With a smile, Fang Ying hung up the phone without saying anything in response to my complaints. She probably knew deep down just how troublesome she could be.
When I answered the call, Linna was at home and overheard my conversation with Fang Ying. She immediately asked, "What's going on? What do you mean by not wanting to do this anymore?"
Once Yue Qing returned, she would always be around me, and I couldn't hide that from Linna. I never intended to keep it from her anyway; after all, this situation wasn't my choice. Even if Linna was being unreasonable, she wouldn't blame me, right?
But I clearly overestimated Linna. When I finished explaining everything, she became displeased. "Wow, your boss is something else! What era are we in? Still trying to arrange marriages? Xiang Dong, you better start flattering your boss; one compliment won't be enough!"
Linna crossed her arms and spoke in a sarcastic tone, clearly dismissing any notion of reason. I felt helpless. Being a man is tough.
I tried to soothe Linna, explaining that this situation wasn't something I wanted. In truth, Linna wasn't oblivious to the underlying issues; she was sharper than anyone else. She just felt annoyed because it disrupted her mood.
Fortunately, in the end, I managed to earn her forgiveness after a few comforting words and promised not to overstep any boundaries.
However, I had a suggestion: if you don't want me to go out and flirt with other girls, that's fine—it's your right as my girlfriend. But isn't there another way for a girlfriend to express her concerns?
That night, I stealthily slipped into Linna's bed for the fourth time in such a short span. What could I do? If she wouldn’t give it willingly, I had to fight for it myself. After all, she was a girl; it wasn’t right to expect her to take the initiative.
But damn it.
"Get lost! Pervert! If you dare act like a rogue again, I'll castrate you!" Linna kicked me off the bed with a flying kick, shouting at me fiercely.
I stormed out of her bedroom for the fourth time, feeling utterly humiliated. What was this nonsense? I was her boyfriend; why did it feel like I was being treated like some kind of lecher just for visiting her bed?
I wanted to shout that I wouldn’t put up with this anymore and would go hang out with Yue Qing tomorrow instead! But I held my tongue and obediently returned to my room to sleep.
The next morning, Fang Ying called me early, urging me to hurry and find Du Tao for help. After listening to her, I agreed—since it had to be done, I wouldn't delay.
After freshening up, I took a car straight to Tian Ye Group's headquarters in Kyoto Central District to meet Du Tao.
Upon arriving at the bar counter and introducing myself, the bartender notified Du Tao's secretary. Meeting Du Tao wasn’t exactly easy; there were many procedures involved since he was an important figure.
However, as the Helmsman of He Bei Province, I had the right to see him. Soon enough, Du Tao's secretary came downstairs and personally led me to his office.
When I entered Du Tao's office, he was leisurely brewing tea and greeted me with a casual nod as I arrived. "Have a seat."
I nodded and sat beside him. At that moment, Du Tao asked me, "What brings you here?"
"Well, there's something I need to tell you, but I'm a bit embarrassed about it."
"I’m definitely embarrassed; after all, I’m here to ask a big shot from the Tian Ye Group for a woman!"
Du Tao let out a cold laugh and said, "Then don’t say it."
I felt awkward. I should have guessed that Du Tao didn’t think much of me; I should have skipped the pointless small talk.
"Mr. Du, I heard you’re going to execute Yue Qing, is that true?"
I steeled myself and asked. Fang Ying had made it very clear to me that if I couldn’t pull this off, she would look down on me, just like Qu Youyang would. If that happened, I might as well give up on my future. So, I had to push through this.
"Hmm?"
Du Tao raised an eyebrow, looking at me with interest as he sneered and asked, "What do you mean? Are you trying to plead for her? She’s not like you; your mission was barely completed. Her mission was to kill those Helmsmen, and since she failed, she must be punished!"
I understood that perfectly well, but "Mr. Du, this punishment has been going on for quite some time now. I think killing Yue Qing would be a waste."
"What do you want?"
Du Tao frowned, looking at me in disbelief.
I knew it wouldn’t be easy to ask for someone—especially a woman! It was obvious to anyone that Du Tao's relationship with Yue Qing was more than just superior and subordinate; she was likely one of his lovers. How awkward!
"Yes, I want her," I said helplessly. "Honestly, I don’t want Yue Qing to die. As a man, perhaps I naturally feel a sense of compassion towards women."
"Damn!"
Du Tao laughed in disbelief as he sized me up. Then he looked at me with amusement and asked, "Are you tired of living? Coming here to ask for someone? Xiang Dong, tell me what you’re really thinking! Are you out of your mind? You should know who Yue Qing belongs to! Do you even have the right to ask for her?"
Du Tao was furious; he pushed aside the tea set in front of him, sending the teapot and cups crashing to the ground.
My face turned red as I fell silent.
I was still trying to figure out how to get Yue Qing; I really wanted her.
"Ha! Fool! Don’t say I’m not giving you face; come over here."
Du Tao stood up and said to me. Hearing this made me excited; I quickly got up and followed him over to his bookshelf. Du Tao then pressed a hidden mechanism.
The bookshelf opened up, revealing a secret room inside. Could it be that Yue Qing was in there?
The place was shrouded in darkness. Du Tao likely chose a location close to himself for the convenience of punishing her. When I stepped inside, I was taken aback by the sight of Yue Qing.
There she was, completely naked, curled up in a dim corner. The once cold and unyielding Yue Qing now resembled a frightened mouse. Her body bore countless scars, and she didn't dare to lift her head to look at me or Du Tao.
Du Tao was indeed a pervert! After something happened to Yue Qing, he must have kept her confined here, torturing her daily until he grew tired of her. Only then did he plan to kill her! How pitiful it was that the former Yue Qing had once idolized this man, calling him a Heroic Figure! What a monstrous Heroic Figure he turned out to be!
Before I saw Yue Qing, even though I wanted to save her, my feelings weren't that strong. But upon witnessing her trembling in that dark corner, covered in pitiful wounds, my heart felt as if it had been struck by a thousand blows. Perhaps I still had a shred of kindness left in me; as a man, I couldn't bear to see a woman suffer like this, even if I had never particularly liked her.
Just then, as I stared at Yue Qing in shock, a sudden crash echoed behind me—the sound of a bottle shattering on the floor. At that moment, Yue Qing tensed up immediately, clutching her legs tighter, burying her head deeper, trembling even more violently.
I wanted to help her; I remembered a scene from Gangs of Wuxia that I liked very much—walking on a path of glass while kneeling. If you could do that, you could take someone away.
Du Tao held a goblet in his hand, sipping the red wine with an air of elegance as he uttered such disgusting words to me. Pervert! Damn that twisted freak!
“What’s wrong? Afraid? Then go say your goodbyes,” Du Tao said casually. I forced a smile.
“Fine, let’s go. You better keep your word, Du Tao!” I replied with feigned cheerfulness.
Du Tao smirked and nodded as if this amused him greatly. “Of course I’ll keep my word; let’s begin!”
After he spoke, I turned my gaze toward the shards of glass scattered across the floor. If I could just walk across it on my knees, I could save a life. At that moment, memories of my days at the police academy flooded back to me. On our first day of school, our instructor delivered an opening speech.
“We are servants of the people. In the future, we may face difficult choices. I don’t expect you to be great; I only ask that you honor your badge and stay true to your heart—a heart belonging to a son of Huaxia!”
Though the instructor's words sounded grandiose, they held truth. Even though I no longer wore the badge, I was still willing to do what little I could for what I believed in.
