Lin Xiao ordered the dishes, half of which were tailored to her taste, while the other half catered to Li Hao's preferences. On top of what Lin Xiao had chosen, Li Hao added two of his favorite dishes and removed two others, as he was always frugal and believed in enjoying good food without waste.
Li Hao took out a bottle of wine and poured a jug for Lin Xiao. Being a student, he wasn't allowed to drink alcohol. Lin Xiao reached out and took the jug from him, chiding, "You should drink less too."
Taking the jug in her hands, she added, "I'm older than you." In front of Li Hao, Lin Xiao felt a bit shy about being too harsh, so she simply reminded both of them to drink moderately.
Lin Xiao rarely drank, and after just a couple of shots, she became more talkative. "Sister, do you remember when you were little? There was a boy named Xiao Pang who gave you a big rabbit candy. You kept it in your pocket all day, and when he came to play with you at night, you had already eaten it. The next day, when Xiao Pang came looking for you to play again, you didn't want to play with him because he asked for the Big Rabbit Candy back."
Lin Xiao felt a bit embarrassed; she hadn’t returned the candy and had no choice but to play with Xiao Pang after school the next day. That boy had followed her for an entire semester, often bringing her little treats with his dirty hands. She had taken that candy because she saw Lin Xiao staring at him while he enjoyed his Big Rabbit Candy.
Lin Xiao shared some amusing stories from her past that she had never told Li Hao before, just as he had never spoken about his own history. They only shared their present moments together, disregarding the past and not questioning the future.
"Has Lin Xiao ever told you these things?" Lin Xiao asked casually. She was surprised by her own words; she could have called him Brother Li or Li Hao, but it seemed he hadn't been listening.
Li Hao probably understood why she brought this up. "You were quite interesting as a child," he said. "You should share more stories with me when you have time; I enjoy listening."
Lin Xiao felt a bit awkward; it all felt like a scene from a television drama. "Sister, I've had too much to drink. Can you go buy me a bottle of chilled mineral water?" She patted her head.
Lin Xiao quickly got up. Li Hao suggested he would take care of the bill so they could leave soon. He noticed that Lin Xiao seemed to have something important to say to him; it appeared this meal was more than just casual dining.
"Your sister has left; if there's something on your mind, go ahead," Li Hao said directly without beating around the bush. His patience seemed to extend particularly towards Lin Xiao.
"Lin Xiao mentioned your situation," she began cautiously. "I mean, if in the future you find someone more suitable for you than her, please let her go gently. You know she's not the type to cling on stubbornly; don't hurt her."
Lin Xiao looked into Li Hao's eyes, sincerity mixed with a hint of pleading evident in her gaze.
Li Hao listened to Lin Xiao tell a story, thinking it was meant to encourage him to treat her well, but the real crux of the matter lay elsewhere. The siblings from the Lin family truly had a sense of self-awareness.
Seeing Li Hao's displeased expression, Lin Xiao's tone shifted to one of greater pleading. "I’ll be heading south for my thesis defense. I want her to live for herself this time. I can see that she genuinely likes you, so please cherish her. If you no longer have feelings for her, tell her early so that you don't hold her back."
Lin Xiao wanted to convey to Li Hao that she wasn't someone who easily fell for others; if she loved, it would be etched deeply within her. However, she couldn't say it. She didn't want Li Hao to rely on Lin Xiao's affection for him in the future and trample on her dignity.
After paying the bill, they were already waiting for her. Lin Xiao first dropped her off at home before heading back with Li Hao.
That night, as they lay down to sleep, Li Hao turned to Lin Xiao and said, "You have a good brother."
