The sun was about to set, painting the clouds at the horizon in a dazzling fiery red, signaling the end of the day.
Knock, knock, knock.
A series of rhythmic knocks echoed at the door of Anlius Apothecary. After lying in bed for several hours, Anlius, who had been sleeping soundly, was jolted awake by the persistent knocking.
Damn it, why is that brat back again?
He rubbed his sleepy eyes, a hint of anger on his face as he glared towards the door. With irritation bubbling inside him, he hurriedly made his way to the entrance and flung the door open, exclaiming angrily,
"What do you want this time? Don’t you know I’m trying to sleep—"
His words caught in his throat as he took in the sight of a slightly puzzled young man standing before him.
"Uh, Anlius the Divine Healer, did I come by this morning?"
Long Tao, one of Hu Xu's underlings, scratched his head and asked Anlius, who was still in a daze.
"Uh, haha, sorry about that. I’m just a bit grumpy after waking up. That was just a dream—yeah, a dream! It’s pretty cold outside; come in quickly."
He thought to himself how he wished it were that tobacco-selling brat instead.
As Anlius picked at the floor with his toes while mentally cursing Ye Wumeng, he chuckled and ushered Long Tao into the room, inviting him to sit at the table.
"Haha, Long Tao, is there something you need?"
Long Tao accepted the glass of water that Anlius poured for him and took a sip before responding with a smile.
"Nothing much; it’s just that Hu Laoda sent me to ask if you managed to heal that person who came in with Corpse Rat Infection."
"A person sent here? No one came."
Anlius paused slightly, his mind racing to recall recent events.
"When did this happen?"
Hearing Anlius's response left Long Tao bewildered. He set down his glass of water and stood up abruptly, urgency creeping into his voice as he asked quickly,
"How is that possible? Hu Laoda personally brought him in and even gave him a Blue Card! There’s no way he wouldn’t have made it here!"
Listening to Long Tao’s words, Anlius searched through his memories and firmly stated,
"No one has come under Hu Xu’s name seeking treatment recently."
"Isn’t it just an Infected Person? Why all this fuss?"
Long Tao sighed heavily as he returned to his seat, disappointment etched on his face as he muttered to himself,
"Maybe he died at the City Gate. Hu Laoda didn’t tell him how to enter the city; he probably got treated as an Infected Person... What a shame! Hu Laoda finally found someone with a similar constitution and now he’s gone."
Long Tao sat at the table looking regretful while Anlius, casually sipping water beside him, suddenly felt a jolt of realization and spluttered out some of his drink in shock.
"Pfft!"
Long Tao exclaimed, "What did you just say? What's wrong with that person's constitution?" He looked at the surprised Anlius in front of him, wiping the taste of water mixed with saliva from his face, and asked in confusion.
"It's just like Hu Laoda. The Corpse Rat Infection progresses incredibly slowly. According to Hu Laoda, that person seems to have an even stronger constitution than him and managed to hold on for about six days after being infected."
"Six days after being infected! The Virus Embryo! A prime experimental subject with a high probability of becoming an Evolver! What did I miss? When did Hu Xu come over?"
"About ten days ago," Anlius replied, slumping into his chair, his eyes filled with tears of regret. "What have I truly missed?"
He had missed the best opportunity this time; next time their attack would surely be even more ferocious.
At the top floor of the Bonfire Corps Headquarters, in the Vice Commander's office, Lixiang sat at his desk, one hand holding a piece of Lanstad's specialty dry bread while nodding along to Xu Duan's words.
"You know, we don't even know who they really are. Even if we want to catch them, we can't."
Xu Duan leaned back against his chair, his face filled with helplessness.
"I asked people from the Reformist faction; he belongs to the Flesh Offering Church."
Lixiang took a big bite of the dry bread and chewed laboriously, mumbling indistinctly. "Flesh Offering Church?"
Xu Duan looked puzzled.
"According to the information from those Reformists, it seems that this Flesh Offering Church emerged from the south. Their doctrine believes that Corpse Energy is the origin of everything in the universe and that Undead beings are higher-dimensional entities compared to humans. They firmly believe that humanity can coexist with Undead beings. They're just a bunch of lunatics."
Lixiang finished eating his dry bread while Xu Duan began to ponder thoughtfully.
"So that Anlius is a member of this Flesh Offering Church?"
"That's right. But he's just a small fry; the real big fish we need to catch hasn't even surfaced yet."
Lixiang licked his fingers and pulled another piece of dry bread from the drawer beneath his desk, taking a hearty bite. Seeing this, Xu Duan finally couldn't help but ask, his eyes twitching slightly.
Is this week the dry bread?
Yes, that's right. Well, I've been keeping a close eye on Anlius the Alchemist lately; I suspect they have something big planned.
What about Ye Wumeng?
Li Xiang took a sip of water to alleviate the dryness from the bread and then smiled slightly.
He’s already on the right track; we just need to wait patiently until the time is right to bring him in so I can meet him.
After hearing Li Xiang's words, Xu Duan nodded, stood up to salute, and then quickly left.
Watching Xu Duan leave, Li Xiang finished the dry bread in his hand and looked out the window, murmuring to himself.
Hu Xu, oh Hu Xu, what kind of monster did you bring this time?
A monster? Yes! After they drank that potion, their bodies swelled up, and then they became monsters with Shihua.
Refugee Zone
In front of Ye Wumeng, an Old Refugee hunched over, rubbing his hands nervously while cautiously looking at Ye Wumeng, recounting everything in detail.
Well, it matches what the intelligence said; it seems they really didn’t deceive me.
So what you just said about finding Anlius to get the potion—what’s that about?
Ye Wumeng asked with her arms crossed, puzzled.
Uh, since I live close to the Alchemist's Shop, I basically have nothing to do every day but sit nearby and chat with others. Whenever there’s an Infected Person, we can usually see them looking for Anlius. Those Infected Persons always come in with crying faces and leave with smiles; isn’t that getting the potion?
Moreover, I’ve seen many times when they come out of the Alchemist's Shop, drink the potion, and turn into Undead. Where would ordinary refugees get such potions? There were even several times when it attracted the Bonfire Group!
The Old Refugee spoke passionately, vividly recounting what he had seen and heard, while Ye Wumeng already had an answer in her mind.
This Anlius is experimenting with potions!
But what exactly is he trying to do?
Thinking of this, Ye Wumeng shook her head; perhaps only after she goes underground beneath the Alchemist's Shop will she find the answers.
Meanwhile, a plan to divert Anlius had already formed in her mind.
But before that, she still needed some things.
