I trembled all over, my heart aching fiercely. If it weren't for the fact that I and Lu Ningyuan were trying to buy a house, to have a home in the big city, I would never have entrusted Xiao Bao to my in-laws. I sent them monthly support for Xiao Bao, including formula and clothes, all of which I had prepared in advance and shipped as he grew. I worried about the child being mistreated in front of my in-laws, always carefully observing him during video calls. But my mother-in-law constantly said the child was asleep, afraid of disturbing his rest. Each time I heard that Xiao Bao was sleeping, I couldn't bear to have her wake him up. It turned out that the child had been fed alcohol to sleep; overwhelmed by sorrow, I could no longer hold back and burst into tears.
"Xia Xia, please don't cry... There might be some misunderstanding; my parents are not like that," Lu Ningyuan explained on behalf of his parents, though he felt a bit uncertain recalling what they had said in the hospital.
"Let's go to your house and ask them directly. You don't need to rush to explain for them; since Uncle Zhang said so, we should clarify things," I said bitterly.
When we reached my in-laws' yard, I saw a pile of worn-out children's clothes on the ground. At a glance, I recognized them as the clothes Xiao Bao had worn when they took him away; none of the clothes I had sent back were there.
"Mom, will that doctor really give us six hundred thousand?" came the voice of my brother-in-law from the yard.
Hearing this, I grabbed Lu Ningyuan, who was about to enter, signaling him to stay quiet.
"Yeah, luckily I'm smart enough to tell that fool that the child died from taking the wrong medicine. Not long ago, his clinic had an incident where someone died from a prescription error and he had to pay two hundred thousand. If it weren't for fearing his reputation would be ruined, he wouldn't offer so much this time. And your dad just gave Xiao Bao a little alcohol; she just needed to sleep. Who knew that mixing alcohol with fever medicine would make her unconscious? Even hitting her wouldn't wake her up," Mother Lu said smugly.
"And sister-in-law is just a dead girl; she's dead now, so just bury her casually. Why spend so much on cremation? Save it for me to marry a wife!" Brother-in-law continued.
"Exactly! A dead girl—why buy such expensive formula? And spending hundreds on clothes? Hmph! For her dead girl status, having something to wear is already good enough," Mother Lu's voice continued.
I stared intently into Lu Ningyuan's eyes; this was your mother—this was the truth.
"What did you say? Is what Uncle Zhang said true? My Xiao Bao was harmed by you?" I shot a glance at Lu Ningyuan and asked as I rushed inside.
Lu Ningyuan's face turned pale as he looked incredulously at his mother and brother, his body trembling slightly.
"Mom, how could you do this? Xiao Bao is still so young; she is your granddaughter!" Lu Ningyuan's voice was filled with uncontrollable anger and sorrow.
Seeing this, Mother Lu's expression darkened as she replied, "Ningyuan, don't be foolish; that's six hundred thousand! With this money, your brother can get married right away. That dead girl is dead—what's wrong with turning her into some compensation?"
Listening from the side, an endless wave of anger and disappointment surged within me. I looked at Lu Ningyuan, hoping he would do something for his deceased daughter.
"Ningyuan, we can't let money blind us. Xiao Bao is innocent; she shouldn't have to endure such a fate. We must seek justice for her!" I said firmly.
Lu Ningyuan looked at me and then at his mother and brother, a flicker of hesitation crossing his eyes.
