Huang Ling anxiously dialed the phone number for the Bus Station, her voice trembling slightly. After receiving confirmation that two children had indeed left for Shanghai that morning, her hands fell weakly to her sides, a mix of emotions swirling in her heart. Gathering her strength, Huang Ling called her son Zhuang Tunan, far away in Shanghai, her voice breaking as she said, "Tunan, Lin Dongzhe and Peng Fei have run off to find you. Please go to the bus station and pick them up. You must make sure nothing happens to them!"
Upon hearing about her brother's bold move, Suzhou's eyes widened in shock and disbelief. She could hardly imagine that her mischievous yet generally well-behaved brother would dare to take such a risk. The thought of the dangers he might face sent a wave of fear through her, causing her body to tremble slightly.
Song Ying, Teacher Zhuang, and Zhao Yiming quickly gathered their things and rushed toward the train station. Just before they left, Song Ying tightly grasped Huang Ling's hand, her eyes filled with desperation. "Ling Jie, please take care of Lin Xiaoyu for me," she pleaded. Huang Ling nodded vigorously and replied, "Don't worry, I will." Watching them disappear into the night, Huang Ling silently prayed they would successfully find the two children.
As night fell like a vast black curtain over the small town, Lin Wufeng finished a long day of work and returned home, his body weary. As he pushed open the door, he noticed an unsettling absence of light; the usual sounds of laughter from his family were nowhere to be heard. The silence was oddly eerie.
He paused for a moment, instinctively thinking that his family had simply gone out visiting as they often did. While changing his shoes, he softly called out their names, but all he received in return was an echoing silence. Slowly stepping inside, darkness enveloped him like a tide. He fumbled along the wall until he found the light switch; with a click, the room illuminated before him. The living room appeared somewhat disheveled—tea cups lay scattered on the table as if hinting at a recent flurry of activity.
Lin Wufeng furrowed his brow as an uneasy feeling crept into his chest. He quickly turned and rushed out of the house toward Huang Ling's place. The night air was cool against his face, sending a shiver down his spine. His steps quickened as his heart raced faster.
Meanwhile, in the Lin household, Lin Xiaoyu curled up under her blankets. The sudden departure of her brother had already left her feeling unsettled, and now she was jolted awake by faint noises in the stillness of the night. In the darkness, fear filled her eyes as she looked around frantically but saw nothing. She tried to call out for her family, but it felt as if something was blocking her throat; only a weak whimper escaped her lips. The sound echoed in the empty room, amplifying her terror.
As Lin Wufeng entered Huang Ling's home without even having time to speak, he heard Lin Xiaoyu's cries coming from their house. His heart lurched painfully; without waiting to explain anything to Huang Ling, he turned and ran back inside. He dashed into Xiaoyu's room and reached her bedside in just a few strides, pulling her tightly into his arms. Feeling her father's warm and strong embrace calmed Lin Xiaoyu somewhat; she clutched at his shirt and cried out, "Daddy, I'm scared! Brother is missing!"
Lin Wufeng gently stroked her head and comforted her softly, "Don't be afraid; Daddy is here. You don't have to worry about anything." His voice was deep and steady, carrying a magical quality that gradually soothed Lin Xiaoyu.
As her sobs began to subside and her trembling body relaxed against him, Huang Ling hurried over to them. Her face still bore traces of anxiety and exhaustion; she breathed heavily as she looked at Lin Wufeng and said, "Lin Wufeng, please don't panic. Here's what happened: Lin Dongzhe and Peng Fei secretly went to Shanghai to find Zhuang Tunan. Song Ying and the others are already on their way there to pick them up. I just spoke with them on the phone; the kids are safe for now and will be coming back soon together with them. So you don't need to worry too much."
Listening to Huang Ling's explanation, Lin Wufeng furrowed his brow deeply with concern and helplessness etched across his face. He sighed softly and said, "These two kids really know how to keep us on our toes."
