"Uncle Tiger, what did I do? I didn't even hear what you said! I was playing a game that day and only heard you mention someone got into trouble. You asked me what to do, so I just told you how to handle it, right?"
I frowned as I argued with Uncle Tiger, who looked completely bewildered. He never expected me to play dumb like this.
Seeing his face contort in confusion was surprisingly amusing.
"I didn't! I really didn't, Xian Shao Ye!" Uncle Tiger quickly protested. Lu Xian wasn't a fool; he had already assessed the situation and knew exactly what was going on.
"Such a Third Brother, let's just wait and see," Lu Xian said before turning to leave. Uncle Tiger hurried after him, trying to explain himself. I couldn't help but smirk as I watched them go.
I had been fed up with Uncle Tiger for a while now; he acted like a sycophant every day. So today, I intentionally decided to mess with him.
Now, to appease Lu Xian's anger, Uncle Tiger would surely choose to side with him. If he got too close to Lu Xian, then Lu Ding Tian would definitely not allow him to continue as the Enforcement Hall Master in order to balance the powers of Lu Fei and Lu Xian.
Once Uncle Tiger was out of the picture, I would become the rightful leader of the Enforcement Hall! If I were the only one calling the shots in the Enforcement Hall, I could slowly develop my own power for my own use.
After Lu Xian left, Kang Qin came in. She sat silently on the sofa, lost in her thoughts.
I knew Kang Qin was a kind girl; I had taken note of her character. If it were one of those scheming women, they would be thrilled to see me at odds with Lu Xian.
Wasn't my conflict with Lu Xian exactly what Kang Qin needed? She could easily keep her distance from me while letting me clash with Lu Xian. If Lu Xian died, she'd be happy; if Lu Xian killed me, he would also have trouble coming his way.
Yet her first reaction was to advise me not to oppose Lu Xian. Perhaps it was just an instinctive response; I couldn't tell if this naive girl had grasped the underlying dynamics of our situation. But regardless of whether she understood or not, it didn't concern me.
It took a long time for Uncle Tiger to return after leaving with Lu Xian. When he finally arrived at my office, it was clear he felt intimidated by Lu Xian's formidable strength and equally by my lack of power as a mere Third Brother.
Even though I had wronged him, he still felt compelled to explain himself to me. However, I ignored him completely and waved him off dismissively.
After sending Uncle Tiger away, I pulled out my phone and dialed Lu Fei's number. I wasn't sure if Uncle Tiger had truly allied with Lu Xian or not, but regardless, I wanted to frame him for something that would get him dismissed from his position. So I needed to discuss this matter with Lu Fei.
Before I could finish speaking, Lu Fei informed me that tonight Lu Ding Tian wanted to hold a meeting with the three of us. He told me to wait until after the meeting before discussing anything further and instructed me to stay home.
I obediently returned home and noticed that while Lu Fei hadn't arrived yet, both Lu Xian and Aunt Wu were already there. Clearly, today's events had upset Lu Xian; he might be plotting something against me.
"Third Brother! Come have some watermelon!"
Lu Xian greeted me warmly as if nothing had happened earlier when we argued in my office. I politely accepted his invitation and thanked him.
Among brothers, the one who instigates trouble usually bears greater responsibility—especially since I was still a newcomer in this family dynamic. In Lu Ding Tian's eyes, both Lu Fei and Lu Xian were far more important than me. They could put on a show in front of him, so naturally, I had to act like the obedient little brother too.
"Xiao Yan! You've been doing well lately! Your brother talked about you all afternoon today."
Lu Ding Tian spoke up from the sofa, and I was momentarily taken aback. Wasn’t he just talking behind my back? Instead, he had been discussing me all afternoon. What was Lu Xian trying to pull?
“Oh? Is that so? Then I really have to thank you, Brother,” I replied with a smile, feeling somewhat bewildered.
“Don’t mention it, Third Brother. We all see how hard you work every day in the office reviewing the Enforcement Hall’s documents. It’s clear to everyone. You play hard, but you also work seriously!” Lu Xian said with a laugh.
Lu Ding Tian chuckled in response, “Yes, Xiao Yan, seeing how much you love to have fun, I was genuinely worried you wouldn’t be able to handle it. But look at you now; your abilities are quite impressive! No wonder you’re my son! Hahaha!”
He patted my shoulder in a gesture of praise, looking quite pleased. Aunt Wu stood nearby, holding Lu Ding Tian’s foot and making comments about his genes.
After that, the conversation shifted when Lu Fei arrived, and the main topic of the day finally began.
“You three are all my sons,” Lu Ding Tian declared. “Qing Gang will eventually belong to you all, so we need to study its matters together. Today, I don’t have anything else on my mind except for Lu Yan. Your recent performance has truly impressed me; you’ve shown some real capability.”
I naturally smiled in agreement upon hearing this. At that moment, I noticed Lu Fei’s expression; he seemed somewhat surprised as well. Clearly, he hadn’t expected Lu Ding Tian to call me over just to praise me.
But it surely wasn’t just about the praise.
Today, Xiao Xian gave me a suggestion: since Lu Yan’s abilities are so commendable, it would be a bit of a waste for him to merely keep an eye on a tiger. While it is necessary for someone to watch over the tiger, it isn’t an urgent matter. So, Lu Yan, how would you feel about becoming the Enforcement Hall Master at Tian Ye Gang?
Lu Ding Tian asked with a smile.
What?
Before I could even process my excitement, Lu Fei looked shocked!
For Lu Fei, having me stay at Qing Gang was of utmost importance. For Lu Xian, however, moving me out of Qing Gang Law Enforcement Hall and sending me to Tian Ye Gang was ideal.
So today’s praise from Lu Xian was aimed at making Lu Ding Tian believe I was capable of taking on significant responsibilities and then sending me off to Tian Ye Gang!
There was also another point: today the tiger had offended Lu Xian. It was very likely that the tiger would try to appease Lu Xian by siding with him. Kicking me out at this moment would be perfect for Lu Xian.
“No way, Dad! Tian Ye Gang is chaotic! Xiao Yan has just started; how can he handle things there? It’s impossible! I feel he’s doing well enough watching Uncle Tiger at Qing Gang; otherwise, the Enforcement Hall will fall apart soon!” Lu Fei hurriedly protested.
At that moment, Lu Xian spoke up.
“Hey, big brother, that’s not right. Even if Uncle Tiger is corrupt, what difference does it make? When we replace him later on, the rules of the Enforcement Hall can be reinstated immediately. Besides, is that money really his? Once he embezzles more and we deal with him later on, won’t that money still belong to us? Our family finances aren’t exactly abundant either,” Lu Xian said with a smile.
Lu Fei was momentarily stunned by this response.
I must admit that what Lu Xian said made a lot of sense.
Lu Ding Tian's expression showed that he strongly agreed with what Lu Xian had said. However, I felt that this line of reasoning was not something Lu Xian could come up with on his own; it was likely concocted by Aunt Wu, who wore a slightly smug look on her face. She was no ordinary housewife!
"Indeed, Xiao Fei," Lu Ding Tian continued. "After all, Qing Gang is part of our family. The old tiger is merely collecting debts on our behalf. You know that Qu Youyang left behind no assets at all; she transferred everything out long ago. Although our family appears powerful now, we still need financial support."
"Is the Lu Family poor?" he asked rhetorically.
Absolutely not! Otherwise, how could Lu Fei afford to buy sports cars as if they were toys? However, the Lu Family could never match the wealth of the Qu Family. In fact, it could be said that even ten Lu Families combined wouldn't equal one Qu Family's fortune.
The situation with the Qu Family was different from that of the Du Family. When the Qu Family seized power from the Du Family back in the day, the Du Family had no time to transfer their assets. But how long has the Qu Family been maneuvering? Qu Youyang had long sought to move her wealth elsewhere; now it was all under Qu Youyi's name, leaving the Lu Family with nothing.
Running such a large organization like Qing Gang requires substantial financial backing. It certainly isn't a small amount. The Lu Family feels the pressure as well, but just look at those in Qing Gang—who among them isn't wealthy? The old tiger has barely been the Enforcement Hall Master for a while, and his assets have already multiplied several times!
So it was no surprise that Lu Ding Tian's attention was drawn here.
"Well, if you put it that way, it does make sense," Lu Fei nodded in agreement, acknowledging that Lu Xian's reasoning held weight. Having spent so much time in this family, he understood well whether there was room for negotiation in any situation. His words implied that he was determined to go to Tian Ye Gang, even though he deeply wished otherwise.
The thought of returning to Tian Ye Gang and taking on the role of Enforcement Hall Master made my lips curl into a smile. There were my old friends and rivals waiting for me; it had been so long since we last met. I wondered how they were doing now.
