As graduation approached in their fourth year of university, the campus was filled with a mix of anticipation for new beginnings and the sorrow of impending farewells. Xiao Ting and Lin Dongzhe found themselves caught in the harsh grip of reality, standing at a crossroads with heavy hearts.
One day, while Xiao Ting and Lin Dongzhe were quietly discussing their futures in a corner of the campus, her father unexpectedly arrived in Shanghai. Her father’s companion echoed his sentiments, earnestly adding, "Dear daughter, we are doing this for your own good. Teaching at Soochow University offers stability and respect; your future will be secure. You cannot throw away your prospects for fleeting romance."
Xiao Ting lowered her head, tears welling in her eyes. She wanted to argue but was silenced by the resolute concern on her father's face.
After her father left, Lin Dongzhe hurried over, taking Xiao Ting's hand with a mix of sympathy and helplessness. "Don't be too hard on yourself," he said gently. "What your parents say does make sense. I don’t want to hold you back from a bright future." Xiao Ting sobbed softly as she lifted her tear-streaked face to him. "Lin Dongzhe, I know they mean well, but I really don’t want to part ways with you. Why don’t we get married? We can face whatever comes together; no matter where we go, we won't let go of each other's hands."
Lin Dongzhe was momentarily taken aback but then his eyes filled with determination and emotion as he tightly grasped Xiao Ting's hand. "Yes, as long as I can be with you, I'm not afraid of anything."
However, challenges soon arose; marrying as undergraduates was against school regulations. But Lin Dongzhe was resolute. To ensure they could marry smoothly, he tirelessly visited the teachers' offices at school, presenting their relationship history with sincerity and promising that marriage would not affect their studies or future careers. He even submitted academic plans and career aspirations to prove they were capable of handling life's responsibilities. After much effort and consideration from the teachers, they were eventually granted permission to proceed with their marriage.
After tying the knot, they cautiously kept their marriage hidden from both sets of parents and friends while heading off to their respective jobs. Xiao Ting went to Soochow University; although her initial teaching position was busy and stressful, she often wrote letters and made calls filled with sweetness and anticipation for their future together. Meanwhile, Lin Dongzhe worked hard at Procter & Gamble in Guangzhou, cherishing every mundane moment spent talking to Xiao Ting during breaks. Their hearts remained closely intertwined as they navigated their hidden lives together, waiting for the right moment to reveal their marriage and embrace a new life openly.
Lin Xiao Yu and Lu Zean sat on a somewhat worn bench by the playground, the grass rustling softly in the breeze beside them. Yet neither paid attention to the surroundings; their minds were consumed with confusion and anxiety about the future. The atmosphere felt heavy and oppressive like a thick layer of clouds.
Lin Xiao Yu furrowed her brow tightly, nervously tugging at her clothes as she broke the silence with a trembling voice: "Lu Zean, I received an offer from that company in Beijing. You know how much I've wanted this opportunity; it’s like reaching for my dreams among countless stars. But thinking about being apart from you makes my heart feel empty and anxious." As she spoke, her eyes reddened with longing and reluctance as she gazed at Lu Zean.
Lu Zean sighed heavily, scratching his head in frustration while his brow furrowed deeply in conflict: "I’m just as torn as you are! I just got noticed by that research institute in Beijing because during my time abroad for exchanges I spent all my days in the lab learning cutting-edge techniques and ideas. My grades have been outstanding too; that's how I got this precious opportunity. But working at the institute won’t be easy—I’m worried that if I dive into it completely, I’ll be so busy that I won’t have time for you anymore, and our relationship might fade away."
Days passed like flowing water as graduation drew nearer; each tick of the countdown echoed painfully in their hearts. They remained trapped in a maze where love intertwined with future aspirations—lost and unable to find an exit.
One day, Lu Zean invited Lin Xiao Yu to meet by the campus lake. The sunset cast shimmering reflections on the water's surface, but neither had any desire to appreciate the beauty around them. Taking a deep breath, Lu Zean stepped forward and grasped Lin Xiao Yu's hand with unprecedented determination as if he had made an immense decision: "Lin Xiao Yu, I've made up my mind—missing out on you would be my greatest regret in life. Upon hearing this, tears streamed down Lin Xiao Yu's face like pearls slipping from a broken string as she suddenly threw herself into Lu Zean's arms, holding him tightly while sobbing uncontrollably: "That’s wonderful! Lu Zean! I’ve been waiting for you to say that for so long! I believe that as long as we’re together, no matter how difficult the road ahead is, we will surely find our way!"
From that moment on, they began preparing for their move to Beijing—packing their belongings, searching for rental information, planning commuting routes. Amidst the chaos of graduation season filled with excitement about their future together and deep affection for one another, they stepped into Beijing—a city brimming with opportunities and challenges—each heading towards their new roles while embarking on fresh lives together. In bustling streets or late nights after work shifts ended, they held onto each other's hands tightly as they faced life's storms side by side—taking steady steps toward realizing their dreams.
