Having escaped the underground labyrinth, the team thought they had entered a brief moment of calm. However, as Lin Xi stood on the desolate land, her heart remained restless. The crystal ball in her hand felt even hotter than before, emitting a faint blue glow, as if something was subtly summoning them.
"Leader Lin, is this really the surface? It looks more like another Forbidden Zone," Chen Rui frowned, surveying their surroundings.
They were surrounded by a silent desert, the ground cracked like a tortoise shell, and the air was thick with a suffocating sense of urgency. In the distance, a floating dark red light appeared ominously, hinting at impending danger.
"This doesn't resemble the surface we know," Lin Xi murmured, her gaze fixed on the source of the red light. "But it must be where the crystal ball wants us to go."
"Are we just going to rush over there?" Wang Ya asked hesitantly, eyeing the glow. "What if it's another trap?"
"We have no way back," Lin Xi replied firmly, raising her head with determination. "We can only move forward."
The team quickly gathered their gear and made their way toward the light.
As they drew closer, the environment began to change dramatically. White smoke billowed from cracks in the ground, and the air grew drier, making it increasingly difficult to breathe.
"There's a strange smell," Zhou Zheng whispered. "It’s like some kind of chemical."
"Don't inhale too much; cover your mouth and nose with cloth," Lin Xi instructed swiftly. "There may be unknown creatures ahead."
However, they had barely walked for a minute when they stumbled upon some unusual signs. Beside a massive rock lay several decaying corpses. These bodies were dressed in tattered uniforms bearing a familiar emblem—their own Special Operations Bureau.
"Who are these people?" Chen Rui gasped in shock, his voice tinged with unease.
"They might be from a previous exploration team," Lin Xi said coldly. "Clearly, they did not complete their mission."
She crouched down to examine the bodies closely and discovered that they hadn’t died from ordinary gunshot wounds; instead, they had been pierced by some sharp object. The wounds were neat and deep, clearly not inflicted by any ordinary creature.
"Look here," Wang Ya pointed at the ground beside one of the corpses. There was a trail of chaotic bloodstains that seemed to spell out a few words in their final moments: "Quality?"
"What does that mean?" Chen Rui read aloud, puzzled.
"This isn't just random," Lin Xi stood up, her gaze intense. "These people clearly fell victim to some unknown force. We must prepare for the worst."
As they continued down their path, the team became increasingly cautious. Little did they know that danger had already quietly descended upon them.
Behind them, a pair of dark red eyes lurked behind the rocks, coldly observing their every move.
"Leader Lin, I have an odd feeling," Chen Rui suddenly whispered, scanning their surroundings warily as if something was watching them.
"It’s not an illusion." Lin Xi spun around abruptly, raising her weapon. "Everyone, stay alert!"
In the next moment, a shadow lunged out from behind the rocks with such speed that it was almost impossible to react.
"Open fire!" Lin Xi commanded as the team instantly shifted into combat mode. Bullets rained down on the shadow. However, it moved with incredible agility, weaving through their concentrated fire unharmed and closing in on them rapidly.
"What is this thing!" Wang Ya exclaimed.
They finally saw the true form of the shadow, which was an insect-like Alien Creature, its body covered in a pitch-black shell. Its forelimbs were sharp like scythes, and corrosive liquid dripped from its maw, emitting a foul stench.
"Don't let its liquid touch you!" Lin Xi shouted, quickly aiming for its head and firing.
The Alien Creature let out a piercing shriek and lunged at Lin Xi. However, just as it was about to close the distance, Chen Rui seized the opportunity to throw a grenade, hitting the target with precision.
Boom!
In the instant of the explosion, half of the Alien Creature was blown away, but it did not die completely; it continued to struggle, trying to retaliate.
"Keep attacking! Focus your fire!" Lin Xi commanded calmly. The team members unleashed a barrage of bullets at its head until it finally collapsed to the ground, powerless.
"Is it dead?" Zhou Zheng panted.
Lin Xi stepped forward and gently prodded its corpse with the gun barrel. After confirming it showed no response, he said, "For now, it's dead."
"Just for now?" Wang Ya frowned. "Are you saying there are more of these things?"
If there is truly some secret hidden here, this creature cannot be the only one. Lin Xi's gaze turned icy. "We must find the source quickly; otherwise, we will be facing certain death."
In the distance, a dark red glow became increasingly dazzling, almost blinding.
"We're here," Lin Xi whispered, tightly gripping the crystal ball in his hand.
"Is this the end point?" Chen Rui asked, his voice tinged with apprehension.
"No, this is just the beginning," Lin Xi replied softly as he stepped forward toward the center of the light.
Before them, an ancient Old altar gradually emerged, surrounded by countless dilapidated statues and inscriptions that seemed to tell of the countless secrets hidden within this land. As they approached the altar, the crystal ball emitted an unprecedented radiant glow.
To be continued.
