The vast underground hall was filled with intricate machinery adorning the walls, while at its center stood a structure made of Black Crystal. Towering several meters high, the surface of the Crystal shimmered with a faint glow, as if it were alive.
"Shadowstone Core," Chen Rui's voice trembled with disbelief. "We found it."
"This is the center of the Forbidden Zone?" Wang Ya stepped forward, trying to see more clearly. "Why does it look like it's alive?"
The surface is moving. Zhou Zheng whispered, and I suspected that this entity not only had consciousness but might also be observing us.
"Keep your distance!" Lin Xi immediately warned the team against approaching. "This thing is likely more dangerous than we imagine."
At that moment, the Crystal suddenly emitted a blinding light, engulfing the entire hall in a searing whiteness.
"Cover!" Lin Xi quickly raised her hand to shield her eyes, instinctively pulling the trigger.
However, the bullet did not hit its target. When the light faded, everyone realized that the form of the Crystal had changed.
It transformed from a static structure into a flowing shape, resembling liquid metal that surged continuously while emitting a deep humming sound.
"It’s responding to our presence," Chen Rui's voice quivered. "This thing not only has consciousness but can interact with the outside world."
"Everyone retreat!" Lin Xi commanded sharply. "This could be some kind of pre-attack signal!"
But it was already too late. The Crystal suddenly unleashed a shockwave that enveloped the entire hall in an instant.
The force of the shockwave scattered the team; Lin Xi was knocked to the ground, and the ringing in her ears made it difficult for her to think.
When she regained her senses, she found that the environment of the hall had completely changed.
The walls around her became indistinct, as if twisted by some strange power; the once-static machinery now moved like living creatures. The Crystal still stood in the center, its glow now blindingly bright, rendering it almost impossible to look at.
"Leader Lin! Can you hear me?" Chen Rui's voice crackled through her earpiece, filled with urgency.
"I can't," Lin Xi pressed her earpiece. "What about everyone else?"
"Still confirming," Chen Rui replied. "The environment here is undergoing drastic changes; we need to leave as soon as possible!"
Lin Xi took a deep breath, striving to calm herself. She scanned her surroundings for an exit but noticed cracks beginning to form in the ground beneath her feet, an invisible force attempting to pull her toward the Crystal.
"This thing wants to draw us in!" Wang Ya's voice came from nearby. "Leader Lin, we need to retreat immediately!"
"Retreat!" Lin Xi decisively ordered as she quickly ran toward the entrance.
Yet with every step she took, she felt that pulling force intensifying; behind her, the Crystal's humming grew increasingly urgent.
"This thing won’t let us leave easily!" Zhou Zheng shouted as he ran and fired his weapon, trying to disrupt the Crystal's pull with bullets, but to little effect.
"Hold on!" Lin Xi shouted loudly. "No matter what, we have to make it out of here alive!"
