the window.
"Abyss Base," she whispered, a sense of foreboding creeping into her heart.
