On the way, I thought about the potential situation that could unfold today. If Xiong Li dragged me into this mess, how should I retaliate? There was also a dangerous possibility involving Zhang Mei. The ice pack was found in Zhang Mei's house, and if she mentioned that I had entered her room that day, my suspicions would be magnified infinitely.
However, I estimated that Zhang Mei wouldn't speak up. If she revealed that she saw me enter her room, she would also be implicated. Why didn't she tell Xiong Li about it that day? Once she spoke out, even if it saved Xiong Li, he wouldn’t let her off the hook. I didn't think she had the resolve to sacrifice herself for him.
All I needed to do was distance myself from Cao Hui. My background was clean; as long as I severed ties with him, I could maintain my innocence. I just needed to stick to this point: I couldn't possibly have obtained that much ice.
I arrived at Xiong Li's place. He greeted me cheerfully while wearing a loose bathrobe. I responded and glanced around but didn’t see Zhang Mei or any other women; today, Zhang Mei seemed to be absent.
“Wait a moment, let me get ready,” Xiong Li said before heading into the bathroom. I smiled and replied affirmatively as I settled onto the sofa in the living room, waiting for him to finish preparing.
After more than ten minutes, Xiong Li finally emerged from the bathroom and went to change in his bedroom. Just as we were about to head out, the doorbell rang.
“Hey, who the hell is that? Xiang Dong, can you open the door for me?” Xiong Li called from his bedroom. I answered with a “Got it” and walked to the door, pressing the button to unlock it. Who could it be? I speculated it might be Cao Hui and Liu Haoran!
Why did I think so? Liu Haoran was definitely going to deal with some inconvenient matters today. If Cao Hui had informed Liu Haoran about Xiong Li hiding ice beforehand, then Liu Haoran might have come over with his underlings to confront Xiong Li!
Sure enough. As I listened to the sound of footsteps coming up the stairs, I realized there were quite a few people arriving; it had to be Liu Haoran bringing his crew!
Unexplainably, I began to feel a bit nervous. Honestly, even as an undercover agent, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of guilt. The only thing I could do was try my best to conceal my inner fear.
“Xiang Dong? Where’s Xiong Li?”
The first person to enter was Cao Hui, followed by several burly men. Among them was a man in a suit with a small beard and graying temples—he looked to be in his forties and stood out among this group; it was clear he was their leader, Liu Haoran!
But he wasn’t the most notable one there; someone else among them looked even worse—beaten up so badly he resembled a pig’s head! As I focused my gaze, I realized it was Lu Qiang!
“Cao Tangzhu? Xiong Hall Master is changing clothes inside,” I said with an expression of surprise. Just then, Xiong Li walked out of his bedroom while shouting; he must have heard Cao Hui’s voice.
“Who are you? Did I invite you over?” Xiong Li emerged from his bedroom looking quite imposing. He had changed into a suit and looked much more presentable; however, his shiny bald head revealed what kind of tribulations this man had endured over the years.
"Xiong Li! Have you lost your mind? How dare you speak to the boss like that!"
Cao Hui's sharp reprimand cut through the air. Xiong Li froze, realizing only then that Liu Haoran was standing behind Cao Hui.
"Boss! I-I didn't mean it that way! I wasn't talking about you, I didn't mean you! What are you doing here?"
The moment Xiong Li spotted Liu Haoran, his bravado evaporated, replaced by a cowardly demeanor. The fierce attitude he had just displayed turned into something pitiful, as if he were shrinking back into himself.
At this point, Xiong Li must have also noticed Lu Qiang, who was nursing a bruised face. It was clear to him that the situation was not good, though he couldn't quite grasp the reason behind it.
"Search."
Liu Haoran ignored Xiong Li's protests and simply uttered the word "search." Coolly, his underlings began to ransack Xiong Li's place.
"Boss, what’s going on? What did I do wrong?"
Xiong Li's face was a picture of confusion. Liu Haoran sighed and shook his head in exasperation. "Xiong Li, we have a decent relationship, but you can't treat my words like mere suggestions. I warned you last time about selling ice without permission. I told you there would be no next time. Yet here you are, still daring to defy me?"
As he spoke, Liu Haoran's gaze bore down on Xiong Li with an intimidating intensity. I stood by as an observer, my own expression mirroring Xiong Li's bewilderment.
"Sell ice? What do you mean, boss? I didn’t do anything!"
Xiong Li exclaimed in shock. At that moment, Cao Hui interjected.
"Stop denying it! My men saw everything! Did you think no one would notice just because you were sneaky about it in other places? Your own underlings have already confessed! Lu Qiang! Speak up!"
