"What's the use? You understand the intricacies of this situation, and you can analyze it appropriately, but I can't. You know my circumstances well enough. I need to have a comprehensive understanding of things to make the most accurate judgment!"
I said this to Zheng Yu, who paused for a moment before laughing and replying, "That's true."
"Go on, hurry up and tell me," I urged.
I felt exasperated; it seemed like Zheng Yu was deliberately keeping me in suspense, taking his time.
"Alright, let me explain," Zheng Yu said with a smile. "Back when Lin Tianfeng was in charge, Liu Hao's backing was none other than Chen Ming from Kyoto, who was Liu Hao's superior. Geng Kun's boss is also from Kyoto—Vice Leader Ning Chuan!"
"The story goes back a while. Initially, Lin Tianfeng forbade his subordinates from engaging in underworld dealings, but Chen Ming secretly did so, resulting in several people getting seriously injured or even dying. As the Helmsman of Tian Ye Gang, Chen Ming had ways to resolve the situation without it falling on him. However, Lin Tianfeng wasn't foolish; he scolded Chen Ming thoroughly and, recalling their past brotherhood, he didn't take any harsh action against him but instead removed him from his position and appointed Ning Chuan as the new Helmsman."
"Ning Chuan arrogantly ousted Chen Ming and promised Geng Kun that he would take Liu Hao's position. But just two days after making that promise to Geng Kun, Ning Chuan suddenly told him to wait."
"Then a huge upheaval occurred within Tian Ye Gang! Overnight, half of the upper management was assassinated, including Lin Tianfeng and his children—Lin Tao and Linna."
"A few days later, Chen Ming returned to Tian Ye Gang but couldn't reclaim his old position; instead, he became the Vice Leader under Ning Chuan. The situation between Geng Kun and Liu Hao has since reached a stalemate."
Zheng Yu calmly finished his explanation. I understood now; so Chen Ming could return even after being dismissed? It seemed he had been involved in harming the Lin family! That must be why his master allowed him back; to the leaders of Tian Ye Gang, Chen Ming was likely considered a valuable asset.
"Then why do you believe Ning Chuan can't compete with Chen Ming? Ning Chuan is still alive, which means both he and Chen Ming chose to be loyal to their boss," I asked Zheng Yu.
Zheng Yu had previously told me that Geng Kun couldn't defeat Liu Hao, meaning that Geng Kun's master—Ning Chuan—wouldn't be able to hold power either. This should be clear now based on Ning Chuan's attitude.
Zheng Yu smiled and said, "Ning Chuan had a fierce conflict with Chen Ming in the past. The higher-ups knew that Ning Chuan would definitely dislike having Chen Ming return to Kyoto Headquarters, yet they still made that decision. Ning Chuan didn't oppose it; what does that indicate?"
Suddenly, it clicked for me—I understood! Just as Zheng Yu said, Ning Chuan would certainly not want Chen Ming back under his command. Kyoto Headquarters had originally belonged to Chen Ming; now having him return as Vice Leader? That would undermine Ning Chuan's authority!
Similarly, Chen Ming would prefer working with familiar subordinates since it would be much easier for him to undermine Ning Chuan. The fact that Ning Chuan didn't oppose this meant that the higher-ups were clearly favoring Chen Ming and aiming to sideline Ning Chuan! Or perhaps they planned to transfer Ning Chuan away from Kyoto after some time! In that case, Chen Ming would once again control Kyoto Headquarters!
In reality, this only increased the likelihood of Chen Ming's victory. After all, Kyoto served as the stronghold of the Tian Ye Gang; being the Helmsman there made one a leader among leaders. Ning Chuan wouldn't easily give up.
Zheng Yu chuckled at my realization. I couldn't help but smile too—let them fight it out! The more they clashed, the more likely it was that Chen Ming would come out on top!
Chen Ming, Ning Chuan, and all the surviving Helmsmen of Tian Ye Gang could all be considered accomplices in killing my father-in-law—these were once my father-in-law's brothers.
I imagine my father-in-law must have felt heavy-hearted before his passing, betrayed by so many of his brothers. Linna understands this clearly; she must feel pain for her father. I can only wonder how heavy her heart becomes when she thinks about these matters.
"What do you think? I've told you everything. What have you deduced?" Zheng Yu asked with a grin, looking at me. I chuckled and replied, "It's like watching a tiger fight from the mountain; if anything unexpected happens, it's best to protect oneself."
"That's true, but it still doesn't help much," Zheng Yu said with a smirk. I couldn't help but laugh as well. This guy, really...
As we chatted, we returned to Tianchi. There were some matters to attend to at Wanfei Distillery, and outside, Liu Sen was keeping watch while Zheng Yu and I sat in the office.
I called Linna to tell her to find a hotel to stay in for a few days and take care of herself because I was worried that this assassination attempt might involve her.
"Is there anything going on over there?" Linna asked with concern. I explained the situation to her, and after listening, she responded, "Once the candidates for the Voting Election are confirmed, there will only be three days left. You’re prepared, so they won’t succeed in an assassination attempt, but don’t let your guard down. Be cautious and try not to engage with any strange happenings these next couple of days."
"I understand. You take care of yourself too," I said with a smile before hanging up. It truly feels nice to have someone who cares.
"That’s quite refreshing," Zheng Yu said from the sofa in my office after I finished the call. I laughed in response; it felt good to finally escape the single life! Life was looking up!
"Just okay," I said modestly with a broad smile on my face. Zheng Yu smirked but didn’t say anything further; instead, he pulled out his phone and called over two of his underlings.
He called them over for my safety, and honestly, it gave me a sense of being a national leader—surprisingly satisfying!
On the first day, everything went smoothly. After work, instead of heading home, Zheng Yu brought a group of his men to the hotel where I was staying. He stationed two of his underlings at my door around the clock, not allowing anyone into my room—not even for cleaning.
The second day passed without incident as well. With two days left until voting began after yesterday's candidate selection, I sat in my office chair playing the mobile game Honor of Kings while Zheng Yu lounged on the sofa, seemingly preoccupied with his phone.
"Hey! Aren't you going to play? Let’s team up!" I called out to Zheng Yu, but he ignored me. This guy was too dull; he just lacked energy. After a while, once he finished fiddling with his phone, he finally looked over at me and said,
"Today is just the first day; Geng Kun isn’t an idiot. He knows you’re on guard, so he won’t arrange a typical assassination attempt. If my guess is correct, Geng Kun will attack from two angles."
"Go on," I replied, my thumbs flying over my phone as I battled against Cheng Yaojin in the game.
The first aspect is that Geng Kun has hired someone to assassinate you. The second aspect is that Geng Kun is looking for an excuse to lure you out and eliminate you!
"Come on, I'm playing a game here. Can't you wait until everyone is free to talk nonsense?"
I was killed by Cheng Yaojin, with a resurrection time of over thirty seconds! Actually, this has nothing to do with Zheng Yu talking to me, but since I haven't played before, it makes me feel uneasy.
What I mean is that Geng Kun will find someone from Tianchi or your friends outside to help him.
Zheng Yu added something, and upon hearing it, I raised an eyebrow. This wasn't just idle chatter; combining what Zheng Yu had said earlier, it meant that Geng Kun would look for someone within Tianchi to assassinate me because only an insider could enter my office.
Geng Kun would also use my outside friends to lure me out since I would definitely respond to them.
"You can wait and see who might show signs of betrayal. Pay attention to those around you; someone might turn against you," Zheng Yu continued with a smile. However, I frowned upon hearing this. The people inside Tianchi said that apart from Xiao Dao, I had no real friendship with them. If they betrayed me, it wouldn't be surprising. Geng Kun could easily make a promise; just offering some money would convince someone to act.
But what about the people outside? My friends?
It's important to know that Geng Kun has more than one way to manipulate people into doing things they don't want to do. The Underworld has many methods for this.
Moreover, Tian Ye Gang does not allow harm among its own members. He wouldn't leave any evidence for others to trace back. Although Geng Kun might not personally handle this matter, whoever he finds will essentially receive a one-way ticket to death; he would definitely silence them.
So wouldn't that mean my friend would be in tragedy?
No way! I won't let my problems drag my friends down! I immediately pulled out my phone to call a few friends in Kyoto. I don't have many friends there, but I should warn them to leave Kyoto as soon as possible!
Just as I took out my phone, a call came in!
The caller ID showed it was Xiao Dao!
