On the day of the meeting, the Provincial Organization Department convened a mobilization conference. Deputy Minister Lu delivered a standard speech, urging the young cadres to focus on their positions and serve the people wholeheartedly while strictly adhering to work ethics and integrity.
In Xiangtian Province, there are several prefecture-level cities, each with its own townships. This time, a number of officials at the departmental level were dispatched.
After the meeting, Lin Xiao intended to find Huang, who had mentioned he would personally accompany Lin Xiao to his new post. As soon as he stepped out of the conference room, he saw Wang Lei standing at the door, looking somewhat awkwardly at Lin Xiao.
Lin Xiao had just seen Wang Lei's name on the list of officials assigned to new positions, so he was not surprised to see him now. After Lin Xiao greeted him politely, Wang Lei opened his mouth but then hesitated, unsure of what to say next. He recalled their time together drinking at Wu San Diner; it felt like a lifetime ago despite only being a little over a year.
"I'm also from Yurou County this time," Wang Lei said, starting to apologize but then changing his mind.
"Well, I need to get going. When will you leave?" Lin Xiao indicated with his notebook that he was ready to depart.
"See you in Yu Rao," Wang Lei replied with a hint of regret. Even if they couldn't be lovers, being friends was still good. It seemed that his previous inquiry about her feelings had not only lingered in his mind but also mattered to Lin Xiao.
At the Yuriao County Government Building, Lin Xiao returned to this place with a sense of familiar strangeness. The current county head, Chen Rui, personally welcomed Huang and treated Lin Xiao with exceptional courtesy; anyone unaware would think Lin Xiao was Chen Rui's superior.
That evening, Chen Rui arranged a banquet at Cui Ping Grand Hotel. Luo Qianwei had now become the director of the finance bureau, and Li Hongxin had been promoted to Secretary of Gengxu Town. The dinner went well, and Lin Xiao abstained from alcohol.
When he had served as Li Hao's secretary before, he had shielded him from many drinks. Now that he was back in familiar territory and needed to start working again, avoiding it would be impossible.
That night, Lin Xiao stayed at Cui Ping Grand Hotel. After dinner, when Li Hongxin handed him the room key, he whispered that Secretary Li was waiting for him upstairs.
Lin Xiao looked at Li Hongxin in surprise. Li Hongxin smiled broadly, his face crinkling with laughter; he had known about this since earlier that afternoon.
Lin Xiao held the elevator card as she descended from the suite downstairs. When she swiped the card to enter, Li Hao was sitting at the computer in the outer room, and the lights inside had been dimmed.
As Lin Xiao entered, she noticed Tian Tian was already asleep, so she tiptoed back out.
"Why did you come over today? Where's Sister Wang?"
The two had agreed that Li Hao would come to keep her company. She hadn’t expected him to arrive tonight.
"Have you been drinking?" Li Hao caught a whiff of alcohol on Lin Xiao, her face flushed.
"Yeah." Lin Xiao leaned in closer and whispered to Li Hao, unable to resist laughing at his handsome face. Remembering that their child was still asleep, she quickly covered her mouth with her hand.
Li Hao sighed inwardly; she must have had quite a bit to drink. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her onto his lap, her fair skin glowing like peach blossoms.
He playfully rubbed his stubble against Lin Xiao's neck, applying just the right amount of pressure, causing her breathing to quicken.
Lin Xiao felt torn between wanting to escape and cherishing this intimacy.
"Let’s take a bath. I knew you were coming up, so I prepared the water for you," Li Hao said as he continued to tease her neck.
"I want to give you an award: National Excellent Husband." The tipsy Lin Xiao hugged Li Hao's head, leaning back slightly.
"Then remember to give me a big prize later," Li Hao chuckled, amused by the little drunkard.
With that, he swept Lin Xiao into his arms and carried her into the bathroom.
At that moment, they heard a soft whimper from their child.
"You go ahead and wash up; I'll check on the baby."
