In the end, things did not go as planned. We had to resort to a temporary measure and adjust our original plan. After all, reality is always full of uncertainties, and no one can predict the challenges that lie ahead. We could only take it one step at a time, discovering problems and correcting them as we went along. Thus, this long and arduous search operation lasted for about six or seven hours! It began in the brilliant glow of the setting sun at four o'clock that afternoon and continued until eleven o'clock at night when the world was quiet and still. Unfortunately, despite investing such tremendous effort and time, we had not found even a trace of valuable clues.
At that moment, every member of the rescue team was exhausted and worn out. Their bodies felt as if they were crushed under a heavy burden, their legs weighed down like lead; their eyes were bloodshot, and their spirits dimmed. Moreover, with the night deepening and visibility severely hindered by darkness, continuing the search posed numerous potential dangers. After careful consideration, out of concern for everyone's safety, we reluctantly decided to temporarily halt this seemingly endless rescue operation.
We quickly contacted the anxious family members to communicate in detail about the current difficulties we faced and our next steps. After discussing together, everyone agreed that we should reassess the entire rescue plan, return to square one, and carefully review the surveillance footage that might contain crucial information. At the same time, we made a pact to start a new round of intense search operations as soon as dawn broke, leaving no stone unturned in our pursuit of hope.
Before dawn had fully arrived, as the morning light gently painted the earth with a faint golden hue, we eagerly gathered at the meeting point. Everyone wore serious expressions and focused minds, united by a steadfast belief in finding the missing elderly person.
Despite being physically drained after last night's efforts, no one showed any signs of slackening. We sat around the computer screen, meticulously reviewing the previously collected surveillance footage again and again. Finally, in a segment of extremely blurry video, we caught a glimpse of what appeared to be an elderly figure. This discovery invigorated everyone; we immediately began analyzing this segment in depth.
After repeated comparisons and discussions, we ultimately determined the last known direction of the elderly person's movement. This time, everyone was resolute in their determination to find her. Thus, we set off along this lead to continue our search. Along the way, we left no potential corner unchecked and actively sought information from nearby construction workers and residents.
Our efforts bore fruit when we inquired at a recently excavated construction site; a security guard provided us with a crucial clue. He recalled seeing an elderly woman hurriedly passing by while munching on bread the previous night. He found it somewhat strange and approached her for questions, but she seemed preoccupied and ignored him.
Upon hearing this news, we quickly pressed for details about her clothing color and other characteristics. Fortunately, the guard remembered clearly; his description matched perfectly with that of the elderly person we were searching for. At last, everyone felt a bit more relieved because it was clear that we were getting closer to our target.
With this vital information in hand, we wasted no time in deciding to split into multiple teams and head towards the direction indicated by the guard at full speed. Each team was filled with hope, praying they would soon find the missing elderly woman.
After walking for about thirty minutes without finding a path ahead—only dense weeds towering over us—we noticed that just beyond them lay a river channel. A chill ran through us as we quickly cleared away obstacles to advance further into the thicket. After traversing about ten meters through thick grass, we stumbled upon an unfinished piece of bread on the ground, which shocked everyone present even more. Just then, we noticed signs nearby that suggested something had been pressed down through the grass; following these signs led us onward until we reached a bamboo grove. Upon closer inspection, it seemed there was something dark beneath one part of the grove. We hurried over to investigate and found exactly who we were looking for—the elderly woman sitting beneath the bamboo trees. She looked at us with surprise as we rushed to explain that her daughter had sent us to find her. However, she did not respond but continued to gaze at us silently.
After patiently questioning her and checking her condition, we discovered that she was physically fine but appeared somewhat weak due to prolonged lack of food and water. We promptly contacted local authorities nearby; they arrived quickly as we worked together to help carry her down from the hillside and into their vehicle.
On our way back, everyone finally released their mental burdens; laughter filled our conversations as we shared insights and experiences from this rescue operation. After lunch, I received a call from her family informing me that she was currently receiving treatment at a hospital but was not seriously harmed—just needed some rest for a few days to recover. I conveyed everyone’s concern for her well-being back to her family with hopes for her long life.
Days later, she was discharged from the hospital safely; her family returned to their work in another city but sent us a banner of gratitude along with a thank-you letter expressing their appreciation for our help in this unfamiliar city. I believe that regardless of who it is—whenever someone faces difficulties needing assistance—we will always do our utmost to help them.
