Lin Xiao was so busy with work that she didn’t want to think about anything at all, but in the quiet moments of midnight, she could feel his caresses in her dreams. With the arrival of the May Day and National Day holidays, Lin Xiao took a trip to Mount Tai to watch the sunrise, had a timeless rendezvous with Confucius in Qufu, and gazed at the sea of clouds in Huang Shan. She spent an entire afternoon by the Broken Bridge at West Lake, watching couples flirt and children run freely, as the distant Leifeng Pagoda gradually faded into darkness under the sunlight.
Often alone, tears would stream down her face; it felt as if the bustling world had nothing to do with her. Lin Xiao knew she hadn’t yet moved on from the shadow of love, but what could she do? Li Youyou said that the fastest way to move on was to start anew. Lin Xiao decided to give it a try and agreed to go on a first date with Wang Lei.
At Wu San Diner, Wang Lei handed Lin Xiao a pair of disposable chopsticks and asked if she was accustomed to this place. Seeing her nod, he chuckled and said, “Do you know why I brought you here?” When Lin Xiao shook her head, he laughed again, “You look just like someone I’m interrogating.”
Feeling a bit embarrassed by his comment, Lin Xiao hadn’t been to a diner like Wu San in many years. She asked readily, “Why did you bring me here?”
“I think you’re perfect for letting loose here,” Wang Lei replied. Noticing her puzzled expression, he added, “You should be a lively person; you just hold yourself back too much. Can you drink?”
Lin Xiao’s face showed some wariness.
“Lin Xiao, I’m a police officer; I won’t break the law,” Wang Lei said with a hearty laugh that put her at ease. “Drink as much as you want; there’s no pressure.”
Not knowing Lin Xiao’s taste preferences, Wang Lei ordered a plate of garlic sauce, a plate of thirteen spices, and a plate of tomatoes, along with some snacks for drinking. Lin Xiao ordered a bottle of beer; one bottle wouldn’t be enough to get her drunk.
“Wang Lei, I used to live with my boyfriend. Do you mind?” Lin Xiao didn’t have much experience with blind dates and felt this was significant information to share. Perhaps it was because Wang Lei was a police officer that she felt she could trust him.
Wang Lei paused for a moment while peeling the lobster, then smiled. "Lin Xiao, why do you ask that? Would it bother you if I had lived with someone else before?"
Lin Xiao nodded, her flushed face appearing particularly charming under the lights.
"Wang Lei, that's a bit unfair, isn't it? You can do as you please, but I can't even ask?" he laughed heartily.
"But don’t worry, I haven’t. I had a girlfriend in college for two years, but we broke up after graduation. Then I dated someone else for a few times, but she thought I was too busy and ended it."
"Why wouldn’t you mind?" Lin Xiao asked, somewhat puzzled.
Wang Lei noticed that Lin Xiao wasn't really asking if he minded her past; rather, she was concerned about her own. "Lin Xiao, do you know why people's eyes are positioned at the front of their heads? It's so we can look forward. I've dealt with many criminal cases and learned to cherish the people in front of me."
Lin Xiao found Wang Lei's reasoning convincing.
Their first date went very well. Wang Lei was someone who could control the rhythm of their conversation; he never let it fall flat nor did he come on too strong.
Their second date was scheduled for the weekend a week later. Wang Lei waited for Lin Xiao to finish her classes at Xiangtian University, and this time they chose a quiet bar.
