The smoke of battle still lingered in the air, mingling with the acrid scent of burning metal. The corpse of the monster lay sprawled at the edge of the fissure, its body twisted as if it had endured a fierce struggle. 0

"Assess the injuries!" Lin Xi commanded, loading bullets while scanning the surroundings. 0

"Two minor injuries, no life-threatening situations," Chen Rui reported after quickly checking on the team. His expression was grave; the creature's defenses were too strong. If another one showed up, we would struggle to hold our ground. 0

Lin Xi remained silent, his gaze fixed on the abandoned buildings across the fissure. "This is just the outer defense; we haven't truly entered the core yet." 0

"Even the strongest defenses have weaknesses," Zhou Zheng said, wiping his sniper rifle with a steady tone. "As long as we maintain our formation, we won't be easily breached." 0

"Maintaining formation assumes a limited number of enemies," Wang Ya replied, disassembling his weapon with fluid movements. "What if there are so many controlled by Shadow Stone that they swarm us like ants?" 0

"Then we'll see whose will is stronger," Lin Xi said coldly, urging them to move forward. 0

After crossing the fissure, the team entered the outskirts of the building complex. The structures appeared to have been abandoned for a long time; cracks marred the walls, and shattered instruments and rusted metal plates littered the ground. 0

These buildings were clearly human-made. Chen Rui swept his flashlight over the markings on the walls. It seemed this place had once been a research facility. 0

Lin Xi nodded. "This could be the source we've been searching for. The abnormal activities of Shadow Stone are likely related to experiments conducted here." 0

"The question is, what went wrong in those experiments that turned this place into what is now known as the Forbidden Zone?" Wang Ya asked softly, a hint of apprehension in her voice. 0

"The answer lies ahead." Lin Xi concluded, leading them toward a relatively intact building. 0

The exterior of this structure bore an eye-catching emblem, beneath which was a weathered plaque. The inscription was faded but still vaguely legible: Shadow Stone Energy Laboratory. 0

"We've found a key point," Chen Rui whispered, quickly recording this information on his portable terminal. 0

"Everyone stay alert; there may still be guards." Lin Xi tightened his grip on his weapon and quietly ordered his team to spread out. 0

Upon entering the building, they quickly realized that its facilities were in better condition than expected. The lights in the corridor, though dim, provided some illumination, and the pipes along the walls showed no signs of complete corrosion. 0

"This place doesn't seem entirely abandoned," Zhou Zheng observed, his tone laced with curiosity. "Is someone maintaining these systems?" 0

"Or perhaps Shadow Stone's power is interfering with these devices," Chen Rui speculated. "If Shadow Stone's energy is strong enough, it might reactivate some of these facilities." 0

Reaching a closed metal door, Lin Xi signaled for them to stop. The door was equipped with a complex Electronic Lock, and its display screen was still lit. 0

"Can you crack it?" Lin Xi asked Chen Rui. 0

Chen Rui nodded and crouched down to begin his work. His fingers danced over the keyboard, and after a few moments, the lock emitted a beep and turned green on the screen. 0

"Done," Chen Rui stood up but added cautiously, "I can't guarantee what lies beyond this door." 0

"Step back and prepare for any surprises," Lin Xi commanded everyone. 0

With a dull mechanical sound, the metal door slowly creaked open. A chilling draft swept in from behind the door, carrying with it the scent of decay and dampness. 0

The space beyond the door was beyond anyone's expectations. 0
