"What happened at work today?" Li Hao gently cupped her chin, urging her to look at him.
Lin Xiao recounted the details of her temporary assignment.
"Do you want to go?" Li Hao understood the benefits of such an assignment; a temporary position could lead to becoming the Town Chief. The Town Chief was closest to the people, dealing with a diverse array of individuals, each with varying qualities, which truly tested one's character.
Li Hao knew Lin Xiao was exceptional, but he worried that her temperament might not be assertive enough to handle the public effectively.
"If I want to go, would you agree?" Lin Xiao asked cautiously.
Deep down, Lin Xiao still felt the weight of traditional beliefs; she had a husband and young children to consider.
Seeing the eager look in her eyes, Li Hao pulled her into his embrace. "If you want to go, then go. I’ll bring Tian Tian along to keep you company. We won’t interfere."
"Really?" Lin Xiao was surprised by how readily he agreed. She had expected him to weigh the pros and cons or suggest that she might not be suitable for the role.
In truth, Li Hao shared her concerns but ultimately thought that allowing Lin Xiao to pursue what she wanted was worth any risks involved.
The next day, when Lin Xiao went to submit her application, Huang from the Human Resources Department specifically called out to her.
"Lin Xiao, are you sure you want to do this?" Huang knew about her relationship with Li Hao and thought that in a few years, there would surely be a position for Lin Xiao as Deputy Director.
Lin Xiao nodded in response.
"Does Li Hao know?" Huang recalled that Li Hao had resigned and felt it inappropriate to refer to him as Hall Master now.
"He respects my decision," Lin Xiao replied.
Huang didn’t press further. Each year, a certain percentage of those assigned had to be women, and with most candidates from other departments being male, Lin Xiao still had an advantage in being selected.
Meanwhile, Li Hao was enjoying tea with others.
"You left so cleanly while we old bones are left here to toil away," an elderly man in a Zhongshan suit said as he set down his teacup and took a watering can out into the yard to tend to the flowers.
"Min Shu, you know I treat everyone well," Li Hao remarked, gazing at the flourishing flowerbeds. He pondered whether he should buy a house with a yard so he could also cultivate some flowers.
"Does your wife still let her work?"
