Before leaving, Li Hao visited Wang Lei at the county hospital. Looking through the glass window at the still-unconscious Wang Lei, he thought to himself that all their efforts, whether his or Wang Lei's, were worth it.
As he exited the hospital, he ran into Nan Jia and Du Xiaoshu.
"Dr. Du, thank you for everything this time," Li Hao expressed his gratitude before turning to Nan Jia. "When are you returning to Beijing? I heard Yan Ge has been reassigned."
Nan Jia smiled silently at Li Hao, fully aware of his intentions.
Li Hao felt a bit helpless; he didn't understand what was going on between Fang Shuoyan and Nan Jia, why two people in love would torment each other. Du Xiaoshu, sensing the tension, politely excused himself and left.
"Nan Jia, Yan Ge loves you; he has always loved only you. Treat him well," Li Hao said before walking away. He didn't truly believe there was anything between Nan Jia and Du Xiaoshu; he just wanted to speak up for Fang Shuoyan.
Watching Li Hao's departing figure, Nan Jia's smile froze on her face. "Fang Shuoyan... sigh."
As Du Xiaoshu had mentioned, Wang Lei woke up on the third day and was transferred out a week later. On the day Wang Lei regained consciousness, Jin Lai called Lin Xiao, but to his surprise, Lin Xiao did not come.
Jin Lai thought that given Lin Xiao's concern for Wang Lei, he would rush over immediately. However, days passed without any sign of Lin Xiao.
When Lin Xiao finally answered the phone, he was accompanying Nan Jia on a tour of a scenic area with the manager from Ningyuan Group. Upon hearing Jin Lai say that Wang Lei had woken up and passed the critical period, Lin Xiao felt relieved.
The An Bureau had arranged for three volunteers to take shifts caring for Wang Lei and had also hired a nurse. Lin Xiao believed they could take good care of Wang Lei; showing up himself would seem overly deliberate.
"Nan Jia, Wang Lei is awake. You should go interview him before you leave," Lin Xiao suggested.
Nan Jia readily agreed; she had previously written about Fang Shuoyan's fallen comrade, which had stirred nationwide attention.
A week later, when Lin Xiao and Nan Jia brought a fruit basket to visit Wang Lei, they found him still lying in bed, unable to move much. Lin Xiao introduced Nan Jia to Wang Lei and explained their purpose for visiting.
"Nan Jia, could you step outside for a moment? I need to talk with Lin Xiao," Wang Lei politely requested.
"Lin Xiao, I appreciate you bringing in the expert and helping with the publicity, but I’m afraid I have to decline your good intentions. I don’t need it," Wang Lei thought, feeling a surge of resentment.
After waking up, he heard from Jin Lai that Lin Xiao Zhi had come right after he left, and it was also Lin Xiao who had invited the expert. He didn’t know why he was waiting for Lin Xiao to visit him; it had been a week since he woke up, and she finally came, but only because she had a task to fulfill.
"I'm sorry, Lin Xiao didn’t think Wang Lei would be upset. It was my decision without consulting you. I’ll go explain things to Nan Jia," she said. "You should focus on your recovery; I’ll take my leave now."
Lin Xiao thought to herself that anyone who suffered such severe injuries couldn’t possibly be in a good mood.
Wang Lei felt even more irritated. Didn’t they say they were friends? Why was she treating him like this?
Yu Jie was the first to come see him, genuinely concerned about his well-being.
For Wang Lei, Lin Xiao truly regarded him as a friend, but given their past relationship, she would deliberately keep some distance.
Once outside, Lin Xiao expressed her apologies to Nan Jia.
Nan Jia smiled and replied, "It’s alright. What matters is that he’s recovering. Once things settle down here, I’ll head back to Beijing."
