"Well, what a surprise! The top student of the year has come to find me! And wants to skip class with me!"
Feng Yixiao, with a cigarette dangling from his lips, leaned casually against the railing of the Art Building, looking at Tang An'an with a teasing glint in his eyes. "I guess this counts as a date?"
The surrounding Art Students immediately erupted into raucous whistles, their voices rising and falling in playful mockery.
Tang An'an's face turned beet red. She stomped her foot and turned to leave.
Feng Yixiao was quick to grab her arm, a sly smile creeping onto his face. "If you want my help, you have to agree to one condition."
"What condition?" A glimmer of hope flashed in Tang An'an's eyes as she asked eagerly.
"Let me kiss you," Feng Yixiao said, leaning closer to her hair and deliberately inhaling deeply. "So fragrant—"
"You! How shameless!" Tang An'an was both embarrassed and furious. She slapped him and, amidst the laughter of the Art Students, dashed down the stairs. She thought to herself that she had misjudged him; she had believed that the Feng Yixiao who bravely spoke up in the cafeteria against the headmaster was someone principled, but it turned out he was just a petty opportunist.
During evening study hours, Zhu Mingxuan switched seats with Lu Ziqi's desk mate. The two chatted animatedly all night long, occasionally glancing over at Tang An'an.
Even after school, Zhu Mingxuan didn’t come over to invite her to walk home together.
As Tang An'an stepped out of the classroom, a motorcycle zoomed past Zhu Mingxuan and Lu Ziqi before coming to a halt right beside her.
Feng Yixiao took off her helmet, shook her long hair, and before Tang An'an could react, she placed the helmet on Tang An'an's head and pulled her onto the back seat. "Let's go! Time for a date!"
Zhu Mingxuan stood there with a pale face, stunned, until Lu Ziqi pulled him away, and the two left without a word.
Feng Yixiao drove Tang An'an out of the school gates. The security guard recognized the car belonging to the principal's family and did not dare to stop them, allowing them to leave freely.
Tang An'an hit her from behind with some force. "Didn't you say you wouldn't help?"
"Let's just put that kiss on hold for now," Feng Yixiao replied nonchalantly, still wearing that carefree smile.
"Is it always like this at school before the college entrance exams?" Tang An'an asked seriously.
She knew that Feng Yixiao had repeated a year and was more aware of things than she was, which was why she had invited him out to find some things at Lu Ziqi's house.
"Pretty much," Feng Yixiao slowed down, his smile fading as his expression turned serious. "Every year as the exams approach, there are always some students who can't handle the pressure and either commit suicide or go insane. It's not unusual, but the methods they come up with seem to get more bizarre each year."
"What do you mean by that?" Tang An'an asked curiously, her eyes filled with confusion.
"Haha, no wonder you'd ask. You top students wouldn't understand the tricks we underachievers resort to," Feng Yixiao said, his smile disappearing as he looked at her earnestly. "There's a legend at Beiyue High School. It’s said that if you collect a person's Red Nail and burn it in a hidden place, you can complete a terrifying curse that ensures the owner of the nail meets a terrible fate."
Such a malicious curse existed! But considering they were all classmates, how deep must the hatred be for someone to resolve to carry out such a cruel act?
"Exactly the opposite of what you imagined," Feng Yixiao seemed to read her thoughts and continued, "Although this curse sounds like a fairy tale, every year at Beiyue High School, several top students die, and without exception, all have had their nails ripped off. Everyone is on edge, and in such circumstances, many choose to strike first for self-preservation. Some seek revenge after losing good friends, while others use the Red Nail to frame others. In short, before the college entrance examination, Beiyue High School is an invisible battlefield."
"But... this..." Tang An'an gasped in shock, unable to find her words as she was deeply shaken.
"Scared, huh? If you're afraid, just stick with me every day," Feng Yixiao said with a playful grin. "I'll protect you 24/7."
"You!" Tang An'an's face turned red as she jumped out of the car and hurried away.
Feng Yixiao watched her retreating figure with amusement, lighting a cigarette, his eyes revealing an elusive meaning.
