The phone rang, waking Lin Xiao from her sleep on the bed. Groggy, she reached for her phone and answered it.
"Are you not keeping watch?" Li Hao's voice came through, sounding as if he could tell she was still half-asleep.
Lin Xiao realized she had dozed off for two hours; it was already past midnight, and the sound of firecrackers echoed outside.
"I miss you," Li Hao said. Perhaps it was because she had felt wronged all night, but hearing his voice brought her warmth, and she suppressed her feelings of grievance.
"I miss you too." Li Hao felt a warmth in his heart; this was the first time she had openly confessed her feelings to him. "Come back early on the third."
"Are you coming back on the third?" Lin Xiao asked, knowing that Li Hao hadn't returned in a long time.
Li Hao replied that he would be in Yurou County by the sixth and planned to return to Xiang Tian on the fifth to accompany Lin Xiao.
Tonight's confession meant that Li Hao couldn't wait until the fifth. He knew Lin Xiao would be on duty on the fourth, so she would definitely return on the third.
Hearing Li Hao's promise lifted Lin Xiao's spirits. Her mother had her own struggles and understanding, and all Lin Xiao could do was try her best to be a good daughter.
In the following days, everyone intentionally avoided mentioning the events of New Year's Eve. Lin Qi continued to prepare many spicy dishes and made sure to include Lin Xiao's favorites.
On the morning of the third, as Lin Xiao prepared to leave, she looked at Lin Qi with a sense of reluctance, her heart softening.
Their director was also in her fifties but looked much younger than her mother. This year, Lin Qi's hair had turned noticeably grayer.
Lin Xiao escorted Lin Qi back to her own house. Unsure how to tell Lin Qi that she wouldn't be staying there that night, she remained silent.
Once home, they unloaded everything they had brought back from their hometown and began organizing it.
"Lin Xiao, sit down. I need to talk to you," Lin Qi said seriously.
Lin Xiao looked at Lin Qi's solemn expression and smiled nervously. "What orders do you want to give?"
Lin Qi stated that he had never been to Lin Xiao's house before and wouldn't go in the future either, urging her not to overthink it.
After defending his graduation thesis, he planned to head south; a startup company had promised him a technical position.
Lin Xiao had always known Lin Qi's intentions; he was never that kind of person. She thought about how they would graduate this year and could save money together to help him secure a mortgage for a place of his own.
She had never considered giving the house to him. The bond between the siblings was strong, and once they opened up, there were no hard feelings.
"Sister, are you going to see him tonight?" Lin Xiao asked. "I heard you on the phone earlier. Can I meet him?"
Lin Xiao didn't expect such a request and fell silent, feeling a bit troubled. Seeing Lin Xiao's expression, her heart sank. "Is it that you don't want me to meet him, or does he not want to see me?"
Lin Xiao didn't know how to explain this to her; his father was Li Boshan.
Lin Xiao's eyes widened in shock. "That one?"
He nodded.
There was no excitement in Lin Xiao, only a chill. They were from different worlds; she asked, "Do you think he would be willing to meet me? I just want to see what kind of person he is."
"Then I'll ask him tonight. What do you think?" Lin Xiao wondered what Li Hao thought; he had never mentioned wanting to meet her family.
