Three Days Later
In the splendid and bustling royal palace of the capital, numerous invited nobles were being led by the inner court officials into the grand hall. The spacious and brightly lit chamber was adorned with exquisite banquet arrangements, exuding an enticing aroma. However, at this moment, despite the uncertainty surrounding the appearance of the new king, it did not dampen the enthusiasm among the attendees to forge connections with one another.
For these nobles, such gatherings often amounted to mere displays of insincerity. On the surface, everyone engaged in lively conversation, presenting a harmonious scene; yet beneath it all, each harbored their own intentions, filled with intrigue and desire.
Take a look at the group of nobles beside John; their conversations were laden with indecent topics. They either extolled the beauty of a certain enchanting maiden from their territories or passionately discussed the allure of some noble widow. Not far away, a few others were whispering about a male servant who bore an uncanny resemblance to one of their concubines. Such scenes were indeed shocking.
Do not be surprised by this phenomenon; throughout history, there have always been those among the nobility who favored same-sex relationships. One of the most notable examples is Li Chengqian, son of Emperor Taizong of Tang. In this Western world, such inclinations have been taken to extremes. The current hottest topics include Blowhard and the infamous Loli Island, both showcasing just how decadent and indulgent noble life can be here.
Faced with such distasteful conversations, John felt embarrassed to continue listening. He quickly moved to another group of more conventionally oriented individuals. To joke about it, John was not exactly a paragon of virtue himself, but at least he could engage in pleasant conversation with this group without feeling too awkward.
"Hello there."
"Oh, it's Baron John!" A few quickly made room for him to sit down.
In recent days, John had gained some notoriety; after all, how many barons could claim to be an Epic-level expert? Most of those invited were barons and viscounts, making John's status as an Epic knight quite unique. It was no surprise that those who had invited him had already singled out any troublesome nobles to avoid misunderstandings.
"What do you think the king summoned us for?" one asked.
"What for? Who knows?" they exchanged knowing smiles. "But it certainly isn’t for handing out money."
A group gathered around a table, enjoying fragrant wine as they savored fine delicacies while engaging in light-hearted banter. As time passed, the alcohol began to work its magic, loosening tongues and emboldening their discussions. It was unclear who initiated the topic about women, but once it was broached, it was as if a dam had burst—everyone's chatter became unrestrained.
The previously somewhat reserved atmosphere vanished without a trace; it felt as though this table full of people had transformed into good friends who could discuss anything openly. Some even grew bold enough to casually drape an arm around John's shoulders while gesturing toward a distant table.
"Brother John, do you see that table over there?" one asked conspiratorially.
"Oh? Of course I see it." Following his gesture, John noticed that table stood out distinctly—it was occupied entirely by women! It was worth noting that this banquet did not only host male nobles; there were also some highborn ladies present. Although female lords were relatively rare, they certainly existed.
