"Really? Is that so?" I responded after hearing the news. Liuzi was originally the manager of the bar, and he had been running the Xiao Gang Pao Bar for quite some time. Now that he had more resources at his disposal, his management skills were starting to shine.
After that, I chatted a bit more with Zheng Yu. I mentioned that Miss Fang might be a trusted Kyoto Master. Zheng Yu nodded in agreement, saying it was indeed possible, especially since Miss Fang had been assigned to handle the situation between me and Qian Cun Jin.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I asked Zheng Yu where Lu Ying had gone. Was she off on a new mission? Zheng Yu told me no, explaining that Lu Ying was a kind-hearted girl. She had just finished her assignment and was given some time off. She intended to use the ten million I had given her to support some orphans.
I nodded in understanding. I didn't say much; Lu Ying had lost her mother at a young age and had been bullied by loan sharks. She understood the pain of orphans, so her actions didn't surprise me.
After Zheng Yu left, I pulled out my phone and found Linna's number. I had been too busy these past few days to call her, and I wondered how she was doing at my place.
"What have you been up to these past couple of days? Why did it take you so long to call me?" Linna asked. I chuckled; she was still as domineering as ever.
"A few things happened. Chen Ming went to prison," I said slowly. Linna gasped in shock.
"What? Chen Ming is in prison? What happened? Is this related to you?"
"Not really," I denied. That matter was already settled, and Linna didn't even know that I had rented another girlfriend. It was best to let it end quietly.
Even if the news spread like wildfire outside, it would only be gossip among those in the circle. Linna wouldn't find out because she didn't have any friends in Kyoto, let alone connections within our circle. She wouldn't dare contact her old friends or meet new people for fear of exposing her identity and attracting the attention of Tian Ye Group.
"Are you sure it's not related? How did he end up in prison?" Linna pressed on. I smiled and fabricated a story, saying that Chen Ming had gotten caught doing something illegal and was arrested by the police. Strangely enough, I realized that I couldn't lie convincingly in front of Linna; however, when it came to phone calls, I could still perform normally.
"Do you know who the new Kyoto Master is?" Linna asked.
I replied, "It seems to be a woman with the surname Fang."
"A woman?"
"Yes."
"Is she young?"
"Yes."
"Is she pretty?"
I felt a pang of guilt. It was obvious that Linna's question stemmed from her own insecurities. How could someone as beautiful as her lack confidence?
"Oh," Linna replied, and I sighed helplessly. "How have you been at home?"
"I'm doing fine. Your parents have been very nice to me, and I've played all the games I wanted. But I think it's time for me to go back; no one is cooking for you at home."
Linna said this, and I couldn't help but sigh again. With her cooking skills? She was thinking of making me dinner?
"Whenever you're done playing, just come back," I told her. Linna agreed, and soon after, I heard my mom calling her for dinner, and then the call ended.
After hanging up, I couldn't help but smile. It was a bit unkind of me to compare Lu Ying and Linna. Both were beautiful in their own right, but Lu Ying was an excellent cook while Linna... well, she wasn't.
Though both girls could be quite mischievous at times, if I had to be honest, Lu Ying was definitely more virtuous.
Love is love; I loved Linna without any wavering due to Lu Ying's presence. There were no ulterior motives; I simply liked Linna—her playfulness and how she insisted on making me eat her terrible cooking.
Lying on the sofa at home, I smiled happily and gradually drifted off to sleep.
The next day, I summoned all the leaders of the Southern District to the Aishang Club for a meeting. The attendees included Zheng Yu, the Master of Qinglong Hall; the six sons of Hu Tang; Liu Sen, the Master of Zhuque Hall; and Wan Fei, the Master of Xuanwu Hall.
At Aishang Club, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I looked at Liu Sen, who had gotten even darker from three months in Yue Nan.
"How's it going? Did the money I sent you yesterday arrive?" I asked.
"Not yet," Miss Fang replied as I turned to Liu Sen.
"It has been distributed. Each of the thirty surviving brothers received two hundred thousand. The rest went to the seventy brothers who perished," Liu Sen confirmed.
I nodded in response. Liu Sen then informed me that they had brought back the ashes of those who had died, but some were still missing or had not been returned in full.
I felt a weight in my heart as I asked what kind of mission had led to such heavy losses among our brothers.
Liu Sen explained that they had gone to Jinshan Jiao, a lawless area where a general—essentially a warlord—forced the locals to cultivate poppies. Those who refused faced brutal punishments. The mercenary leader had taken our brothers there to confront this warlord.
"Were you successful?" I inquired. If my brothers died fighting such a monster, at least it would be for a worthy cause.
"We lost. That general is just too powerful."
Liu Sen sighed and said, "I can't believe we lost." I sighed in response.
"Don't worry, people like that won't last long," I reassured Liu Sen, patting him on the shoulder. I knew he wanted to avenge our brothers, but we didn't have the strength to do so yet. "When the day comes that we do have the power, I will avenge my seventy brothers!"
"Yeah," Liu Sen replied. Just then, one of my younger brothers informed me that a red Ferrari had arrived. It was Miss Fang!
"Let's go out to greet her," I called to everyone, and then led my brothers out of Aishang Club to welcome Miss Fang.
"Miss Fang, you're here!" I greeted her with a smile. To my surprise, she smiled back at me politely. This was unexpected; the first time I met Miss Fang, she had been cold and sarcastic even towards Qian Cun Jin. Last time at the police station, she hadn't shown any warmth and even threatened me. Seeing her smile now made me feel hopeful; it meant that the higher-ups had likely given up on pursuing Chen Ming for this matter.
"This is good news for me, for Chen Ming, and even for Qian Cun Jin," I thought.
"Let's go inside and talk," Miss Fang said with a smile as she led us into Aishang Club and into the conference room we usually used for meetings.
"I'm sure you all know about what happened yesterday. Chen Ming violated family rules and harmed the clan. Although he didn't achieve his goal, his actions were severe. The police are currently keeping a strict watch on Chen Ming, and our people won't be able to contact him for a while. Xiang Dong, don't worry; Tian Ye Group will give you a solution. As long as we can assassinate him, we will make sure he dies."
Miss Fang opened with this statement. Of course, I nodded in agreement. However, deep down I knew that Tian Ye Group would not succeed in assassinating Chen Ming. After his trial in a few days, he would be secretly relocated; aside from me and the police, no one would know where he was.
Regarding what you mentioned yesterday about Qian Cun Jin's involvement: I spoke with him yesterday. He hasn't been in Kyoto lately, although that doesn't rule out phone communication between them. Even so, Qian Cun Jin didn't have any direct involvement in this matter. So strictly speaking, only Chen Ming violated family rules—do you disagree with that, Xiang Dong?
Miss Fang continued to question me. Naturally, I smiled and said I didn't disagree. I knew that this matter could only smear Qian Cun Jin's reputation without truly implicating him.
Even though those above would love to remove Qian Cun Jin from power, if I could just say a few words to have a Helmsman from Tian Ye Group dismissed, then that Helmsman would be worth very little indeed. This would only cause other Helmsmen to become more anxious; pushing subordinates too hard isn't how a ruler operates. Even if they wanted to reduce someone's power, they should do it gradually.
"Well, since you don't disagree... You also have some responsibility in this matter. Why is Chen Ming targeting you? You already have your explanation; without new information from you, I won't say much more about it. Did you report this incident? Are you going to involve the police in our internal affairs at Tian Ye Group?"
Miss Fang raised an eyebrow at me. I immediately put on a troubled expression and said, "Miss Fang, the situation at that time was just too special! I did consider reporting it to headquarters, but then I thought—he's a Helmsman! What if something went wrong? The cost would be too great! I can't just stand by and watch my girlfriend get bullied!"
I continued explaining my reasoning: "What if I report it to Tian Ye Group headquarters and Chen Ming finds out? Wouldn't he deal with my girlfriend right away?"
"You're making valid points," she replied thoughtfully. "As a subordinate who has caused such trouble with your superior, punishment is inevitable—don't you agree?"
Miss Fang smiled slyly as she looked at me and asked about punishing me. Of course, I knew I'd definitely face some consequences; what kind of punishment did she have in mind? Surely it wouldn't be something like demotion or corporal punishment?
