"Are we really leaving?" Dong Ge asked, sounding surprised that there were no flights available from Kui City.
I replied with a thoughtful "Oh," then suggested, "Let's check if there are flights from other cities. We can drive to another city and catch a flight from there."
After all, Jinshan Jiao isn't that big; I refuse to believe we can't find a flight back home.
"Alright, let me check," Dong Ge said, pulling out his phone. After a while, he informed me that there was an evening flight back to the country from Min City, which was just an hour's drive from Kui City.
"Great, let's head out!" I called out, and soon we were on our way.
On the road, I sat in the off-road vehicle I had bought in Jinshan Jiao, with Dong Ge driving while my other companions rode in the van behind us.
We needed to leave the city and travel through the countryside. The terrain around Jinshan Jiao wasn't very good; the roads were difficult to navigate and often mountainous. As Dong Ge drove along the winding mountain roads, I caught sight of a sprawling Poppy Field below.
"It's beautiful here," I remarked, but then added with a hint of caution, "though it hides many dangers."
Dong Ge chuckled at my comment. "Since you think it's beautiful, do you like it here?"
"I don't," I replied firmly. "This kind of beauty conceals too many sins."
Dong Ge smiled knowingly and said, "Dong Ge, we're part of the Underworld. Why do you always cling to a savior mentality? This world is about survival of the fittest! There’s no reasoning behind it!"
I frowned at his words. "What you're saying is wrong. Survival of the fittest may be true, but we are human! We're not beasts; we have morals!"
"What morals?" he scoffed. "I was bullied every day in prison and no one ever spoke about morals to me."
His disdainful laugh caught me off guard. In that moment, he seemed so unfamiliar to me; he wasn’t like this before.
"If you want to work under me, don’t say things like that!" I reprimanded him. "I’m not a saint, but if our paths diverge morally, we cannot work together! My purpose in Tian Ye Group is to dismantle this criminal force! It’s about restoring justice for Linna and for society!"
"Hey, I'm just saying this for your own good," Dong Ge replied cheerfully as he continued driving. Hearing his lighthearted tone made me uneasy; I sensed something was off with him. Why was he revealing his views and ambitions at this moment?
Just as I was deep in thought, a sudden screech of brakes interrupted us!
The off-road vehicle came to an abrupt stop on the mountain road.
"What happened?" I asked, startled.
I inquired.
"Huh? I didn't hit the brakes; it must be a problem with the car. The quality of these second-hand cars around here is really terrible. Brother Dong, let me get out and take a look."
Zi spoke to me, and I responded with a reluctant agreement, feeling an uneasy premonition.
Zi got out of the car.
As he stepped out, the little brothers in the van behind us also got out!
But then, I saw them pull out their weapons!
I sighed deeply.
It was over.
Zi had betrayed me!
In that instant, everything became clear. The one who framed Liu Sen was none other than him; the one who sent Wan Fei to the hospital was also him— it was Zi!
After successfully framing Liu Sen and the others to get them imprisoned, I should have realized why they hadn’t acted sooner. If Qian Cun Jin and Liu Haoran were behind this operation, someone should have come to assassinate me by now, right?
It was clearly him!
He had orchestrated everything from the very beginning! He deliberately got Liu Sen imprisoned and Wan Fei hospitalized, all just to leave me without allies and bring him to Jinshan Jiao! And Jinshan Jiao was fraught with danger; if I died there, he would secure his position as the South District Boss!
Now he was ready to confront me.
"Brother Dong, come down. I know you've already guessed it, but it's too late. Sorry, but your sense of morality doesn’t apply here; it doesn’t work on me. You may be clever, but sometimes you’re just too naive. We are part of the Underworld! The Underworld!"
After Zi got out of the car, he surrounded me with his little brothers— all members of his Tiger Hall, all chosen by him. Zi was smart; he knew to take away the keys and keep his distance from me. I smiled, a bitter smile filled with self-mockery.
Was I really going to die here?
Die at the hands of my own brother?
How ironic!
I pushed open the door and stepped out confidently, looking at Zi as I asked, "Was it all just for power?"
In that moment, my heart felt cold.
But I couldn’t give up my will to survive!
Now Zi had ten armed little brothers surrounding me! If I fought back, it would only lead to my death!
"Heh, Brother Dong, what can I say? You’ve treated me well enough, but not that well. Why do you keep everything from me? Only telling Zheng Yu and not letting me know? And that girlfriend of yours— you rented her to fool your mother! Didn’t you tell me when you visited me in prison that once the rental period was over, you’d break up with her? Did you think I would fall for her at first sight and deceive me? After I got out, you didn’t even dare let me see her?"
Zi stood in front of me, a mocking smile plastered across his face. I tried my best to remain calm, searching for a glimmer of hope for myself. So, she left before I got here, right? Even if you don't say it, do you think I don't know? Don't worry, once I go back, I'll find her for you and take good care of her! Everything about you—your identity, your status, even your woman—will become mine! Ha ha!
Zi laughed wildly, his demeanor becoming increasingly strange. He wanted everything from me? Including my beloved Linna?
At that moment, I recalled the first time I saw Linna at the bar. Zi's eyes had shown interest in her, but due to a misunderstanding at the time, I didn't let Linna stay longer and pulled her away immediately. After Zi helped me steal my wallet, I went to see him. He even asked specifically about Linna's situation. I couldn't share too much about her with anyone, so I casually told Zi that Linna had left when her lease was up.
Damn it! I treated you like a brother, and you betrayed me! You’re even thinking about my woman!
I was furious! I could no longer suppress my emotions! Taking advantage of the distraction around me, I charged straight at Zi! I wouldn't allow anyone to lay a hand on Linna, especially not someone who used to be my brother!
Screw you! Just as I lunged at Zi, one of his lackeys kicked at me from the side! They were all Zi's people.
I didn't dodge. I had seen the situation clearly; if I didn’t move aside from that kick and step away a few paces, there would be no chance of survival! They had revealed their true colors and would definitely kill me to silence me!
I had no choice but to jump off the road and down this hill! Perhaps there was still a slim chance of survival! At the very least, I refused to die at Zi's hands! Even if I had to die, I wanted to be in control of my fate!
Thud!
I fell by the roadside, breaking free from their encirclement!
Just a few steps away from the roadside! Below is a cliff!
"Kill him!"
A loud shout rang out!
I suddenly pushed off the ground with all my might and leaped toward the edge of the cliff!
Below was a forest.
"Wait for me, you bastard! Just wait!"
I plummeted downwards rapidly!
It wasn't too high, but it was definitely not low either. I looked up to see him standing above, staring down at me with a shocked expression, and then he revealed a cold smile! I didn't know if I would die from the fall, but if I survived...
"You!"
"I swear I'll make you pay with your life!"
In the early morning, a ray of sunlight streamed into a dilapidated wooden cabin. I felt pain all over my body and slowly opened my eyes. The first thing I saw was a delicate young face.
"Ah! You're awake?"
The girl was startled by my sudden awakening. I frowned, my head feeling heavy. Looking at my body, I noticed that many places were covered in herbal poultices. My head throbbed painfully, wrapped in a piece of tattered cloth, with herbs applied close to my skin.
"Who am I? Why am I here?"
I asked in confusion. I couldn't remember anything!
"You... you don't know who you are? I found this on you. It shows you're a Huaxia person, just like me! I'm also a Huaxia person!"
The girl smiled cheerfully as she handed me a wallet, her small face radiating innocence mixed with a hint of pride.
I opened it to find only a few cards inside. One of them was a Huaxia Citizen ID Card that looked so familiar; it had my name on it—Xiang Dong! Born in 1993!
I was born in Heilongjiang, Mu City!
"Where is this? Where is Heilongjiang? Where is my home? How do I get back?"
I grabbed the girl and asked frantically. For some reason, even though I couldn't remember why I needed to go home, I felt deep down that something important was waiting for me there! I had to go back!
I had to go back!
