Li Hao was responsible for all the work of the County Government, and his frequency of face-to-face communication and reporting to the provincial and municipal higher-ups was much higher than that of Hua Jie. In the three months prior to this, he had never had to accompany anyone for such tasks.
After returning to his position, his scope of work had significantly expanded. This time, Li Hao reported on the construction planning ideas for the Xiangtong Pipeline Network in Yurou County to the Provincial Government. When Li Hao and Executive Deputy County Head Hu Yuan were reporting to the Vice Governor, Lin Xiao and the Director of the Xitong Bureau were waiting in the car.
The Director of the Xitong Bureau was a man in his fifties, a native of Yu Rao Ren, with dark skin and a strong local accent when speaking Mandarin.
"Director Lin, it must not have been easy following Li County Chief," he remarked.
Lin Xiao smiled, knowing why he said that; the Director of the Xitong Bureau had been working hard for half a month preparing for this report.
"You've really been working hard lately. Just hang in there until this busy period is over," Lin Xiao replied, intentionally avoiding his comment. She thought about how any complaints about their hardships could easily reach their leaders' ears.
Perhaps the Vice Governor was very busy; within half an hour, Li Hao and Hu Yuan came down from the building.
"Xiao Lin, do you think it went well?" The Director of the Xitong Bureau asked out of boredom.
Lin Xiao watched as the two men emerged from the building with quick steps; Li Hao’s brisk pace indicated success, and she felt a wave of relief wash over her.
"It has to have gone well; you played an indispensable role," Lin Xiao said cheerfully, her words slipping out as her mood lightened.
The Director of the Xitong Bureau was affected by Lin Xiao's smile and thought to himself that as he approached retirement, being able to accomplish such a significant task was truly commendable and would leave a legacy for future generations.
After finishing their business, Hu Yuan and the Director of the Xitong Bureau headed straight back to Yurou County in one car. Coincidentally, it was Friday afternoon, and having not returned home for a long time, Li Hao decided to stay in the provincial city for the weekend. The driver, Xiao Wang, first took him home before returning with Lin Xiao to Yu Rao.
The car drove directly into the parking garage of Li Hao's residential complex, which was as large as a shopping mall's parking lot with shiny green floors reflecting light.
Xiao Wang navigated through turns until they reached Li Hao's apartment building. After greeting the county chief, they left the garage without lingering.
Lin Xiao searched for second-hand housing information in this community on her phone and was surprised to find that it was right next to the Provincial Committee; a unit here was worth millions.
Although she wasn't very familiar with luxury brands, she could tell that Li Hao wore high-quality clothing. A fleeting sense of melancholy crossed her mind—perhaps it was jealousy or envy; she couldn't quite identify this passing emotion.
Both Xiao Wang and Lin Xiao were not talkative people, so they returned to Yu Rao in silence. With their leader absent from Yu Rao, Lin Xiao found herself with more leisure time and continued practicing Sanda, still enduring painful defeats.
Life continued its busy cycle.
In Lin Xiao's life, there was only one thing: work, and only one person: Li Hao.
