After spending a long time memorizing various documents, she began to feel a sense of coherence among them.
The weekend Sanda practice was intense; rather than running, it felt more like a leisurely stroll. At seven o'clock in Jiudu Park, there were few elderly people around—only those picking up their grandchildren or hurrying off to work, and not many morning joggers.
Without the responsibilities of being a secretary, Lin Xiao was left with nothing but time. After walking for a while, she found a quiet spot to stretch her legs while taking out important documents from last week's meeting notes to memorize.
Li Hao ran in Jiudu Park every morning for half an hour before heading to work. At just under thirty, he didn't want to let himself go. Having not gone out for socializing the night before, he woke up early and ran all the way to the far end of the park. In the distance, he spotted a girl who looked like a high school student stretching her legs while holding a piece of paper.
As Li Hao got closer, he realized it was Lin Xiao. Just as he was about to turn back, Lin Xiao noticed him and they locked eyes, both feeling somewhat awkward.
Lin Xiao quickly stood up straight and respectfully greeted him, "Good morning, Li County Chief."
For reasons he couldn't quite explain, Li Hao walked over and politely asked, "Do you often come out for a run?"
Lin Xiao wanted to end the conversation quickly, so she simply nodded, thinking how unlucky she was to run into him on her first day jogging.
Noticing that Lin Xiao was holding government stationery covered in dense text, Li Hao asked what document it was. Lin Xiao hesitated to show him the paper but couldn’t find an excuse not to hand it over.
Li Hao took the document from her hands; it was an implementation opinion issued by the Provincial Government regarding accelerating urban infrastructure construction. Lin Xiao's notes weren't the official document but rather outlined several key aspects related to Yurou County's priorities.
She had extracted the main headings from the Provincial Government's document and listed the corresponding implementation requirements related to Yurou County's key projects. This way, it was clear how Yurou County's major initiatives aligned with the Provincial Government's expectations.
"Did you organize this yourself?" Li Hao asked after reading through it without returning the two pages to her; instead, he folded them and kept them in his hand.
Lin Xiao nodded slightly, waiting for him to give her back the paper.
"Why not just mark it directly on the document?" Li Hao continued.
Lin Xiao glanced at the time; she was going to be late for work and needed to change clothes. She didn't want to engage in small talk with him.
"The document is confidential and can't be taken out. I just summarized it briefly so I can memorize it when I have time. That way, when my superiors ask about it, I can quickly find the information and extract what I need for writing materials."
Li Hao suddenly understood; it wasn't that she had an exceptional memory but that she put in more effort than others—had she memorized phone numbers too?
"Yes, I've memorized all the phone numbers of personnel at or above county-level across the entire county," Lin Xiao replied without thinking it was something worth boasting about or anything shameful.
Li Hao nodded, indicating that he understood, and then walked away.
Lin Xiao watched him take her paper and wanted to ask for it back, but ultimately lacked the courage. After all, it contained her handwritten notes. Fortunately, she had memorized most of it.
On his way back, Li Hao reflected on himself. After working for so long, his perspective had indeed narrowed, and his stereotypes about women had deepened. His senior sister, Zhao Hua, was an outstanding female leader, and his mother was also an excellent teacher.
Looking back now, he realized that it was unfair to Lin Xiao. Behind her seemingly effortless approach to work lay an effort that others were unaware of.
