Lin Xiao felt exhausted and lay down on the bed to rest. Li Hao couldn't even get close to the door; Lin Xiao complained that he smelled too strong. He had just had his teeth cleaned at the dental hospital and took a shower when he got back, but his skin was almost rubbed raw from scrubbing so much, yet he still moved closer to Lin Xiao. Once again, Lin Xiao started to vomit uncontrollably. In the end, both of them resigned themselves to the situation—Li Hao was just too smelly.
A week later, Li Hao was set to take up his new position. Watching Lin Xiao vomit like that every morning and evening made him regret the timing of her pregnancy.
At the Xiangtian University staff dormitory, Professor Sun looked at Li Hao, trying to mask her inner unease. "Have you made up your mind?"
"I have," Li Hao replied. "This isn't just for my father's revenge; it's for the greater good. I know some people are rotten to the core. If I don't step up, I not only let down my father but also my grandfather and those who fought all their lives."
Li Hao had long wanted to do this; he was just biding his time, waiting for the right moment to strike. However, Li Boshan's death accelerated his decision.
"If you've made up your mind, then go ahead," Professor Sun said, her trembling voice betraying her fear.
"Mom, you should move in with Lin Xiao," Li Hao suggested. "Once this starts, who knows what actions these people will take? You two can look out for each other." He was now more worried about Lin Xiao's situation.
Professor Sun initially wanted to say she wasn't afraid, but seeing Li Hao's serious expression made her realize that the future would be fraught with bloodshed. Plus, with her daughter-in-law pregnant, it was better for them to be together.
Lin Xiao had no idea that Li Hao would bring home a nanny, let alone that she would be so light and look like a soldier rather than a typical caregiver.
"Lin Xiao, this is Wang Mei. She'll be responsible for picking you up and dropping you off from work and cooking for you," Li Hao introduced her from a distance.
"Nice to meet you, Sister Wang. Thank you for your help in advance," Lin Xiao greeted weakly.
"You're too polite, Young Madam," Wang Mei said respectfully with a bow.
Lin Xiao couldn't help but chuckle at being called "Young Madam." "Just call me by my name, Sister Wang."
Wang Mei looked at Li Hao for confirmation, and he nodded in response.
The next day, Li Hao left. Lin Xiao felt downcast thinking about how long it would be before he returned but knew she couldn't get too close. After taking a shower with fresh water for the second time, Li Hao kept a distance from Lin Xiao as he laid out a mat on the floor beside her bed.
"Take care of yourself while I'm gone. If anything happens, call me," he said.
Lin Xiao had never realized how talkative Li Hao could be. He had repeated himself so many times; couldn't he say something else? It was driving her crazy.
Li Hao noticed that Lin Xiao's temper had been particularly bad since she got pregnant. It seemed she was genuinely uncomfortable. "Honey, how about I give you a hug?" he suggested.
Lin Xiao wanted nothing more than to be held by Li Hao, but she couldn't. Frustrated, she sat up and cried, "What should I do? What if I throw up?"
"Why not try wearing a mask?" Li Hao proposed with good intentions.
With the mask on, Lin Xiao lay in Li Hao's arms. His embrace felt so warm, and her mood improved significantly.
Worried that Lin Xiao might react to his scent again, Li Hao put on a mask as well. He didn't dare breathe too loudly until Lin Xiao's breathing gradually stabilized. Only then did he help her remove her mask while keeping his own on and fell asleep for the night.
Before dawn, Li Hao got up. When he reached the living room, Wang Mei was already in the kitchen making breakfast.
"Sister Wang, thank you," Li Hao said as he walked over to greet her. "I really appreciate you taking care of Lin Xiao and my mom."
Wang Mei was a caretaker for Li Laoyezi. Usually, Li Laoyezi preferred to do things himself and rarely troubled Wang Mei. If it weren't for the special circumstances, he wouldn't have asked her to come over to look after Lin Xiao.
Lin Xiao finally got up and rushed to the bathroom to throw up before she emerged from the room.
Professor Sun had already left for work; it was half-past eight when classes began.
