A hoarse and sinister laughter echoed from the other side of the forest, drawing closer.
"Everyone, I, Bai Yuan, have treated you with sincerity and respect, yet you dare to sneak into the forbidden grounds of the Bai Family. What are your intentions?" Bai Yuan led dozens of Bai Family disciples to the edge of the woods, locking eyes with the Lin Family and their companions.
Damn it, this old fool is turning the tables on us. How dare you bring me here under false pretenses and then frame me! A young man closest to the Bai Family Elder fumed with anger.
"Enough noise! When did it become your turn to speak, junior?" Bai Yuan swept his sleeve, unleashing a spiritual talisman that struck the young man squarely in the face.
Mmmph! The young man clamped his hands over his mouth, struggling to speak.
"What have you done?" A middle-aged man stepped forward, shielding the young man.
A middle-aged woman beside him hurriedly checked her son's face.
"What’s happening? Son, your mouth!" The woman stammered in a panic.
"Hmph! You dare to act recklessly on my Bai Family's territory!"
"You old fool—"
"What? Do you want to end up like your son?" Bai Yuan waved his hand at Bai Shi.
"Bai Shi, take action!"
Five individuals stepped out from behind Bai Shi, forming a line. They quickly began forming hand seals, and shadows from the forest swiftly drifted toward them.
They quickly surrounded Yan Kongyue and her companions.
The shadows seemed weightless as they silently floated around them. On this summer night, the lush leaves remained still; even the chirping of insects and birds in the forest ceased. The silence was unnervingly profound.
"Puppet Ghosts!" A girl’s clear voice pierced through the eerie quietness with undeniable clarity.
"Who are they?" Bai Shi looked in surprise at the group surrounded by Puppet Ghosts.
"Just a trivial skill; how dare you flaunt it before me!" As she spoke, Yan Kongyue slightly parted her red lips and uttered words that no one could comprehend. Her voice was soft but resonant.
The Bai Family members couldn’t help but scoff at what they thought was just a little girl speaking.
But in the next moment, their smiles froze on their faces as the Puppet Ghosts that had surrounded Yan Kongyue began to slowly surge toward the Bai Family's position, hovering ominously above their heads.
With a sharp snap of fingers, a sound echoed through the crowd. Instantly, all the floating Puppet Ghosts ignited in flames. The Puppet Ghosts shrieked and struggled as the fire raged, pieces of burning flesh falling onto the Bai Family members, who scrambled in panic. Yet, the Puppet Ghosts seemed relentless, pursuing them until they too caught fire before shifting their focus to another target.
Bai Yuan, already frail with age, was in a particularly dire situation as he was chased by the Puppet Ghosts. Bai Shi stood at the center, using his own body to shield the Bai Family Elder from most of the flames.
As the Puppet Ghosts burned out quickly, most of the Bai Family members rolled on the ground, trying to extinguish the flames. Though the fire was out, the burns left behind were agonizing.
Yan Kongyue paid them no mind and moved towards a young man who had been silenced by a binding talisman. She patted his shoulder, and he felt a sudden release; with a gasp, he exclaimed.
“Wow! That was incredible!” A middle-aged woman looked at her son with concern.
“Thank you so much!”
“Oh my, thank you! Thank you!”
“Miss, please leave your name; my Shen Family will surely reward you!”
“No need for that; whether I can survive this is still uncertain!”
The couple’s words were abruptly cut off as they choked on their gratitude.
“What are you scaring them for?” Old Man Lin said affectionately while leaning on his cane.
“Do you know her?”
“Of course! She’s a relative of Aunt San!”
