The night sky was as dark as ink, and the transport aircraft flew low over the black sea, the atmosphere inside the cabin heavy with silence. Lin Xi sat in the front row, her gaze fixed on the map and data report in her hands. The abandoned facility known as Abyss Base was the destination of their mission.
"Leader Lin," Wang Ya's voice broke through her concentration as they approached the designated drop zone. "Are we really going to infiltrate from here?"
"We have no choice." Lin Xi pointed to a marked location on the map. "Entering from above will definitely trigger the base's defense systems. We can only approach from beneath."
Wang Ya nodded, saying nothing more. She understood that once Lin Xi made a decision, it was rarely changed.
"All units, prepare to switch to diving mode!" Lin Xi opened the communication channel and issued commands to all team members. "In fifteen minutes, we will enter the water!"
The transport aircraft hovered at the drop point, and the cabin door opened. One by one, the team members jumped into the icy waters below. Lin Xi was the last to leave the aircraft, and as the water rushed into her eardrums, she felt a bone-chilling cold.
"Stay in formation," Lin Xi adjusted her communicator inside her mask. "Target: deep-sea coordinates."
The ocean at night was chillingly silent, an eerie stillness enveloping them. Only the beams of their diving lights flickered against the dark seabed.
"Leader Lin, are you sure there are signs of human activity here?" Zhou Zheng's voice crackled through the communication channel, his tone laced with skepticism. "This place feels like a graveyard; there aren't even any fish."
"The quieter it is, the more something feels off," Lin Xi replied quietly, her eyes fixed on the abyss that loomed ahead.
The team continued their descent, and underwater instruments began to detect abnormal Energy Fluctuations; the data on their screens became increasingly complex.
"Captain! The detector shows a metallic structure ahead; it seems to be part of the base's outer layer!" Chen Rui's excited voice came through, barely containing his enthusiasm. "We found it!"
Lin Xi looked up and indeed saw a massive metallic structure gradually coming into view under their diving lights. The base resembled a slumbering giant, lying quietly on the seabed, surrounded by rusted pipes and layers of sediment.
"Leader Lin, this place doesn't look abandoned," Wang Ya frowned. "These metal structures are too well-preserved; some even appear to be moving slowly."
"I know," Lin Xi replied calmly. "Be careful; any movement could trigger its defense mechanisms."
The process of entering the base was not smooth. The entrance to its outer layer was sealed by a heavy metal door, and it took nearly half an hour for the team to squeeze through an old drainage pipe to gain access inside.
Inside the pipe was pitch black, and a decaying odor filled the air. The sound of dripping water echoed in the narrow space, making it feel even more oppressive.
"Chen Rui, what are the internal environment scan results?" Lin Xi asked.
"The internal structure is complex, but Energy Fluctuations are very clear; the core should be at the center of the base's Area," Chen Rui replied while adjusting his equipment. "But there's something strange."
"What’s strange?"
"The Energy Fluctuations here aren’t one-directional; they’re spreading out like breathing," Chen Rui’s words left everyone stunned.
"Breathing?" Lin Xi frowned. "Are you saying this base is alive?"
"It’s just a metaphor," Chen Rui quickly clarified, though his voice carried an air of uncertainty. "But it does feel odd—like some large device is operating rhythmically."
Lin Xi did not ask further but waved her hand: Whatever it is, let's head to the Core Area first. Everyone, stay alert!
After passing through several narrow corridors, the team finally arrived at a massive control room. In the center of the room stood a device emitting a faint blue light, resembling a heart that pulsed slowly.
This is the core. Chen Rui's voice trembled slightly, all the Shadow Stone and Energy Fluctuation originate from here!
Lin Xi stepped forward to closely examine the device. Its surface was covered with intricate symbols and cracks, as if it had undergone countless repairs, yet each crack emitted an eerie glow.
This thing is more than just a machine. Wang Ya whispered; it resembles some sort of altar.
Lin Xi did not respond but reached out to touch the surface of the device. The moment her finger made contact with the blue light, a powerful shockwave instantly knocked her back several steps.
Leader Lin! The team members rushed over.
Lin Xi waved her hand, signaling everyone to stay back; this thing has a defense mechanism and should not be touched lightly.
Just as she intended to observe further, she noticed the blue light suddenly brightening, as if sensing something, and began to pulse violently.
Not good! Chen Rui exclaimed; it's losing control of its energy!
Everyone evacuate! Lin Xi immediately commanded, but it was too late; the blue light erupted in an instant, and a massive wave of energy swept through the entire control room.
When the light faded, Lin Xi found herself in a completely unfamiliar space. Surrounding her was an expanse of nothingness, dotted only by countless stars illuminating the darkness.
Where is this? she whispered.
At that moment, a deep and unfamiliar voice echoed in her ear: Welcome to Truth's End, mortal.
Lin Xi turned sharply but found that the blue light had coalesced into a vague human figure, seemingly merging with the starlight and exuding an overwhelming pressure.
Who are you? Lin Xi asked coldly, suppressing her shock.
I am the Abyss. The voice was deep and slow; I am also the end you seek.
Lin Xi furrowed her brow: What do you want?
It is not what I want. The figure spoke slowly; rather, your world is on the brink of destruction, and yet you remain oblivious to it.
