Li Hao hung up the phone, realizing that Bai Xue must have reached out to Lin Xiao. Bai Xue was just like that; she would come forward, so he never expected her to hide such a significant matter.
Last week, Bai Xue had already returned to the headquarters to report on her findings. Li Hao wouldn’t call Bai Xue to ask about the situation, especially since she was enduring her illness alone for his sake. When he decided to be with Lin Xiao, he resolved that for the rest of his life, aside from love, he would do everything in his power to treat Bai Xue well.
Arriving at Lido Water View, Li Hao couldn’t help but smile bitterly at the thought of Lin Xiao. With her personality, how could she possibly keep something like this to herself?
By the time Lin Xiao got home from school, it was already late. In the car, Li Hao watched as Lin Xiao approached from a distance. She had always been slender, but now she looked even thinner, dragging her backpack along and appearing listless—she looked like a high school student from afar.
“Lin Xiao!” Li Hao called out as she reached the entrance of the building. She glanced at him but ignored him, opening the door and continuing upstairs.
“Lin Xiao, you’re such a coward! You just hide when things get tough!” Li Hao felt anger rising within him.
Lin Xiao looked at Li Hao in disbelief. How could he, someone who had made mistakes, curse at her? She never expected him to use such foul language.
Li Hao stepped in front of Lin Xiao, suppressing his earlier anger and speaking softly. “What Bai Xue said—that’s all part of my past with her. I can’t change anything about it, and I don’t think I did anything wrong. If you want to know, you can ask me directly instead of shutting me out and torturing yourself.”
“Weren’t you two together during this time?” Lin Xiao replied coldly.
Seeing Lin Xiao’s exhausted demeanor, Li Hao asked gently, “Can we talk slowly? You’ve had a long day at school.”
Lin Xiao felt utterly drained and understood Li Hao’s nature well enough not to want to draw attention from neighbors by arguing with him in the hallway. She climbed the stairs slowly with her backpack, pausing to catch her breath on each landing.
Li Hao watched her with concern and reached out to help carry her backpack, but she shrugged him off.
He followed closely behind her, genuinely worried that she might stumble.
This was Li Hao’s second visit to Lin Xiao’s home; everything was still the same. The only difference was that there was a bottle of alcohol on the dining table—most of it had already been consumed—and beside it lay a small glass along with a bottle of melatonin.
“Lin Xiao, did you drink this?” Li Hao asked as he looked at the items on the table, feeling both heartbroken and guilty.
Seeing that Lin Xiao wasn’t responding to him, he began recounting his encounter with Bai Xue and her situation. “I swear nothing happened between us.”
After meeting her, you didn't contact me or say anything, because you hesitated, right? Lin Xiao thought of Li Hao, who was the kind of person with a fastidious attitude towards relationships. If he was with Bai Xue, there would be no need for him to seek her out again.
Li Hao forgot how well Lin Xiao understood him. Lin Xiao felt that Bai Xue's situation had come too suddenly; he was human too, and he needed time to think.
In fact, today Lin Xiao felt a weight lifted off his chest. At least he hadn’t been cheated on; he had always known that their relationship wouldn’t last long. Hearing these words today made him feel much better; at least Li Hao respected their feelings and provided an explanation. However, he realized he couldn’t be with him anymore. Recently, Lin Xiao had been feeling anxious and breathless, and after such a long speech, he had to pause several times, making Li Hao look tense.
“Why?” Li Hao asked, somewhat confused.
“Have you seen My Fair Princess?” Lin Xiao asked. Li Hao didn’t understand why Lin Xiao brought this up and shook his head; he didn’t watch that kind of Qiong Yao drama.
Zi Wei said to Er Kang: “She said you two watched the snow, the stars, and the moon together, discussing poetry and philosophy of life. I never got to experience watching the snow, the stars, and the moon with you or discussing poetry and philosophy of life.”
Li Hao hadn’t expected that in this situation, Lin Xiao would mimic the tone of a Qiong Yao drama while saying this.
“Li Hao, I mind your past with her. I mind your hesitation when she appeared. I mind that your affection for her isn’t as deep as my love for you.” Lin Xiao had never been so composed in revealing his feelings at that moment.
Li Hao wanted to deny it, but what could he deny? Deny his past with Bai Xue? Deny his hesitation? Or deny that she didn’t love him as much?
At that moment, he took the wine and medicine from her table and said softly, “Take care of yourself.”
