The convoy stopped immediately and everyone got out to check. Not far away on the road, an overturned transport truck lay quietly there. The car body was riddled with bullet holes and burn marks, obviously having been the victim of a violent attack. It's our team. After an inspection, Zhou Zheng said that this car was the equipment of the third Squad that entered the Forbidden Zone three months ago.
Their team outnumbered ours and had superior equipment, yet they still failed to emerge. Wang Ya leaned against the vehicle, a hint of complex emotion in her voice. "Leader Lin, should we continue moving forward?"
Lin Xi did not respond but walked straight to the transport vehicle's compartment. She carefully opened the door and discovered that the cargo inside had been destroyed, with only a few charred metal scraps lying in the corner.
Chen Rui approached and picked up a piece of metal, examining it closely. "This is a fragment of Shadow Stone."
Lin Xi's expression grew colder. "It seems the Shadow Stone Control Center can not only learn but also actively defend itself. It’s waiting for us here."
The convoy resumed its journey, and the team members felt increasingly tense. As they delved deeper into the Forbidden Zone, the surrounding environment became increasingly bizarre. The clouds in the sky appeared twisted by some unseen force, forming an abnormal vortex, while a low humming sound faintly resonated in the air.
"This place doesn’t seem natural," Chen Rui remarked as he recorded data. "It feels more like some kind of experimental site."
"An experimental site?" Lin Xi frowned. "What exactly has Shadow Stone been doing here?"
"I don’t know, but I’m certain we are getting closer to the truth," Chen Rui replied in a low voice. "These environmental changes are likely due to energy leakage from the Shadowstone Core."
"If that’s the case, then we’ve already entered its territory." Zhou Zheng tightened his grip on his weapon. "The next step won’t be easy."
After traveling a distance, a massive crack suddenly blocked their path. Lin Xi signaled for everyone to stop, and they all disembarked to proceed on foot.
On the other side of the crack lay a cluster of abandoned buildings, seemingly remnants of some forsaken research facility.
"That’s our target," Lin Xi pointed at the structures. "Everyone be cautious and prepare for battle."
The team members quickly spread out, cautiously advancing along the crack. However, just as they were about to approach the buildings, a piercing shriek suddenly echoed from within the fissure.
"What was that sound?" Wang Ya spun around abruptly, raising her weapon.
In the next moment, a shadow leaped out from the crack, charging toward the team. Lin Xi immediately pulled the trigger; gunfire illuminated the shadow's outline—a creature unlike any they had seen before, its body covered in metallic scales and its eyes glowing with a cold red light.
"A product of Shadow Stone!" Chen Rui shouted. "It's protecting its core!"
"Take it down!" Lin Xi commanded sharply, and the team opened fire without hesitation.
Gunshots and explosions reverberated through the ruins of the Forbidden Zone as the creature charged fearlessly toward them.
Lin Xi gritted her teeth. "Keep moving forward! No matter what it takes, we must break through its defenses!"
