Lin Xi stood in the void, facing the figure coalescing from blue light, her mind swirling with countless questions. The name "Abyss" had only appeared as a vague record in many classified documents, yet now this entity manifested before her in a way that defied comprehension.
"What exactly are you?" Lin Xi fixed her gaze on the indistinct figure, her tone laced with scrutiny.
"I am the Remnant, a witness of the past and a creator of the future." The voice of the Abyss resonated through the emptiness. "Your realm is on the brink of an irreversible collapse."
Lin Xi took a deep breath, forcing herself to remain calm. "If you know everything, then tell me—what is this disaster?"
"The Shadow Stone is merely a prelude," the Abyss replied slowly. "It is not the source of energy; it is the cornerstone that maintains the balance of your realm. Each Shadow Stone connects to the very foundation of this domain. Your actions are accelerating its destruction."
"We?" Lin Xi paused, taken aback. "Are you saying that the Shadow Stone is man-made? Its instability is due to our actions?"
"Indeed." The Abyss's form quivered slightly. "The energy of the Shadow Stone is beyond your control. You believe you are benefiting from it; in reality, you are triggering an energy imbalance capable of annihilation."
Lin Xi instinctively took a step back, a chill rising from her core. "This cannot be true! The development of the Shadow Stone is strictly regulated—how could it lead to such consequences?"
"Foolish arrogance," the Abyss sneered. "You think you can master it, yet you do not even understand its origin. The Shadow Stone did not come into being by itself; it is a legacy left by the Creator."
"Creator?" The term sent a jolt through Lin Xi. It was the first time she had encountered this unfamiliar concept, yet she sensed it might hold the key to unraveling all mysteries.
"The Creator is the entity that fashioned all of this," the Abyss continued, its voice deepening. "They designed this realm, endowed the Shadow Stone with energy, and left behind the Abyss as its guardian. They have long since vanished, leaving you ignorant inheritors to attempt to usurp their legacy."
"If you know all this, why not stop us?" Lin Xi asked coldly.
"I have tried my best." A hint of weariness crept into the Abyss's tone. "Do you think that decades of disasters and anomalous energy events were mere coincidences? That was my attempt to balance the energy depletion of the Shadow Stone. Yet you chose to continue mining and exploiting it until everything spiraled beyond my control."
Lin Xi's mind was overwhelmed by a barrage of information, nearly paralyzing her thoughts. She struggled to make sense of it all; reality was far more complex than she had imagined.
"So what can we do now?" Lin Xi gritted her teeth and asked. "If what you say about collapse is imminent, do we still have a chance to salvage this?"
The Abyss fell silent for a moment before responding: "Perhaps there is one way. It requires you to relinquish all dependence on the Shadow Stone and find the key to access the Creator's relics."
"Creator's relics?" Lin Xi keenly seized upon this crucial point. "Are you saying those lost relics still exist?"
"Yes, they do not belong to your realm; they lie beneath the Abyss." The Abyss slowly raised its hand, pointing toward a starry scene emerging in the void. "These points are entrances to the relics; only a true key can activate them."
Lin Xi scrutinized that image and realized one point's location perfectly matched their current position at Abyss Base.
"This is an entrance?" Lin Xi whispered.
"Correct." The Abyss nodded. "However, opening it will not be easy; the key is hidden deep within your base's core. You must confront the guardians left behind by the Shadow Stone—they are designed as the final barrier to prevent unworthy beings from entering the relics."
Lin Xi frowned involuntarily. "Guardians?"
"Those uncontrollable energy beings," replied the Abyss coldly. "They are products of the energy imbalance caused by the Shadow Stone and represent challenges you must overcome. If you cannot pass their test, then destruction will be an inevitable outcome."
The void gradually dissipated, and Lin Xi suddenly opened her eyes, finding herself back in the control room. Her teammates were anxiously watching her.
"Leader Lin! What just happened?" Wang Ya rushed over first, concern evident in her eyes.
"I'm fine," Lin Xi waved her hand and slowly stood up. "We need to take action."
"What happened?" Chen Rui asked, puzzled. "After that burst of energy, you looked like you lost consciousness."
Lin Xi paused for a moment and briefly shared the information she had just learned from the abyss with everyone.
The room fell into a heavy silence, each person's face turning unusually grave.
"So, our next mission is to find this so-called key?" Zhou Zheng spoke up first, his tone tinged with uncertainty. "But what if it's just a trap?"
"Whether it's a trap or an opportunity, we have no way out," Lin Xi said firmly. "From now on, our mission is not just to survive; it's to find a way to save this realm."
Wang Ya nodded. "No matter what, we will follow you."
Lin Xi turned to Chen Rui. "Immediately scan the deeper areas of the base for any potential energy anomalies. That so-called key is likely hidden there."
Chen Rui quickly activated the equipment, and soon a complex energy fluctuation map appeared on the screen.
"Here," Chen Rui pointed at a bright spot on the screen. "In the deepest part of the base, there's a strong source of energy fluctuation. I suspect that's where we need to go."
Lin Xi nodded. "What are we waiting for? Prepare your gear; we're leaving right away."
The team re-equipped themselves and silently advanced through the dark corridors of the base. Each step carried unknown dangers and immense pressure. They knew that ahead lay perhaps the last hope for this realm.
