When Lin Xiao emerged from the bathroom, Li Hao gestured for her to come over with a hairdryer in hand. He gently ran his fingers through her long hair, which danced in the air, releasing a faint fragrance.
"Lie down," he said, patting her shoulder as he watched her hair dry.
Lin Xiao found a comfortable position and lay down, facing him as Li Hao held her shoulders and leaned in to kiss her.
"Didn't we just do this last night?" she asked, feeling a mix of annoyance and affection. The truth was, she wanted him to leave partly because he came around every two days like clockwork, more reliable than her own cycle.
Even the donkeys at the production team didn’t work that hard; the grinding mill was nearly sparking from wear.
"You made me angry today; aren't you going to coax me?" he teased. "Honestly, not many men have any shame after getting into bed."
Lin Xiao felt her face flush with embarrassment at his words, realizing this had become their little code. With a resigned sigh, she loosened her nightgown.
Before long, the temperature in the room rose sharply, and soft music began to play in the background.
"How did we solve things before?" Lin Xiao asked sleepily just before drifting off.
"The consequence of suddenly becoming wealthy is binge eating," Li Hao replied shamelessly.
Lin Xiao found his response both amusing and infuriating, and soon she fell asleep.
The discomfort from yesterday seemed to fade away, yet it lingered unspoken between them.
In the following days, Wang Mei began packing up her things to return to Beijing. Located in the south, Yurou County was mild enough that one could survive winter in just a wool coat, but as a northerner, Wang Mei couldn’t stand the damp chill and had taken Tian Tian out less often to play in the yard.
The Cui Ping Management Committee had been established, and Lin Xiao was discussing with Ningyuan Group how to create traditional festivals to attract customers. Ningyuan Group provided a detailed project proposal that Lin Xiao found feasible; she suggested adding some local customs mentioned in Nan Jia's previous article.
Once the plan was approved, it involved ensuring road access and reliable power and water supply. After making arrangements, Lin Xiao insisted that each department must have someone on duty during their shifts.
Earlier, she had called Wang Lei and softened her tone when she remembered his parents' situation. "Director Wang," she said gently, "take care."
"Are you really just going to worship me? No, wait, it's only the twenty-eighth day of the twelfth month." Wang Lei remarked, the noise from his side evident.
"Where are you?" Lin Xiao wondered. "Since we're friends, I should check in on you."
"I'm all alone, just me," Yu Rao replied unexpectedly.
In the past, Wang Lei had mentioned that he could eat enough for his whole family by himself. Lin Xiao thought he was just lamenting his lack of a girlfriend, but it turned out he was genuinely in that situation.
"I'm heading back to Beijing. The security around Cui Ping Scenic Area is a bit troublesome, so please arrange for more people to keep an eye on things."
"No problem! When you all return, I'll give Tian Tian a big red envelope."
"Great! Thank you, Uncle!" Lin Xiao readily agreed.
Lin Xiao used to believe that if she didn't like someone, she shouldn't give them any false hope and should cut off all contact completely.
But with Wang Lei, she found it difficult to do so. Perhaps it was because he had offered her warmth when she felt disheartened, or perhaps it was sympathy for his family's situation that stirred her feelings.
She hoped to bring warmth to his family during these quiet times without mixing in any romantic feelings.
Wang Lei listened to Lin Xiao's response and smiled sincerely. He was Tian Tian's uncle, which also made him Lin Xiao's brother in a way. This seemed to sever his lingering hopes while strengthening their friendship.
"This is nice; I don't feel so alone anymore."
