In this year, everything was developing at an unprecedented pace, especially in the field of technology, which made remarkable strides that caught everyone's attention. Against this backdrop, various advanced equipment emerged like mushrooms after rain, continuously upgraded. Among them were some groundbreaking masterpieces, such as thermal imaging devices capable of clearly displaying target heat signatures in dark environments or complex terrains. There was also the far-infrared technology that could detect objects emitting infrared radiation from a great distance, astonishing everyone with its range and accuracy. Notably, the powerful three-dimensional radar life detector seemed to possess a pair of x-ray eyes, capable of penetrating layers of obstacles to accurately capture signs of life, even the faintest breath or heartbeat signals could hardly escape its keen perception. The emergence of these advanced tools undoubtedly brought great convenience and safety assurance to people's lives.
We were no exception; equipped with a Handheld Infrared Thermal Imager, we used it for the first time during a field search mission and successfully located an elderly man.
He was a man over sixty years old. The vicissitudes of life had etched deep wrinkles on his face, and his slightly cloudy eyes often revealed confusion and helplessness. This unfortunate man suffered from moderate Alzheimer's Disease, significantly affecting his memory and cognitive abilities.
On ordinary days, his family took great care of him, meticulously attending to his daily needs. To prevent him from getting lost or encountering accidents, they had provided him with a mobile phone and created an information card containing detailed personal information and contact methods for him to carry. However, on that day, for reasons unknown, these two crucial items were forgotten at home when he went out.
Upon realizing the elderly man's disappearance, his anxious family immediately chose to call the police for help. The police took the report seriously and acted swiftly. They not only dispatched a large number of officers to conduct ground searches but also deployed advanced drone equipment in hopes of spotting the elderly man from above. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. The area where he wandered was densely forested and vast, posing significant challenges for the search efforts. Despite the police's best efforts, they could not find any trace of him.
We quickly recruited several strong and experienced team members and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, we immediately contacted the anxious family to ask them to coordinate with local police to dispatch professional Search and Rescue Dogs to assist in the search. Before long, trained Search and Rescue Dogs arrived at the site. However, surprisingly, these dogs did not seem very sensitive to scents; they wandered through the forest but could not determine a clear direction, as if trapped in a maze, struggling to find their way out.
In fact, we had encountered similar situations many times before. Based on past experiences, it was highly likely that the elderly man had been in this location before; perhaps relentless rain had washed away any lingering scent or other people and animals passing by had disrupted the clues, causing the scent to become too faint or completely vanish.
Before we knew it, time had quietly slipped away to around four in the afternoon. As darkness began to descend, our time grew increasingly tight. With no other options left, we made a decisive decision to abandon reliance on Search and Rescue Dogs and instead adopt the most traditional yet reliable method of manual searching. Drawing on years of accumulated experience, we quickly divided our personnel into small groups and systematically began searching deeper into the mountains.
This mountain had its unique terrain; numerous hills dotted its landscape but none were particularly high. The trees grew thickly on the mountain, their branches intertwining to form a dense green sea. Relying solely on drones from above made it difficult to discern the true situation on the ground; even with advanced thermal imaging equipment attached to drones, most images were obscured by dense foliage, making it impossible to capture any trace related to the elderly man.
After more than two arduous hours of searching, team members gradually returned to our rendezvous point. By this time, darkness had begun to settle in; the sunset painted the sky orange-red but would soon be swallowed by night.
The deeper we ventured into the forest, the more challenging the terrain became. Dense underbrush thrived alongside many thorny plants that acted as natural barriers against our progress. A moment's carelessness could lead to painful encounters with sharp thorns.
When everyone finally reached the rendezvous point, they reported their search findings back to command. At that moment, anxious family members surged forward like a tide, eagerly asking what steps should be taken next. Facing their hopeful gazes, our team leader fell into deep thought. After a moment's pause, he raised his head and slowly said: "Due to poor visibility at night, continuing our search manually will pose significant difficulties. Fortunately, we have just received a piece of equipment that might help us solve our current predicament."
Upon hearing this from our leader, everyone exchanged glances; for a moment no one spoke up. In truth, everyone understood very well that this equipment had only recently arrived in our team and had not yet been tested in real combat situations. There was no certainty whether it would truly be effective or help us complete our mission. However, if we were to continue searching in such darkness within this complex environment without relying on this equipment, there seemed no other way forward. Thus, after a moment of silence, everyone silently reached a consensus to take a risk and give it a try.
The leader commanded: "Quickly bring me the Handheld Infrared Thermal Imager!" Without hesitation I turned and sprinted toward the Equipment Vehicle parked nearby. In just a few steps I reached the vehicle door; opening it revealed neatly arranged Handheld Infrared Thermal Imaging Devices inside.
I grabbed one eagerly; my heart leaped with joy because these devices had just been charged after training two days prior and were ready for immediate use. This device was incredibly powerful—especially in dark environments filled with smoke or debris—it could significantly enhance our search capabilities and was an indispensable ally during missions.
