Of course, my wife has spoken, demanding tenfold repayment. How could I not teach him a lesson?
I chuckled, and Linna smiled as well, rolling her eyes at me before continuing to ask, "So how do you see him? Is he suffering?"
"Of course he's suffering! Tenfold repayment means he's on the brink of death," I replied with a laugh. However, once Liu Fei is in Xiong Li's hands, I can't be sure what will happen next. Linna laughed upon hearing this, a hint of pride mixed with sweetness in her expression as she nodded and said, "Good! He deserves it! As a reward for you, you can order takeout!"
After Linna finished speaking, she turned back to watch TV. I chuckled to myself—was that really a reward for me? It felt more like she wanted to be lazy.
But I wouldn't argue with her; ordering takeout sounded great.
About half an hour later, the delivery arrived. As we began to eat, Linna asked me, "Now that you've become the general manager, what are your plans for the next step?"
"None," I replied bluntly. Linna was quite demanding; I had just become the general manager and she was already asking about my next move? Couldn't I catch my breath?
But then I remembered that Linna had dreamt about her father last night. If there was no rest, then so be it. The next step? Xiong Li's position?
The next step would indeed be Xiong Li's position. In fact, the role of nightclub general manager doesn't fall under Tian Ye Group's criminal sphere; only Xiong Li's position qualifies as part of their underworld operations. Achieving that would mean I've completed the first step and entered their ranks.
Linna explained further, and I nodded in understanding. I was aware of the situation: Tian Ye Group was half black and half white. When Lin Tianfeng was in charge, they were transitioning from black to white. The underworld influence had been steadily reduced but still had a vast framework. Xiong Li's position could be considered one of the lower-level bosses.
If you want to sit in Xiong Li's chair, it's not going to be easy. You can't even speak to his boss directly, nor do you have anything that could impress him. But I remember that Xiong Li seems to have a rival; you might be able to use this rival to your advantage.
Linna continued explaining. Growing up in Tian Ye Group gave her an in-depth understanding of it. Raising an eyebrow, I asked, "Who is it? Tell me more."
Linna informed me that Xiong Li's rival was named Cao Minghui. Like Xiong Li, he also held a position within the organization. In the vast Kyoto area divided into five districts—northeast, southeast, southwest, northwest, and central—each district had its own boss with four subordinates under them, represented by the four mythical creatures: Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise.
Both Xiong Li and Cao Minghui belonged to the Southern District; Xiong Li was from the South District White Tiger Hall while Cao Minghui was from the Southern District Vermilion Bird Hall. Their territories were very close together, creating competition between them. Since they were both part of Tian Ye Group, neither could openly attack the other; thus they competed through business means! Their relationship was quite tense.
Cao Minghui would likely want Xiong Li out of power even more than you do. So you could secretly ally with Cao Minghui and help him push Xiong Li off his pedestal. Then you could leverage Cao Minghui's power to elevate yourself—that's your only way to replace Xiong Li.
Linna chattered away excitedly as she explained this to me. I couldn't help but smirk; while I understood her reasoning, it seemed quite challenging.
Was it really that simple? Here I was aligning myself with Xiong Li while secretly cozying up to Cao Minghui? What if Xiong Li discovered my connection with Cao Minghui? What would happen then? Would he let me off easy? Moreover, even if I succeeded in ousting Xiong Li, did Cao Minghui have the ability to elevate me to his level? Even if he did—why would he want to promote me? Didn't he have his own loyal subordinates?
I fired off a series of questions but was left speechless when Linna didn't answer any of them!
"It all comes down to your capabilities," she said confidently. "I believe in you; you're amazing!"
"But—"
This tactic feels familiar! It seems like she has used it before!
I still wanted to say something.
Kiss! Oil! You’re the best! There’s really no better way, and if I had a solution, I would tell you.
Linna planted a kiss on my cheek, smiling sweetly. I was momentarily taken aback—has the game changed? It was wet and soft; this feeling was quite nice.
Alright, I’ll do my best. Let’s figure out another way.
I sighed helplessly. It’s tough for a hero to get past the beauty’s barrier. Fine, let me be a hero!
As night fell and dinner was finished, Linna went to wash the dishes. Although she used to be a wealthy heiress, she handled this task quite well. She took care of the household chores, and even though she wasn’t great at most of them, I could see she was trying her best.
Except for one thing: she never washed my socks. In that regard, she didn’t put in any effort. But she didn’t make me wash them either; she simply threw them away and bought me new ones. This showed a bit of her stubbornness but also her cuteness.
She worked hard at what she could do, while I didn’t idle away my time. After dinner, I kept pondering what to do next.
Currently, I still lacked sufficient information about Cao Minghui. When I asked Linna, she was clueless as well. According to her, Cao Minghui was still a bit beneath her level; she didn’t know much about him.
But if I wanted to make a move regarding Cao Minghui, I needed to understand him better. At that moment, I thought of my former little brothers; perhaps they were the only ones who could help me now.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Liu Sen’s number.
“Hello, Dong Ge?”
Liu Sen’s deep voice echoed through the line, reminding me of past times.
Liu Sen came from a reconnaissance background! Not only was he skilled in combat, but his tracking abilities were top-notch. When I was undercover in the Northeast, Liu Sen had returned home after his service. His sister had been bullied by local thugs; he single-handedly took on over ten of them without backing down but ended up offending my arch-nemesis—a leader of an underworld gang.
Realizing he couldn’t take on my enemy alone, Liu Sen sought me out for protection. Thanks to my shelter, he and his family remained safe. Since then, Liu Sen had been incredibly grateful to me; he would do anything I asked.
“Yeah, it’s me. I heard you’ve started working as a private detective? How’s it going?”
I asked Liu Sen with a smile. He chuckled helplessly and replied, “What else can I do? Every day is just catching cheating spouses—not nearly as exciting as the days with you, Dong Ge! Are you thinking of making a comeback? I've been waiting for you!”
I smiled wryly at his words. Both Liu Sen and I were the type who wouldn’t call each other unless there was something important to discuss; as soon as I called him, he knew something was up.
“Speaking of comebacks… well, it’s sort of a comeback. I have something going on right now and need your help. I'm in Kyoto; can you come over?”
I asked Liu Sen. Honestly, rather than calling him my little brother, it felt more accurate to call him my brother. I remembered once when higher-ups suspected my identity and wanted me dead; it was Liu Sen who single-handedly infiltrated the factory where I was held captive with a bag of fake explosives and rescued me. That gave me another chance to prove my identity; otherwise, I would have been dead long ago.
“Dong Ge, just say the word! I'll be there whenever you need me!”
Liu Sen remained as cold as ever, his tone devoid of any emotion, yet deep down, he was undoubtedly a person who valued loyalty and friendship. I provided him with the specific address, and he informed me that he would arrive tomorrow! After hanging up the phone, I couldn't help but smile. Although I had been avoiding my past, the thought of seeing a long-lost brother filled my heart with joy.
The next day, over at Wan Fei's Winery, preparations were still underway, and they had yet to produce any wine. Xu Jiao was busy delivering wine to Tianchi. After finishing her delivery and settling accounts with Wang Meng, she hurried to my office, her intentions clear without needing to be spoken.
"Oh my, Xiang Zong! I never expected you to be so impressive. You've only been at Tianchi for a few days, and you've already become the general manager! How wonderful! Let me celebrate with you over a drink!" Xu Jiao said cheerfully as she walked into my office holding a bottle of red wine, conveniently avoiding the topic of accounts. Everyone knew what kind of woman Xu Jiao was; it was no secret that women like her thrived on power and influence.
There was no doubt that I had become a target for her ambitions. However, I truly had little interest in her. Even though I played my role as an undercover agent daily, I found myself weary of people who were overly insincere or formal. Interacting with such individuals often left me feeling drained.
"Thank you, but I'm not really fond of drinking," I replied with a polite smile. Xu Jiao paused in surprise before responding, "What's wrong, Xiang Zong? Didn't you say you liked seeing people drunk the other day? Is it that my useless husband has affected your mood? Come on, let's just enjoy ourselves!"
With a flirtatious sway, Xu Jiao approached me with the red wine in hand, and I couldn't help but chuckle at her antics. Yet deep down, I thought to myself that I'd only feel happy once she walked out that door. What was I to do about that?
I smiled and said, "Xu Jiao, I'd only be happy if you left through that door." She froze for a moment at my words. I knew they were blunt and might embarrass her, but in certain situations, being straightforward was necessary; otherwise, she'd cling on until forced to hear it directly. This was something I'd learned during my time as an undercover leader.
"Xiang Zong, you can't be joking with me?" she asked incredulously. Even so, Xu Jiao didn't turn to leave immediately; instead, she looked at me in disbelief and repeated her question. Perhaps it was true; my tone did resemble that of someone joking around.
