Lin Xiao's mind was a chaotic blur, her tongue slightly sore from his kisses. The taste of tobacco lingered in his mouth, making her feel uncomfortable, but overall, she was happy for him.
"You really care for him," she remarked. Li Hao had always been quite independent, with a rather distant relationship with his parents. He had never experienced such selfless devotion to another person and couldn't fully understand it.
"He's my brother," Lin Xiao replied naturally. "It's normal for you not to understand since you're an only child."
Li Hao smiled and embraced her, choosing not to delve deeper into the topic.
Feeling a bit uncomfortable in his embrace, Lin Xiao sat up and fished a small box out of her pocket, handing it to him. "This is a gift for you, to show my gratitude."
Li Hao thought to himself that Lin Xiao knew who he was, but it wasn't something she had chosen herself. Still, receiving a gift was a joyful occasion. He opened the box to find a branded lighter inside.
"I noticed you were always looking for a lighter when you smoked," Lin Xiao explained nervously. She felt that the gift wasn't extravagant enough and wondered if he would like it.
While shopping in the mall earlier, she thought about meeting Li Hao that evening. She felt proud that the ten thousand yuan could be secured thanks to her efforts, but she couldn't bring herself to spend too much on a gift. This lighter was already quite painful for her wallet.
Li Hao took the lighter from the box and flicked it open; the flame burst forth brightly. Naturally, he liked it since it was from his girlfriend.
Lin Xiao felt a bit embarrassed by his teasing.
The next day, Lin Xiao had to go to work. That evening, Li Hao didn't keep her over; they had dinner outside before he took her home.
"Stay at my place this weekend while attending classes at Xiang University," Li Hao said as he handed her the access card for his apartment complex. "Keep this with you. If you forget it, just ask the property management to let you in and enter the code yourself."
Lin Xiao didn't want to accept it but couldn't find a reason to refuse, so she took it without thinking about staying over.
Once they arrived at his place, Li Hao pulled her in for another kiss.
He thought that Lin Xiao's talent extended beyond work; she was also quite good at kissing. During their first kiss, she struggled with breathing; during the second one, although still somewhat awkward, at least she was learning how to breathe properly—though she seemed distracted. He made a mental note to teach her when they met again.
In the coming months, the Organization Department planned to conduct in-depth investigations at the grassroots level. Each department-level cadre was required to submit a high-quality research report. While it was said that department-level cadres were conducting research, it mainly involved the Director selecting topics for them to implement.
Lin Xiao chose "Research on Issues in Grassroots Organization Construction in Remote Areas." Director Yu Lewei commented that while the topic was good, it was too broad and would end up being unclear and vague; they should focus more specifically. After some discussion within the department, they decided to select Yurou County as a typical case study.
Recently, Li Hao had hosted several delegations from the Provincial Government for research purposes. He wasn't sure whether to feel proud or embarrassed about it. Today, Luo Qianwei handed him several official letters—they were here for another round of inspections.
To his surprise, Lin Xiao's name appeared in one of the letters from the Organization Department regarding their visit; she hadn't even informed him beforehand.
Li Hao thought about how they hadn't seen each other in nearly a month—except for two occasions when he had drunk too much and reached out to her. Other than that, their communication consisted of bland text messages exchanged occasionally.
Lin Xiao's group drove from the provincial capital to Yurou County after finishing work that morning. Deputy Director Xiao Tian complained about how the hour-long car ride nearly broke his back.
Upon arriving at Yu Rao, they checked into Hengli Grand Hotel directly. The official letter stated they were expected on a specific date; however, they arrived earlier than anticipated and were greeted by Li Hao at the entrance.
Xiao Tian was taken aback, and Lin Xiao was equally surprised. Their research team was not of a high enough rank to be received by Li Hao.
