One day, Li Hao woke up to find Lin Xiao still asleep. Her complexion had improved, but she seemed restless in her sleep. He went downstairs to grab breakfast, and Meng Kai handed him the prepared meal. Li Hao took the breakfast back upstairs.
"Is there someone at Li Secretary's house?" Xiao Wang asked in surprise, noticing that the breakfast was clearly more than enough for one person. Xiao Wang had been driving for Li Hao since he became the county mayor, and in all these years, he had never seen anyone else at his home.
Meng Kai opened his mouth as if to say something, thinking about how obvious it was during Lin Ren's time, but he held back. He couldn't say anything or ask questions.
Li Hao placed the breakfast on the table and peeked into the room to see Lin Xiao still asleep before quietly leaving the house. The day marked the traditional Dragon Boat Festival activities in Yurou County, where over a dozen dragon boats were ready at the shore, with a sea of people gathered.
After Li Hao conducted an opening ceremony with the county leaders and announced the start of the races, the traditional festival activities kicked off in full swing. The Police Chief was particularly observant of Li Hao; he noticed that Li Secretary's mood was noticeably different from usual, though he was aware of the underlying reasons.
The head of the An Bureau hadn't yet retracted his gaze when he caught Li Hao looking at him, causing him to hurriedly turn away.
By ten o'clock, when Li Hao returned home, he found a spread of stewed chicken soup, stir-fried lotus root, braised fish, and boiled shrimp on the dining table. The pent-up frustration from last night exploded within him like a match striking fire. He felt pained for her but was also irritated by her willingness to endure so much.
"Lin Xiao, sit down. We need to talk," Li Hao said, making an effort to control his anger.
"How about we eat first?" Lin Xiao suggested, noticing Li Hao's grim expression and thinking he might still be recovering from his injuries while also feeling tired from the day.
"Lin Xiao, I said we need to talk. Do you understand what I'm saying?" Li Hao raised his voice slightly, adopting a serious demeanor as if addressing official business.
Lin Xiao felt intimidated by Li Hao's imposing presence and obediently sat on the sofa, sighing inwardly—was this leading to another breakup?
"How is your health?" Before Lin Xiao could respond, Li Hao continued, "You're doing okay, right?"
Lin Xiao nodded in response.
Li Hao could no longer contain his anger; what on earth did she intend to do?
Li Hao picked up Lin Xiao and strode to the bed, pretending to pull down her pants. Lin Xiao panicked this time and slapped his hand away.
"Don't move. I want to see how badly you're hurt," Li Hao said, looking at Lin Xiao, knowing she was unwilling.
In his heart, he thought, just say it. If you say it, I won't look.
"Then I'll take them off myself." Lin Xiao pulled the blanket over herself and began to quietly remove her pants under the covers.
She noticed that Li Hao had also taken off his outer clothes and was only wearing his underwear, which made her tremble a little. Did he still want her?
Li Hao did want to scare her; after all, she could endure it. He lifted the blanket to see the redness and swelling beneath her, which hadn't fully subsided yet. His heart ached with both pity and anger, but mostly with self-blame.
He gently touched her, and Lin Xiao could no longer hold back. With all her strength, she kicked him to the ground and curled up against the headboard, wrapped in the blanket, watching him warily.
In her panic, Lin Xiao calmed herself down, gradually regaining her awareness from the fear. She thought that this time with Li Hao was truly over. With the worst-case scenario in mind, she felt a newfound determination within her.
She had tried; she had put in the effort. She realized she couldn't establish a good romantic relationship with a man.
After losing control, Li Hao picked up his pants from the floor and put them on, stepping back two paces to distance himself from her.
He watched her as she appeared terrified and helpless but gradually began to calm down.
After a long silence, they spoke at the same time.
"You go ahead," Li Hao said irritably as he lit a cigarette.
"I'm going back to the provincial city this afternoon," Lin Xiao replied softly, waiting for Li Hao to leave so she could get dressed.
Li Hao laughed in anger; was this all she could think about? Was she acting like an ostrich?
"And then? Are you going to return my access card?" Li Hao opened the window to let the smoke escape.
