As Lin Xiao stepped out of the County Government Building, the bright sunlight momentarily blinded her. For a moment, she felt a sense of unreality; it was still the same County Government Building, yet she was no longer the same person who had once entered it.
Seven years ago, she had been an innocent girl, struggling against life, simply wanting a place to live and to earn her keep. Now, she had achieved that and more. Even without Li Hao by her side, she could fulfill her dreams. With her newfound abilities, she hoped to help others achieve their goals as well.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of her phone.
"Lin Xiao, Wang Lei's surgery was a success. Are you coming over?" Nan Jia's voice was filled with excitement.
"I'll be there right away," Lin Xiao replied before hanging up and hurrying toward her car.
When she arrived, Lin Xiao saw Professor Niu looking pale, surrounded by several exhausted young doctors. An expert from Xiang Tian was listening to Professor Niu speak about something. Lin Xiao stood at the door, hesitant to enter.
A young male doctor looked up and stepped out of the consultation room. "Lin Xiao?"
"Yes, doctor. Hello."
"I'm Dr. Du Xiaoshu, a friend of Nan Jia's. The patient's surgery went very well; he should wake up tomorrow. Don't worry too much." His gentle voice was reassuring.
"Thank you so much, Dr. Du. I really appreciate it." Lin Xiao bowed slightly in gratitude.
Dr. Du took a step back. "No need for that; Wang Lei is a warrior. It's our duty to help."
Hearing about Wang Lei's condition eased Lin Xiao's mind significantly. As she turned to leave, she noticed another young officer coming in for the shift change.
Lin Xiao left her contact information with him before heading back to Gengxu Town for work.
Due to Li Hongxin's arrest, the accounting department was on edge, and the township was filled with anxiety about who might be next. Some people speculated that Lin Xiao had arranged for Zhou Qing to investigate secretly and began to demonize her, believing that it was because of Lin Xiao that Li Hongxin had been taken in.
Many whispered behind her back that Lin Xiao was a woman of great cunning. When the incident in Gulou District resurfaced, they claimed that she must have used underhanded tactics to take down Li Hao and now had sent Li Hongxin to prison as well.
Meng Kai felt a surge of anger upon hearing the gossip and sternly criticized a few of the gossips. To his surprise, he became one of the subjects of discussion, with some calling him Lin Xiao's lackey.
Eventually, the rumors reached Lin Xiao's ears. She felt she should be angry, yet for some reason, she wasn't at all; instead, she felt a sense of helplessness. Lin Xiao decided to call an emergency meeting and notified Lu Shijun to arrange it.
As Lin Xiao sat on the platform, she surveyed the crowd below without saying a word. The noise gradually quieted under her gaze.
"Today, we are here to discuss only one topic: the rectification of our ideological style," she began. "Everyone is aware of the events that have transpired over the past month, and some comrades have participated in the investigation. This time in Gengxu Town, we must resolve to cut inwardly and reform."
Lin Xiao requested each department to draft analytical materials and propose corrective measures, assuring them that she would review each one individually. She did not scold anyone or raise her voice, yet every word she spoke resonated with authority, awakening those present.
After the meeting concluded, the large conference room was filled only with the sound of chairs being dragged.
That evening, as Lin Xiao returned home, exhausted, she noticed a light in the yard from a distance. She parked her car cautiously and pulled out her pepper spray from her bag, standing at the entrance without stepping inside.
Hearing the sound of a car outside, Li Hao hurried out to investigate. As Lin Xiao heard footsteps approaching from afar, she concealed herself beside the door. When she saw Li Hao peek out, she lunged forward.
