Lin Xiao was startled to discover that Professor Sun and Li Boshan had a strained relationship; their earlier meeting had been quite cold. In the end, it was Li Grandpa who went upstairs, and after some unknown conversation, the sounds of arguing gradually subsided.
A while later, all three of them came downstairs. Li Grandpa maintained his serious demeanor, while Li Boshan's face was filled with anger, and Li Hao looked pale. Sitting on the sofa, Lin Xiao watched the three of them come down, unsure whether to stand up or remain seated. After a brief internal struggle, she chose to stay quietly where she was.
During dinner, the situation worsened. Aside from Li Grandma inviting everyone to eat, the three men remained silent, and Professor Sun was also uncharacteristically quiet. Lin Xiao felt as if she were choking on her food; despite the abundance of dishes on the table, she only took a few pieces from in front of her and occasionally accepted some dishes that Li Hao offered her from across the table.
After dinner, the aunt began clearing the table. Lin Xiao obediently sat back down on the sofa while everyone else settled in as well, reading books and newspapers. After washing his hands, Li Hao approached them and said, "Mom, Lin Xiao, I've booked a hotel for us."
Lin Xiao remained still; earlier in the afternoon, Li Grandma had asked the aunt to prepare the guest rooms.
"Li Hao, are you really going to abandon your grandparents?" Li Boshan erupted angrily.
Li Hao ignored him and turned to his grandparents. "Grandpa, Grandma, I’m sorry for today. I’ll come to visit you more often."
Li Grandpa said nothing while Li Grandma came over and took Li Hao's hand. "Hao'er, why don’t you and your wife stay with us tonight? The room is all ready."
Li Hao glared at Lin Xiao, prompting her to quickly stand up and move beside him.
"Lin Xiao, please persuade Hao'er to stay tonight and keep us company. It’s been so busy lately that you both haven’t come to see us," Li Grandma's words were heart-wrenching.
Lin Xiao looked at Li Hao but didn’t speak; she simply held his hand. His family dynamics were too complicated for her to engage with Professor Sun or say anything to Li Grandpa.
She feared that speaking out might upset Li Hao even more. He felt both anger and resentment towards Li Boshan but had no choice but to share a room with him.
"You should stay out tonight," Li Grandpa suddenly said in a moment of silence.
"Dad!" Li Boshan exclaimed incredulously.
"I won’t say it again; show some respect in front of your granddaughter-in-law," Li Grandpa maintained his serious expression.
Li Boshan trembled with rage as he grabbed his coat and stormed out.
That night, Li Hao held Lin Xiao close. She could sense that he was feeling quite downcast.
"Is there something wrong between Aunt and Uncle?" Lin Xiao couldn't help but ask.
"Lin Xiao, our family's situation is quite complicated. It's hard to explain in just a few words. You don't need to worry about it," Li Hao said, holding her close, his tone filled with helplessness.
Lin Xiao understood; these matters had nothing to do with her. Even if she knew, it wouldn't change anything for her, and she would still have to keep it a secret.
She turned to face him, gently stroking his furrowed brow in an attempt to smooth it out. "Just sleep," she whispered.
Li Hao held Lin Xiao tightly, feeling grateful to have her by his side.
