Li Hao hesitated, wondering whether to help her, fearing she might resent him. But seeing her in such a pitiful state, he couldn’t help but offer his assistance. “If you don’t want to, I won’t force you. No need to be nervous,” he said gently.
Lin Xiao opened her mouth, wanting to say it wasn’t his concern, but she struggled to find the words. She thought she had forgotten the past, only to realize it was buried deep in her memory. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to,” she murmured, unable to meet Li Hao’s gaze.
“Let’s head back; you have work tomorrow,” Li Hao said, still holding her hand as they walked toward the car. “Can you drive?”
Lin Xiao nodded, though she was unsure of what she was saying.
On the way back, neither of them spoke. Lin Xiao drove Li Hao to the entrance of the community before returning to the hotel.
Lin Xiao and Xiao Tian had spent a week in Yurou County. After Li Hao’s reception on the first day, everything went smoothly with the cooperation of the team, and their work progressed well.
Xiao Tian frequently mentioned Secretary Li’s importance, making Lin Xiao’s ears ring with the repetition. Since that night, Li Hao hadn’t reached out to Lin Xiao; he hadn’t sent her any messages or even bothered to host them again.
Lin Xiao wondered if he was planning to break up with her. Should she return his card?
Tomorrow, Lin Xiao would be leaving Yurou County. At eight o'clock that evening, after finishing her work meal, she texted Li Hao to see if he wanted to meet.
Li Hao didn’t reply. By ten o'clock, still no response from him. It seemed he was indeed going to end things with her. A wave of inexplicable sadness washed over her as she sat alone in her room watching television, finding nothing appealing on any channel.
At ten-thirty, Lin Xiao’s phone rang—it was Li Hao. “Come out; I’m waiting for you in the underground garage.”
Startled, Lin Xiao jumped out of bed and rummaged through her suitcase for clothes, quickly changing before grabbing her phone and rushing out.
She didn’t even realize how eager she was to meet him.
Li Hao was still under the influence of alcohol when he sat in the passenger seat while Lin Xiao obediently took the driver’s seat.
From her pocket, Lin Xiao pulled out some Hangover Pills and handed them to him. “Next time, drink less.”
Li Hao accepted the pills and swallowed them down as Lin Xiao offered him her thermos.
That night when they had gone out together, he had been thirsty, and she had gone out of her way to buy him water from a convenience store.
He took a few sips from the cup and thought that even if she was someone else’s assistant, she would still treat others this well.
It seems I have caused her some trouble after all.
Li Hao adjusted the back seat of the passenger side, leaning back slightly. "Lin Xiao, let's break up."
Lin Xiao softly responded with a faint "mm," blinking her eyes vigorously as tears streamed down her cheeks, thankfully hidden by the dusk.
Given what he knew of her, this response was expected. Li Hao had never been one to seek out trouble; when he made a decision, he did so decisively. In this relationship, her feelings had never truly mattered; the decision to be together or apart was never hers to make. She could only be grateful that she could completely withdraw from it all.
Lin Xiao drove back to Li Hao's neighborhood, dropping him off at his home. "Li Secretary, I'll park the car in the same spot as before and leave the keys at the front desk. Please have someone pick them up tomorrow."
Li Hao felt a surge of anger at how quickly she shifted roles. He had thought that if she begged him not to break up, they might give it another try.
Without saying a word, he opened the car door and stepped out, slamming it shut with a loud bang.
Lin Xiao let out a long sigh of relief as she drove home, tears flowing uncontrollably as she wiped her eyes with her sleeve. She hadn't expected to feel this way; yet, with something in her eye, she couldn't help but cry.
After this experience, Lin Xiao had given up on dating altogether. Li Hao was actually quite good; it was just that she felt inadequate.
The next day, when Li Hao used the car, he discovered that Lin Xiao had left several boxes of Hangover Pills inside.
A few days later, Li Hao received a registered letter, personally handed to him by Luo Qianwei. He tore open the envelope and a key card fell out.
