A severed arm rolled to the feet of John. With a firm step, the arm that had been twitching finally stopped moving.
"Is anyone injured?" John asked calmly.
A soldier raised his hand. "Yes, my lord, I was pierced in the leg by a fallen spear."
"Hahaha, poor kid!" Laughter erupted from the surrounding comrades, though their eyes betrayed a sense of relief that he was still alive.
John's previously suppressed mood lightened as a smile crept onto his face; he truly hadn’t expected to encounter such a misfortune.
Then, an orange was thrown from John's hand into the injured soldier's grasp. "Eat this; it will help you heal faster!"
The soldier who received the orange quickly signaled to a nearby comrade to pull out the spear and bandage his wound. He then swallowed the orange in one bite. Everyone knew their Lord had many good things, and this orange would aid in his swift recovery.
John chose not to look at the unfortunate soldier any longer. Feeling the weight of unseen eyes upon him, he leaped into action, his toes barely touching the trees as he ascended above the forest floor. With a few swift swings of his One-Handed Sword, the spider cocoons fell from the treetops.
Crack! Crack!
A few men rushed to cut open the cocoons to see if anyone inside could be saved. The spider silk was strong and sticky, and for a moment, several soldiers struggled with their Iron Swords and spears against the tough threads.
Watching these clumsy soldiers, Kuiradi scratched his head in disbelief. "How can you not understand such a simple order? If swords won't work, use fire!"
He picked up a torch nearby and ignited the spider silk. To his surprise, it caught fire instantly and began to burn rapidly. Timing it just right, Kuiradi yanked one of the trapped soldiers free from within.
This small act of ingenuity earned Kuiradi some respect from John; he hadn’t expected such quick thinking from one of his more reckless subordinates.
Approaching Kuiradi, who was crouched down examining the situation, John asked, "Is there still hope?"
Kuiradi placed his hands on the soldier's chest, neck, and mouth, checking for signs of life.
Finally, he stood up helplessly.
It was too late; the monster must have strangled him before packing him up. He was already cold, and if they had waited any longer, there would be no warmth left in his body.
John nodded, feeling little. After all, he had seen too many dead bodies.
They should bury him, and his teammates could collect his Wu Lan gear. The man was dead, but the equipment was still intact; it couldn’t go to waste.
While directing others to bury the body, John took a torch and began to burn the spider silk cocoons. It was like unboxing a mystery; he wanted to see what was inside these things.
