At the beginning of the month, just after the Spring Festival, Wang Lei was assigned to lead a team organized by the provincial office for a style rectification initiative. Before joining the team, he made sure to call Zhao Fei to inform her of his whereabouts and expressed his apologies for not being able to see her.
Zhao Fei's attitude was somewhat cold, and Wang Lei assumed it was because she was unhappy. After exchanging a few more words of apology, he hung up.
A month later, during his vacation, Wang Lei bought a ticket to Beijing and sent Zhao Fei a text message. After some thought, she decided to meet him; it had been a long time since they last saw each other, and she missed him.
They agreed to meet at a five-star hotel near their school. When Zhao Fei saw Wang Lei again, she realized that she still craved his presence and appreciated the unique scent that lingered on him. For three days, aside from Zhao Fei going to school, they hardly left the hotel bed.
On the fourth day, as Wang Lei held Zhao Fei in his arms, his reluctance to part was even stronger. Zhao Fei, too sleepy to keep her eyes open, felt a gentle kiss on her forehead and drifted back into slumber. When she finally woke up, it was already noon, and Wang Lei had dressed himself in her sleepwear.
Wang Lei had never said he loved her; sometimes she felt a bit concerned about it. She wanted him to say it but was also afraid of what his words might mean.
During the summer vacation, Zhao Fei's mother returned from abroad and introduced her to the son of a family friend—a young man named Cheng Xiao. Dressed in a spaghetti strap dress with large black sunglasses and her dyed red hair cascading over her bare shoulders, Zhao Fei caught Cheng Xiao's eye as she entered the room. He felt an instant attraction and continually tried to impress her throughout the gathering.
Zhao Fei attended with a mindset of stirring things up; when asked about filming, she spoke about the kissing scenes with an educational tone, joking that sometimes what starts as acting can become something real.
Cheng Xiao's parents were quite traditional. Although they didn't show it outwardly, they were secretly concerned. However, knowing that Zhao Fei was Xu Jianyun's daughter made them unable to resist engaging in the lively atmosphere.
After managing the conversation well enough, Zhao Fei found an excuse to leave. Cheng Xiao insisted on escorting her back to school. As they reached the school gate and Zhao Fei got out of the car, she unexpectedly spotted Wang Lei.
Her heart raced at the sight of him, and she instinctively moved toward him. Cheng Xiao opened the door for her but hadn’t yet noticed her reaction; he enthusiastically suggested they meet up again soon.
A gust of wind carried Cheng Xiao's words into Wang Lei's ears.
Wang Lei looked at the couple across from him, standing beside a Rolls Royce. The man was tall and exuded an air of wealth, while the girl, with her fiery red hair and black-framed sunglasses, had a face full of joy that concealed her eyes.
In truth, Zhao Fei's joy stemmed from seeing Wang Lei.
For the first time, Wang Lei recognized the gap between himself and Zhao Fei—a height he could never reach no matter how hard he tried in this lifetime.
Suddenly, he felt a pang of heartache and a sense of helplessness wash over him. He wanted to step forward and assert his claim, yet he also thought that since Zhao Fei was willing to date that man, it must be her choice; who could force such a spirited girl?
Wang Lei turned and walked away, feeling as lost as he had once felt hopeful.
Zhao Fei hadn’t expected Wang Lei to turn and leave. She pushed Cheng Xiao aside and hurried after him, her heart racing with urgency.
Behind him, Wang Lei heard footsteps approaching rapidly, along with Zhao Fei’s indignant shouts: "Wang Lei, you bastard! Why are you hiding?"
Wang Lei stopped in his tracks, turning to face the flustered Zhao Fei. All his dissatisfaction evaporated in an instant.
She still wanted him.
"Why did you end things so early?" Zhao Fei exclaimed as she threw herself into Wang Lei's arms.
Wang Lei had just received a national award and had come to Beijing to accept it. After finishing an earlier interview that had been scheduled ahead of time, he rushed over immediately.
"Have you eaten?" Zhao Fei asked, assuming that Wang Lei hadn’t had a meal yet.
