In the following days, I received calls from the North Hongmen. Without a doubt, they were using Kang Qin to threaten me, saying that if I went against Lu Xian, they would deal with Kang Qin immediately.
At this point, there was no need for any pretense. I calmly told the furious voice on the other end of the line from North Hongmen, "Go ahead." After all, during the times I couldn't see, Kang Qin had already been dealt with, and I was well aware of it.
"What the hell are you talking about?" The North Hongmen member was instantly enraged. I grinned, revealing my white teeth as I clearly articulated, "Go ahead. You don’t need to send me the video; I prefer watching those from the island nation."
The person on the other end was momentarily stunned and then surprisingly brought Kang Qin into view!
"Lu Yan! Lu Yan! Help me! Don't leave me alone; please don't abandon me!" Kang Qin cried out on the video, sounding as if it were a real situation. I had to admit that her acting skills were top-notch; after spending so much time with her, I had never noticed anything unusual.
I merely smiled calmly and shook my head. There was nothing I could do about this situation; no matter how much she cried, it was futile. I had already figured out that this was just a trick to deceive me.
"What do you mean? You really don’t want this woman anymore? Fine! Then I'll live-stream it for you!" The North Hongmen member shouted angrily and turned to start tearing off Kang Qin's clothes. I simply smiled faintly and said, "Make sure you have fun," before hanging up the video call.
As expected, after I hung up, they called back immediately. I hung up again, and this continued for half an hour before the North Hongmen finally stopped calling. I treated it as a way to relieve my boredom.
Then I patiently waited for Xiang Nanyuan's arrangements while keeping an eye on whether Linna was comfortable in the police station in Kyoto.
The answer was clearly that she was not comfortable; Linna complained every day about wanting to go out and find a lawyer, insisting that the police had no right to detain her. This point was indeed valid; although she had gone into Du Tao's office with a knife, she hadn’t actually harmed him—she hadn’t even touched a single hair on his head. Therefore, the police didn’t have sufficient grounds to hold her.
Moreover, their reason for detaining her was classified information that even she couldn’t be informed about. Zheng Yu had been quite troubled by this and kept asking me to talk to Linna and persuade her not to cause any more trouble. I still refused; my reason was simple: I didn’t want her to get involved in these matters.
When Linna had been detained by the police for a week, Du Tao surprisingly stepped in to help find her a lawyer and get her released. Since Linna hadn’t committed any criminal offenses, the police could no longer hold her.
"Dong Ge, aren’t you coming back? If you don’t hurry up, Linna will be taken away by Du Tao! He’s hired a top lawyer; this whole detention situation is quite suspicious and must be resolved," Zheng Yu told me over the phone.
I felt speechless. Why did Du Tao want to save Linna now when he didn’t want to kill her before?
Having attended police academy myself, I understood that the police needed to follow regulations. If it were only Linna involved, they could handle it discreetly. However, with Du Tao hiring a lawyer and getting involved, Linna could no longer be kept there.
"Fine, I'm on my way."
I stood up and prepared to leave the office; I certainly couldn’t let Du Tao take Linna away—who knew what his intentions were?
"And who do you think you are?" Zheng Yu continued questioning.
"Lu Yan!"
I hung up after saying that and immediately headed for Kyoto. With my identity and status in place, transportation was naturally arranged perfectly; I took Lu Fei’s private jet since he was dead now and his belongings were no longer of interest to Lu Xian—they naturally belonged to me now.
I told Lu Ding Tian that I wanted to check on developments in Kyoto, and without hesitation, he agreed. Previously, when I had been threatened by North Hongmen and couldn’t act against Tian Ye Gang, I explained everything to Lu Ding Tian.
Now that I had chosen Nan Hongmen, it was time for me to return and deal with Du Tao again. Lu Ding Tian would surely think this way too; he wouldn’t stop me because North Hongmen were major suspects in Lu Fei’s case. In fact, Lu Ding Tian probably wanted to give North Hongmen a taste of their own medicine.
Upon arriving in Kyoto, I went straight to the Enforcement Hall. My suppression of Du Tao would be justified and understood by everyone; using Lu Yan’s identity as an excuse to confront Du Tao would allow me to get Linna out.
Once at the Enforcement Hall, I led Zheng Yu—the current head—and Deputy Xiao Hui directly into Du Tao’s office. Du Tao looked surprised at my arrival.
"Yan Shao? Why didn’t you give me a heads-up before coming? I could have come to greet you!"
When I entered Du Tao’s office, he was leisurely sipping tea but quickly stood up upon seeing me approach—his demeanor showed signs of tension.
He certainly knew about my choice of aligning with Nan Hongmen; therefore, he understood that my purpose for coming this time was to suppress him! Naturally, he would be nervous.
Sometimes, tension can be a good excuse to pick a fight.
"What’s wrong with me being here? Are you really that nervous, Du Zong? Why? Have you done something shameful recently that you're afraid I'll find out about?" I fixed my piercing gaze on Du Tao, whose little eyes still had that sharpness.
"What? No! Yan Shao, are you joking? What could I possibly do?" Du Tao laughed, but it was clear he was genuinely nervous. In the past, Lu Yan was someone he could easily dismiss because he had Lu Fei and Lu Xian backing him up.
But things were different now. Lu Fei was dead, and I had taken his place, becoming the true powerhouse of Qing Gang. My status alone was enough to keep him in check, and my goal was to bring him down!
Every time I saw him, I would think of that one-ton room in his office, and the image of that naked figure curled up in the corner would flash in my mind. I could never forget the sight of Yue Qing, battered and lifeless before me.
Du Tao deserved this fate!
"You say you haven't done anything, so why are you nervous seeing me?" I furrowed my brow, sitting back on the sofa with my legs crossed as I looked at Du Tao. He burst into laughter.
"Come on, Yan Shao, you're too good at telling jokes! When have I ever been nervous? It's not true! I really haven’t done anything." Du Tao spread his hands in surrender. Indeed, he had been quite honest lately; after all, in the past, he had more power than me and held leverage over me while watching me kill his friends right in front of him.
Now the tables had turned. Did it matter if he said otherwise? Only what I said mattered!
"You're full of crap!"
I stood up and slapped Du Tao across the face. It was sudden; the air went silent.
Du Tao looked at me in shock, confusion written all over his face. "Yan Shao, you've gone too far! I'm still the boss of Tian Ye Gang!"
His anger was palpable. "Boss? Oh yeah, you're impressive."
"I'm even more impressive!"
Smack! Without saying much more, I preferred to let my actions speak for themselves—another loud slap echoed through the room!
"Do you have any objections?" I asked as I stared at the furious Du Tao.
He gritted his teeth; he knew the situation all too well. If he didn’t understand it, he wouldn’t have looked like a mouse caught by a cat when he saw me.
"No!" Du Tao bit out.
I nodded in satisfaction and swung my hand again for another slap!
Smack! The sound rang out again.
No objections but still getting hit?
Du Tao was momentarily stunned. If it weren't for my status, I suspected he would have chopped me up right then and there. The key issue was that I had this identity.
"Sorry, it's just a habit."
I smiled nonchalantly as I settled back onto the sofa with my legs crossed. When Du Tao heard the word "habit," his face turned purple with anger. Zheng Yu and Xiao Hui standing nearby couldn't help but chuckle; their laughter must have been quite grating for Du Tao.
"Alright then, since you admit you saw me nervous, tell me what shady business you've been up to."
I continued the previous topic, watching Du Tao's expression shift from bad to worse, feeling an indescribable satisfaction in my heart. Sometimes, being unreasonable can be quite exhilarating, almost intoxicating.
"I didn't do anything! I really didn't!"
Du Tao continued to defend himself, but it was futile. I immediately stood up!
Du Tao instinctively took a step back.
"Don't be nervous; I'm just a bit thirsty."
I smiled and walked over to Du Tao's wine cabinet, pouring myself a glass of his red wine without a care in the world.
Du Tao visibly relaxed.
"To hell with you! You think you can hide?"
Smash!
The wine bottle shattered against Du Tao's head!
Bright red wine mixed with blood splattered everywhere.
That's right; I wasn't really after the wine; I wanted to take him down!
Let's see if you can dodge this one!
"Damn it!"
Du Tao instantly exploded with rage. Anyone would lose their temper in this situation. Just as he cursed, my guys from the Enforcement Hall pinned him down on the spot.
Looks like you're pretty tough, huh?
I chuckled as I watched Du Tao struggle on the ground, then casually sat down on a nearby sofa, crossing my legs.
"Lu Yan! You've gone too far! How dare you treat me like this? Do you really think I'm afraid of you? You're the one who insisted on causing trouble!"
Du Tao shouted loudly, undoubtedly alarming his men outside. No matter; I had already stationed some of my guys from the Enforcement Hall at the door. Although Tian Ye Gang was Du Tao's territory, he didn't have the ability to turn all of Tian Ye Gang into his own power. This place still belonged to Qing Gang!
As long as North Hongmen doesn't show up, I can torment this brat as much as I want!
"Is that so? Because I think it's quite the opposite. You seem very afraid of me."
I sneered as I took out Zheng Yu's dagger, playing with it in my hands. I still remembered very clearly that time when Du Tao used a similar knife to slice every inch of skin on my face and even went for my little brother.
Karma has come knocking.
