The journey was far from smooth. A widespread disaster had caused bandits and outlaws to run rampant, and almost every few miles, they encountered robbers attempting to block their path.
Fortunately, the martial prowess of Dian Wei and Chu Yan was fearsome enough to instill dread in their foes. Typically, a mere display of their strength would send most bandits fleeing in terror, eager to avoid trouble. Of course, there were some small groups of misguided bandits who attempted to provoke them, but they were swiftly subdued by the short yet formidable spear in Dian Wei's hands, leaving them to retreat in disgrace.
As the carriage carried Dian Wei and Chu Yan forward, Chu Yan, seated at the driver's position, couldn't help but ask, "Brother Dian, we're almost home now. What are you thinking about?"
Upon hearing this, Dian Wei's expression grew heavy. "I must admit, I feel a bit anxious. I've been away for over a month and have no idea how my family is doing."
Chu Yan immediately offered reassurance. "Brother Dian, please don't worry too much. I'm sure your uncle and aunt are waiting for you at home. Everything will be fine."
Dian Wei gazed ahead and softly replied, "I hope so."
With that, the two continued on their way. Following Dian Wei's directions, the carriage left the main road and turned onto a narrower path, winding around bends until the surroundings transformed into an entirely unfamiliar landscape.
Just as Chu Yan began to wonder if they had taken a wrong turn, a row of somewhat dilapidated old houses came into view.
Seeing this scene brightened Dian Wei's heart; he quickly pointed to a nearby rammed earth house and explained, "Look, that's my home!"
Chu Yan nodded in agreement and urged the horse to quicken its pace towards their destination. During this process, he noticed something unusual not far away.
"Brother, look over there! Aren't those people moving towards your house?" he pointed out.
Following Chu Yan's gaze, Dian Wei indeed saw a group of people dressed in various garments heading toward his home. Many faces were familiar; they were mostly his fellow villagers. At the forefront of the crowd stood none other than Chen Zeng, the village chief.
This land was known as Bai Jia Village—not because everyone in the village shared the surname Bai but because it was home to people from different families and clans who had settled here after escaping numerous calamities. Thus, it earned the reputation of Bai Jia Village.
Since the villagers did not share blood relations, the position of village chief was always appointed by the authorities. Chen Zeng had managed to bribe the magistrate of Jiwu County and was fortunate enough to become the village chief.
After becoming the village chief, his ugly nature gradually revealed itself. He bullied women, oppressed the men, and employed various means to seize others' land and resources, leaving no stone unturned. In such a social environment, cunning individuals like Chen Zeng often thrived.
Day by day, his followers grew in number, and his power expanded. By the time Dian Wei left, nearly half of the village's land had already been occupied by Chen Zeng. But why had he suddenly come to visit my home today?
Seeing this situation, Dian Wei furrowed his brows. Beside him, Chu Yan inquired, "Brother, should we go investigate?"
Dian Wei nodded in agreement. "Yes, but let's not alert them just yet. I want to see what tricks they are up to."
Once he received consent, Chu Yan tightened the reins and brought the cart to a halt with a sharp exhale. The two secured the cart and then cautiously approached.
