Along the wide and smooth road, John sat leisurely in a slightly worn but still sturdy wagon, allowing the horses to pull it forward at a relaxed pace.
Although the wagon was only half-loaded with goods, it was not to be underestimated. After all, John was taking away half of the twenty wagons he had purchased on his last trip! The ten wagons moved one after another, resembling a long dragon slowly winding its way along the road. Their destination was Wutan City, a place renowned for its abundant high-quality ores.
Even though there were no blacksmiths in the territory capable of utilizing these ores yet, John firmly believed that it was always wise to prepare for the future. Thus, he was determined to purchase some iron ore regardless of the circumstances.
His experiences on the front lines mingling with nobles seemed easygoing and pleasant, but in reality, he had gained a wealth of valuable information through these interactions. The Hecha Kingdom was currently at a turning point, with a significant upheaval brewing quietly.
Recently, the king's eldest son had unfortunately succumbed to a dreadful illness. This sudden piece of news caused tensions to rise sharply within the court, as all three princes eyed the coveted throne with fierce ambition.
The Second Prince had garnered support from many noble factions in the eastern region as a solid backing; the Third Prince won over the western nobles through his charm and cunning; as for the Fourth Prince, although he had not yet secured external noble assistance, his maternal grandfather was the Minister of Military Affairs, controlling more than half of the military power in the capital. Consequently, a significant portion of military strength within the capital belonged to the Fourth Prince.
Based on John's accumulated experiences from countless online literary works he had read in his past life, he judged that such a tense situation would inevitably lead to an intense civil war sooner or later. Once war broke out, steel prices would undoubtedly soar. With this thought in mind, John's lips curled into a slight smile; even if he didn't manufacture weapons, simply trading them would yield substantial profits.
A soldier jogged from the front of the convoy to report to John. "Sir, there's an abandoned village up ahead. Should we stop here for today?"
"Why stop so soon?" John lazily sat up and glanced at the sky. He had slept so soundly that he hadn’t realized it was nearly evening.
"Is it already this late? Fine then, tell everyone to search the village and we'll stay here for the night."
Having some roof overhead was certainly better than camping out in the wilderness. John stretched his stiff arms and climbed down from the wagon. After lying down all day, it was time to move around.
As he followed the convoy into the village, John noticed many abandoned settlements along the way—most were due to orc invasions, though some were also caused by bandits and pirates known as Horse Bandits.
They found two houses that were still relatively intact. His soldiers began cleaning up while the cook prepared dinner.
John walked over to a large pot and watched as the cook worked. He directed him on how to prepare the meal. "Make sure to add plenty of chili and moisture."
Several chefs hurriedly adjusted the dishes according to John's instructions. It was important to note that John was not only their leader but also their mentor; all of their cooking skills had been taught by him.
Just as he was about to take a sip of soup, Kuiradi rushed over in a flurry.
With a sigh, he set down the ladle and looked at Kuiradi with a weary expression. "What's wrong? Why are you in such a hurry?"
