John looked at the list in his hand, calculating his money and contemplating that he would have to sell the glass first.
“Do you accept goods at the Chamber of Commerce?”
“Yes, but we only accept high-end items. I wonder what you have?”
Luni thought to himself, completely unable to guess what kind of item John intended to sell. Nevertheless, he left some room for negotiation and did not outright refuse; he merely implied that if the item presented was of poor quality, they would not accept it.
John slowly reached into his pocket and carefully pulled out an object, placing it gently on the table. With a slight smile and a hint of confidence, he said, “What do you think of this piece of Volcanic Jade?”
Upon hearing the words "Volcanic Jade," Luni's eyes widened in surprise, his previously indifferent demeanor shifting instantly. He hurriedly put on the gloves he had prepared and cautiously cradled the so-called Volcanic Jade in his hands, focusing intently on examining it.
Luni held the Volcanic Jade under the light, scrutinizing every detail with great concentration. He first examined its material, feeling its unique texture; then he squinted his eyes, seriously studying its refractive index and luster; finally, he assessed the shape of the jade.
After a long period of observation and contemplation, Luni finally set down the Volcanic Jade and gently shook his head, expressing regret.
“Yes, it is indeed Volcanic Jade, but the base color is not very pure! You see, the most precious varieties of Volcanic Jade are those that are colorless and transparent. As for yours, it has some mixed colors that detract from its beauty. As they say, a thousand taels of gold can buy one pure piece; what a pity!”
After saying this, Luni carefully placed the piece he referred to as Volcanic Jade back on the table.
John was not concerned about Luni's comments regarding color purity; he was solely focused on determining how much this piece of glass was worth.
“Stop rambling and just tell me how much this thing is worth!”
Luni paused for a moment before slowly stating a price.
“If you intend to sell it, I’ll give you a straightforward price. For a colorless gem of this size, its value could reach four hundred gold coins. However, since yours has mixed colors, we need to deduct a zero from that—so it’s forty gold coins.”
Upon hearing this figure, John's eyes widened in disbelief as he couldn't help but exclaim loudly, “What?!”
Clearly, he had not anticipated that this gem could be worth such a high price.
Seeing John's excited reaction, Luni couldn't help but ponder whether he had set the price too low. To be honest, after quoting that price, he knew he would still make quite a considerable profit. According to his initial estimate, if he resold this gem to someone knowledgeable about it, he could probably sell it for around ten gold coins.
Luni immediately adopted a rather difficult expression and said, “How about this: forty-three gold coins? I really can’t go any higher. You should understand that selling it is not an easy task for us.”
When John heard the figure of forty-three gold coins, disbelief still lingered on his face as if everything felt unreal—a mere dream.
Seeing that John still had not nodded in agreement, Luni hurriedly spoke up again to add more.
