The next morning, sunlight broke through the clouds, casting its rays upon the earth and waking the soldiers on guard. A few cooks began their busy morning routine.
John stood by the pot of boiling water, scooping some out to wash up. He wasn't sure if it was the filthy environment or the chemical products that had harmed his body, but despite the lack of proper cleaning supplies in this strange world, his hair was surprisingly free of grease. The dust and grime on his skin washed away easily with water, and none of those around him seemed to have acne-ridden faces, thanks to the refreshing atmosphere of this otherworld.
"Sir, two Serfs didn’t make it; they’re gone," came a voice.
John wiped his face clean and absorbed the bad news—he had lost two of his assets. Some of these Serfs had been injured in the wild, and others had wounds that had festered. What he had thought would be survivable turned out to be wishful thinking.
"Help them out; don’t let them suffer too much. Remember to bury them—let their souls return to the heavens and their bodies to the earth. May there be no death in paradise," he added quickly, as another thought crossed his mind.
"Make sure to strip them of their clothes; they can still be sold." He was a frugal man and couldn’t stand waste.
After three hours in the morning, they finally arrived at Wutan City. Looking at the city before him, he felt an immense envy. A man should aspire to such heights; he wondered when he would have a city like this.
He paid an entry fee of thirty-seven Silver Coins and forty-two Copper Coins, leading his group grandly toward the political hall outside.
Wutan City was not under the jurisdiction of any single noble's territory; it was a bustling commercial city governed by a parliamentary system. This city was originally established by the Seventeen Families—merchants and nobles of varying scales and strengths. Unlike traditional nobles who possessed actual lands and subjects, these merchant nobles held significant status within the city but did not directly rule over any subjects. However, their substantial wealth and financial power became their strongest backing.
Whenever a noble visited this place, they were required by regulation to register at a designated location. Of course, those who chose not to comply would not face any substantial punishment; they simply wouldn’t be able to enjoy the enticing Discount Card.
John’s purpose for coming to Wutan City wasn’t for that discount card; he merely hoped to minimize unnecessary troubles as much as possible. As he stepped into the building responsible for noble registration, he immediately inquired,
"I am an Actual Knight from Salty Fish Village. Is this where I can register as a noble?"
Upon hearing this, the attendant behind the counter quickly stood up, her face adorned with a warm and obsequious smile as she respectfully replied,
"Indeed it is, esteemed Knight Lord! Welcome to our humble establishment!"
Seeing the other person's humble and courteous demeanor, along with the respectful address, John felt a sense of satisfaction within himself, unable to resist the urge to give a thumbs up.
Feigning casualness, he asked, "So, after completing the registration, is the Discount Card also collected here?"
The attendant smiled and gently nodded, retrieving a beautifully crafted card from the drawer and presenting it to John while patiently explaining. "Yes, this is the Discount Card we have specially prepared for our esteemed guests. As long as you make purchases at any of the stores marked with Seventeen Families, which are operated by nobles, you will enjoy corresponding discounts."
After finishing her explanation, she maintained her polite smile, quietly waiting for John's next move.
"Alright, thank you," John replied.
Looking at the card in his hand, John couldn't help but admire these Noble Merchants. This card not only facilitated the flow of people within the city but also provided each noble visitor with a small gift to strengthen their relationship. Most importantly, anyone wanting to engage in business in this city would first need to obtain this discount card to proceed further.
