After the shout, Gervas kept a close watch on the halted convoy while vigilantly observing the surroundings. Just then, he suddenly noticed the leader of the convoy striding toward him.
Seeing this, Gervas instinctively reached for the sword at his waist, but then reconsidered. Given their current strength and condition, if a fight broke out, they would likely be no match for the other party. Thus, he suppressed his worries and quietly awaited the approach of the stranger.
"Relax, my friend. I bear you no ill will," John said with a helpless shake of his head. He truly hadn't expected these individuals to be so panicked. If he had genuinely harbored murderous intent moments ago, it would have been as easy as pie to take their lives.
Gervas forced himself to appear calm, but his slightly trembling voice betrayed his inner fear. "Your Excellency, may I ask what your intentions are?"
John's expression suddenly darkened; his previously gentle demeanor turned cold and stern. His tone shifted to one of seriousness: "It's not about what I intend to do; it's about what you all want. I spared your lives just now, yet why do you still foolishly follow me? Do you think my blade is not sharp enough to instill fear in you?"
Before he finished speaking, the soldiers accompanying John drew their gleaming long knives in unison. In an instant, a flurry of blades flashed menacingly, startling the horses of the Wandering Knights into whinnying and stepping back several paces before regaining their footing.
Gervas felt the atmosphere grow increasingly tense and oppressive, cold sweat trickling down his forehead. Desperate to explain himself, he stammered, "M-Master, we actually—"
But the words caught in his throat as if something was blocking them; he couldn't get them out. Watching the glinting blades draw closer, Gervas knew that if he didn't clarify the situation soon, things could end badly for him. Taking a deep breath and summoning his courage, he continued, "We actually wish to pledge our loyalty to you and serve under your command."
Finally getting the words out eased Gervas's tension as he awaited John's response; after all, he had done all he could.
"Oh," John replied thoughtfully, furrowing his brow as he pondered this revelation. His piercing gaze scrutinized the thirteen individuals before him; with his experience and keen insight, he quickly assessed their capabilities.
The leader and two others exuded a noticeably stronger aura than the rest; they had reached the Half-Step Transcendent realm, also known as Knight Attendant level. The remaining ten were merely ordinary mortals.
However, John understood that even though these individuals had not yet stepped into the Transcendent domain, they had undergone professional training and possessed certain combat skills and knowledge. If he could bring them under his wing and provide proper guidance and training, they could very well break through their limitations and advance to become Half-Step Transcendent beings in time.
Moreover, it was remarkable that every one of them could read! This fact reminded John of his former Master; literate individuals often made excellent officer candidates.
At this moment, John contemplated: leading a large force with many who had consumed Bloodline Knight Potions had always left him lacking truly qualified officers to command them.
If he could recruit this small team, it would undoubtedly provide a significant boost to his army's combat effectiveness—far outweighing any potential drawbacks.
As for concerns about betrayal? The likelihood was minimal. In this vast continent, recruiting young and promising Wandering Knights was commonplace.
There were hardly any reports of new recruits betraying their masters; at most, they simply chose to leave. After all, betrayal was a violation of continental rules—akin to seeking one's own demise.
