Inside the Purple Palace, Luo Yuhua sighed as he pressed his forehead.
"I have investigated the matter you asked me to look into, and I have found some clarity. Currently, the investigation into treason can only focus on Zheng Changsheng. However, while following this lead, there is someone who seems unrelated to the treason but has frequent contact with Zheng Changsheng."
Su Qianxue perked up with interest. "Who is it?"
"During the previous investigation, we hit a dead end with Zheng Changsheng. It seems we need to follow the lead of the Lin Family Army now."
"Yu Gaofei," Luo Yuhua continued. "He has no connection to the Lin Family Army and does not hold any military position at all. How did he come to know Zheng Changsheng?"
With a heavy heart, Luo Yuhua dug deeper into this line of inquiry. He discovered that Yu Gaofei was associated with Langya Wangfu.
"I thoroughly investigated and found that Yu Gaofei holds no significant position in court; he is merely a disposable pawn for Langya Wangfu."
This was unexpected. He had initially wanted to probe Langya Wangfu further, but now it seemed unnecessary. Their intentions were glaringly obvious.
Su Qianxue scoffed, "I once thought that Zi Ye from Langya Wangfu and General Lin shared true love, but it appears they are merely using each other."
She slammed her hand on the table in frustration, startling Luo Yuhua.
"Your Majesty, is there anything else you would like me to do?" he asked.
Su Qianxue rubbed her nose thoughtfully. "Continue investigating along the line of Yu Gaofei and see what else can be uncovered from him."
Luo Yuhua nodded, feeling a headache coming on as he accepted his orders.
She had investigated many matters before, but never thought she would find herself looking into Langya Wangfu and Lin Manor. It seemed she needed to prepare for offending Langya Wangfu in advance.
Zhuo Zishi looked at her frail mother, tears streaming down her face without her realizing it. When they first arrived at the General's residence, although her mother was not in perfect health, she certainly did not look as emaciated as she did now.
Zhuo Zishi clenched her fists and asked, "May I ask, Lin General, how have you been taking care of my mother during this time?"
Lin Qingyue scoffed and replied, "When your mother was gravely ill and you had no money for treatment, the General's residence paid for her medical care. And now you come to question me about how I cared for her? What could I do? Naturally, I continued to keep your mother alive with medicine. Should I have found a maid to treat your mother like a child?"
This was not untrue. Before coming to the General's residence, Zhuo Zishi had worked in a small shop. When her mother fell ill and they could not afford treatment, Lin Qingyue had stepped in to save her. However, looking at her mother's current state, it was clear that the General's residence had not treated her well.
Zhuo Mu seemed to realize something and quickly knelt down to plead with Lin Qingyue, "My child is being foolish; please forgive us, Lin General." After speaking, she raised her head to Zhuo Zishi and said, "You just stay by the General's side and do your work; I know my own body."
After all, no mother would be happy seeing her son grow strong while she herself was suffering. Zhuo Zishi now looked much healthier than when she had last seen her mother. This only further indicated that the General's residence treated Zhuo Zishi well; at least in terms of food and clothing, there had been no shortage!
What her mother did not know was that Zhuo Zishi's current state was entirely due to Jiang Han's care. She even thought that despite the pain in her body tonight, she would wash a few more pieces of clothing for the General's residence.
Zhuo Zishi felt a lump in her throat. What more was there to understand? Although her mother was still being kept alive by medicine, it was clear that it was not effective. The promise made by the General's residence to let them leave together was nothing but a facade! They intended to use them until they were no longer needed!
She tried to calm herself down: "General, please forgive me; I am willing to continue serving you."
Seeing his attitude soften, Lin Qingyue looked down even more upon Zhuo Zishi.
"Now that your mother has seen it, it's time to tell Ben Jiangjun about Jiang Han's secret."
Zhuo Zishi did not mention anything about Jiang Han; instead, he asked, "May I have a word with the general in private?" He glanced at his mother, as if there was some information he did not want her to hear.
Lin Qingyue was even more pleased with Zhuo Zishi's attitude. She signaled for a maid to take Zhuo Mu back to her room while she followed Zhuo Zishi into the garden.
Once they were alone, Zhuo Zishi finally spoke, "Can the general allow my mother to return home to live out her days in peace?"
Lin Qingyue neither agreed nor disagreed; she simply stared at him intently. Zhuo Zishi felt a bit guilty, but for his mother's sake, he gritted his teeth and said, "This secret is known only to me and Shopkeeper Jiang. If I tell you, Shopkeeper Jiang will definitely not let me off easily. He has killed a Dead Man before and will not spare a small fry like me. I just want to fulfill my filial duty to my mother before I die."
Lin Qingyue did not take Zhuo Zishi seriously. She was weighing whether letting him go today would risk her own secrets being exposed. Although she and Jiang Han no longer had any engagement, Zhuo Zishi knew that she was the one who had called off the engagement, and it was for the Langya Prince. If this information got out, it would be detrimental to both her and the Langya Prince.
For now, everyone believed that she and Jiang Han had ended their engagement due to a lack of feelings. After thinking it over, she decided to agree; if he really dared to expose her secret, she could always kill him.
Lin Qingyue smiled and said, "Now that you have money and no longer need Lin Manor to support your mother, you can take her away. But first, tell Ben Jiangjun how Jiang Han acquired so much grain!"
Zhuo Zishi instantly breathed a sigh of relief. "It's in a dilapidated temple. As for the exact location, I will let you know after I settle my mother."
Lin Qingyue felt something was off. "What old temple could possibly have so much grain?"
Zhuo Zishi replied innocently, "I don't know; I've never been there myself. However, every time Shopkeeper Jiang visits that temple, he brings back some grain. Over time, it has accumulated quite a bit."
To quickly verify whether Zhuo Zishi was lying, she waved her hand and said, "Alright, take your mother away. But if you dare deceive me, you know what the consequences will be."
