Wang Lei briefly explained Yang Feng's case.
"Have you asked the prosecutor's office what evidence is missing?" Li Hao inquired, surprised that Yu Rao's situation had deteriorated to the point where the judiciary was no longer functioning properly.
"I did. They believe our law enforcement procedures were illegal and have applied to exclude the illegal evidence."
"Are your law enforcement procedures legal or not?" Li Hao pressed further.
"The situation was urgent at the time, and some procedures were completed afterward," Wang Lei attempted to explain. "However, the professional level of law enforcement personnel in a small county like Yu Rao is indeed limited."
Li Hao scoffed, noting that Yang Feng's backing had infiltrated not only Jian Fa but also had organized means to use legal weapons against them.
"For now, put Yang Feng's case aside and shift your investigation underground," he advised.
Li Hao was concerned that Wang Lei's enthusiasm might provoke trouble and ultimately fail to resolve the issue. "This is a reliable contact within Jian Fa; you can reach out to them when needed." He handed Wang Lei a note.
Some of their contacts had already conducted several investigations, but it was essential for Wang Lei to earn their trust himself. During Li Hao's tenure, there were dedicated individuals who approached him with issues. At that time, Li Hao launched a series of vigorous reforms aimed at improving the conduct of officials and promoting Jian Fa’s operations through joint efforts across multiple departments, striving to stabilize the economy while maintaining strict oversight.
One person’s power is ultimately limited. Therefore, Li Hao was willing to assist Wang Lei; it represented the people's hope for a better life in Yu Rao. Because of Lin Xiao, Li Hao was inclined to trust Wang Lei.
Wang Lei was taken aback by how readily Li Hao offered his support after just a brief introduction. It was no wonder Lin Xiao had chosen him; who could resist a man with such a broad mind?
"Thank you," Wang Lei said, raising his glass in a solemn toast to Li Hao.
Li Hao waved his hand dismissively. "What you're doing is very dangerous; be careful. If you need anything from me, just give me a call."
The three continued discussing matters related to Yu Rao before wrapping up for the evening, as both Lin Xiao and Wang Lei had meetings the next day and parted ways by eight-thirty.
Before leaving, Wang Lei took out a red envelope and handed it to Lin Xiao. "This is my gift as an uncle for Tian Tian's New Year's money." He emphasized the word "uncle" deliberately, hoping Li Hao wouldn’t misunderstand.
Lin Xiao readily accepted the red envelope, and I thanked Tian Tian's uncle on her behalf.
On the way to the hotel, I couldn't help but wonder when Tian Tian had gained an uncle. Lin Xiao seemed to sense my jealousy bubbling up and chuckled softly, suggesting that I should ease up on the vinegar next time.
Li Hao internally protested, insisting he wasn't that kind of person.
"Li Hao, could you help me sell Xing Hong Yi Pin's house?" Lin Xiao mentioned her uncle and then thought of Lin Xiao again. Why was she suddenly talking about selling a house?
I contemplated splitting the proceeds from the sale with Lin Xiao and hoped he wouldn't mind. After all, Lin Xiao had contributed to the down payment for the house. She had always intended to return that money once she bought her own place, hoping that if she was doing well, Lin Xiao would be too.
I wondered how much more money Lin Xiao needed for her house. I decided to call him.
"No," he replied firmly. "No matter how much money you have, there's no reason to support a little uncle. There's no need for Xing Hong Yi Pin's house to sit empty; it should be sold."
Lin Xiao worked at a startup tech company and received bonuses, making a decent income. However, being young meant there wasn't much initial capital, and buying a house was still quite challenging for him.
Once we arrived at the hotel, Li Hao finished his shower and climbed into bed, wrapping his arms around Lin Xiao. "Here’s a reward for you," he said playfully.
Lin Xiao understood their unspoken language and rolled her eyes internally, thinking it was unnecessary; she believed in not accepting rewards without merit.
"No," she countered with a smile. "You did something that truly made me happy."
